I don’t understand how some Protestants characterize Catholics as having this anxiety-inducing view of salvation when I think it’s the opposite! Can you imagine committing a sin after having “been saved” and then having to believe that, since you did so, you must never have been saved in the first place?? Thank you Lord Jesus for your Church. We all fall, every single day. Sometimes we sin greatly but His mercy is always there for us!

Catholics have to deal with the possibility they'll go to hell forever because they masturbated, or used birth control because they already have too many kids. And you have no idea if your act met the requirement to be "mortal" so you have to race back and forth between confession just to be sure. I see it all the time on catholic discussion boards and in person. If you are not scrupulous as catholic, you're not taking the formulaic route to salvation as presented by the catholic church seriously enough.

Who told you that? Have you read 1 Jn 2:1-6? It addresses this entire issue about being sure of your salvation because of your works versus being/not being saved period. Protestants that feel the way you describe do not know about grace - that was me once. I saw grace as an excuse for sin and worried that every bad action or thought threw me out out salvation.

@@deerlow1851 No we don't. I'm sure you can find some text somewhere defending papal authority and pull it out of context to argue Catholics put the pope above Christ, but that's decidedly not what Catholicism teaches or believes. The pope's authority is one of interpretation and application, not creation, of Christian teachings. He cannot contradict Scripture, and if he does or tries to, the Church will come back to the Truth. I mean, we have of course had terrible popes in the past, but as Christ promised the gates of Hell will not overcome the Church. And they haven't, even if the enemy has scored some major victories at different times over the past 2000 years (the Schism, the Reformation, the sex abuse). Think of his authority like the US Supreme Court's authority alongside the Constitution. Interpretation and application, yes, but changing the Constitution or blatantly contradicting the Constitution, absolutely not.

Trent’s arguments are so exegetically flimsily: Faith alone in Christ alone acquits sinners of eternal condemnation and not without water baptism. (If P, then Q) The thief on the cross was granted paradise apart from water baptism. (Not Q) Therefore, one can be saved apart from water baptism. (Not P) If water baptism is identical to the gospel, then one must be water baptized to get saved. (If P, then Q) Christ send Paul not to baptize but to preach the gospel (1 Cor 1:17; Not Q) Therefore, baptism is not the gospel. (Not P)

I have a Catholic family member who converted to a Bible-believing Evangelical Protestant. He now tells us at every opportunity that Catholics are going to hell because all we need to do is believe in Jesus to be saved. I tell him that Catholics actually do believe in Jesus, so I guess all Catholics are saved. He says no, because of all the other stuff Catholics do. So I ask him, if someone believes in Jesus, but prays multiple times a day using a Rosary to keep track of the prayers, eats the bread and drinks the wine as Jesus commanded us to do, honors Jesus's mother Mary as he commanded us to do, and asks the Saints to pray for us, do all those those things cancel out the belief we have in Jesus for our salvation? He answers yes, because all we need to do for salvation is believe in Jesus. So Protestant logic is this; if you do anything more than just believe in Jesus, you won't be saved. I wonder where it says that in the Bible?

I commented this earlier, but isn't it strange that they believe that all sins are automatically forgiven and you go to Heaven, so long as you believe in Jesus, EXCEPT for the apparent sins that Catholics commit? By their very logic, even if we were committing idolatry and such, our belief in Jesus should automatically atone for it (unless their one of those who think that if people still sin at all, they aren't really saved, which I imagine causes sooo much scrupulosity). So do we have to truly believe that we are saved just by believing in Jesus, in order to be saved by just believing in Jesus..? That's just absurd.

That's false as a wood coin. Christ says pretty clear in John 14 verses 15,21,23-24: “If you love me, you will KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. [...] He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” [...] Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. HE WHO DOES NOT LOVE ME DOES NOT KEEP MY WORDS; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me." So Christ requires a lot more than believe in Him. He demands to keep his commandments. Your protestant friend is awfully wrong because he's falsifying and cheaping Christ's gospel

As a Protestant, I think I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior 6 or 7 times just in case the first ones didn’t take. It was the sacramental structure of Catholicism that gave me true confidence. As I became more aware of the goal of perfect contrition/better understanding of Christ’s love, I increasingly understood that he wasn’t trying to catch me on a technicality. For me, the structure gave me some logical points and concrete action instead of some amorphous understanding. This led me to understand the truth of salvation doesn’t subsist in these little “rules” or definitions, but that they pointed to a bigger picture, and guided me in word and action, to truly live and experience a reality that is beyond words.

What I tried to convey is that the Sacraments led me to greater faith, going beyond their merely physical aspects. The Sacramental signs (like Eucharist and Confession) are not merely physical but are connected to a greater spiritual reality. This understanding gave me confidence in the heart of Jesus- I didn’t find solace in the merely physical aspects, but in the greater reality they are linked to, which is Jesus’ saving love.

Aftet decades I began reading commentaries of the church fathers. Whwnever I did so I realised that the ancient church was definitely not Protestant. I am now a Catholic and I feel sincerely sorry for the majority of Protestants. They spend their whole life trying to understand truths which have long ago been clarified. Sorry you had such a bad experience with Protestants. The reality is that the Reformers sought to return to the faith of those Church Fathers. Read, for instance, the 95 theses to see why they were opposed to the Catholic church, and then look to see if the Catholics have fixed any of those issues. (The answer is no. Rome is bound by their claims of perfection and so cannot reform even obviously false claims. This is why for example Catholic apologists are still required to defend indulgences.)

