The Northman is unique for being unapologetic in its foreignness. Its values aren't modern or purely noble- we can relate to them only on the most primal levels. Its hero isn't good- he's drenched in innocent blood the moment we meet him as an adult. Its villain, likewise, isn't purely black, and shows moments we can empathize with. Its cosmology is bleak, its narrative is bleak, its ending is bleak- and it never tries to sugar-coat anything. It is truly a Norse epic, and it's a classic for that.

They actually filmed this movie in my country in Ireland. I absolutely loved this movie and the performances by both Alexander Skarsgaard and Anya Taylor-Joy were exceptional. I loved how it was historically authentic yet also at the same time steeped itself unapologetically in the mystical world of Norse Mythology. I loved the surrealism- Sensational movie.

Stunning edit. (spoilers?) Loved this adaptation of Hamlet, especially because it wasn't set in some castle. The landscapes and the atmosphere were the perfect visualization of the fierceness and emotional "brutality" of the characters. Plus, Ophelia's counterpart had more agency, and a better storyline. ✌️😋

This is a really under-rated movie in my opinion, initially I thought it was really weird but by the end I realised it was just meant to be a folk tale, not a movie and ended up finding its subversion of modern story-telling to be really cool.

i watched the film year ago, liked it but was not a big fan, another one with same vibes "the green knight" was much more satisfying for me, then i saw thumbnail, cliked on it just to check a few scenes, i checked video length, saw 05:00, thought it will be around 30 secs, than i finished it, read this first poetic, open-hearted, well articled ("bleak" ha, what a word, just learnt now after translating and cant wait to use it to someone who will get what i mean without any explanation) comment and now can't wait to see it a second time. this is some art zurik, brava. movie looks damn solid.