@@Leraje241 This was a real problem to me until I discovered that the deepest and most effective devotion is in the heart. Once the heart is correctly disposed towards God, He comes in to fellowship with you. No experience surpasses it. However, it is not attained by seeking an experience. Do your part - regular and disciplined - and in time you will realise He is there - just like the Emmaus men only recognised his presence during the meal. I still visit Pentecostal churches because I enjoy the enthusiasm and zeal but I find it difficult to focus because of the loud sounds and distractions. I love them but also feel sorry for them because their spiritual growth is usually arrested. Because their services are emotionally charged they usually come away satisfied and so imagine the have it all. They often can only sustain their enthusiasm by recreating the atmosphere that gives them 'the lift'. Howerver, the danger is 'How do you sustain it when persecution comes and you may no longer worship in that manner?' In the Catholic faith it doesn't matter what happens, because what you experience does not require an external stimulus. Thats my view.

@@CK-ub7jf Yea I realized pretty quick that 'picking' a church based on the experience was not gonna be sustainable or lead to the full truth. Long story short I'm pretty sure its either Catholic Church or nothing; I've been ramping up Catholic 'practice' for a few months now in an attempt to take up the offer in Matthew 7:7-8. Tbh its kinda hard and exhausting doing it all without actually 'believing'; I get we're meant to give 'everything' and the promise of Christianity is worth more than anything anyone could give, but... practically speaking its like there's no end in sight. It would seem that if I knowingly reject the sacraments and don't enter full communion with the Church, I'm damned - but I also can't recite the creed without lying (I insert 'wish to' before 'believe' when doing the Rosary personally, and stay quiet communally) or receive sacraments as an unbeliever. I was baptized as a baby by my atheist parents to please my grandparents so at least I have that going for me. I go to mass most days of the week, go to an evening Rosary session almost every night, learning prayers, reading books (Bible and Catechism via podcast too), tithe, etc... technically I could do more and more and more still of all these things, but its like the last piece is the grace of faith and not anything I have control over, which maybe will come when I feel like giving up but decide not to... just stuck in circles. Just ranting now so I'll stop there, but if you had a specific conversion moment or key thing you did I'd be grateful to hear.

I'm set to be confirmed a Catholic this Pentecost Sunday. I have been a Protestant Christian since I was 11 years old. This all seems semantical to me, which one of the reasons I had to ask myself, "What am I protesting, anyway?". Not much. Jesus said, "If you love me, keep My commandments." The Protestants' mistake is to think that "belief" or "faith" is just some sort of mental assent. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as a tangible thing ("the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen"). The rest of the chapter goes on to describe how the Old Testament saints acted on their faith. Abraham is often called the father of faith...he was *faithful*. We know that faith is a gift from God in the first place (grace). Protestant N.T. Wright discusses the Greek for "faith" as "faithful" or "faithfulness". The love and grace of God through Christ in baptism creates faithfulness in our hearts, no?

I’m am 37 years old and currently going through the process of converting to the Catholic Church. I’ve explained in several comment sections, I am from the Bible Belt and have been a Methodist and southern baptist my entire life. We basically accepted both. I did not plan on this conversion and I was called during a hard trial in my life. I’ve always been anti-catholic and feel my conversion was an act of the holy spirit. I do not take this time in my life lightly and I am still shocked this has happened. I wanted to say one of the things I noticed over the last few months of this happening is I finally realized what grace is, and for the first time I’m brought to tears and feel the real love of God in this way: purgatory. Until I realized the Bible does point to purgatory, I felt god was simply a tyrannical entity that would damn me unconditionally. I’m so thankful for this concept. That’s not to say I want an out, I do not want purgatory. However, the concept shows me what the Bible talks about, God is merciful and gracious. He tries to reach us in any way possible, and isn’t the tyrannical being Protestants have created him to be. I say this because to me it’s weird how any Protestant could think the false Protestant God is less stressful and brings less anxiety. To me it’s complete nonsense. The Protestant God is impossible and will damn most people without the ability to do much about it. It’s a terrifying religion, just listen to John MacArther. My mother is psychotic and abused me as a child. I also come to tears when I realize God gave me a mother and I can pray to her. I’ve never had a mother and it’s been really hard transitioning in life without one. This is another aspect that has beought me closer to Christ. It’s shown me I have everything I need in Christ, which I never fully understood until now. I feel terrible for being nasty to Catholics over my 37 years and because I was so far off, God did this and I’m sure of that. I’ll always feel awful for how I used to speak about them and I’m so thankful they’ve welcomed me into the fold. I’ve gone from a lost, drug abusing Protestant without a feeling of spirituality to a therapist with a graduate degree turned catholic with so many answers. I worked hard for God to meet me halfway and I finally feel I’m there.

Terrifying? Jesus - “Narrow is the gate and hard is the way that leads to eternal life and few find it.” Jesus - “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me.” Jesus - “And on that day they will come to me and say ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name? Didn’t we cast out demons in your name? Didn’t we do mighty works in your name? And I will say to them I never knew you be gone workers of iniquity.” Jesus talks a lot more about hell than heaven! What’s missing in most religions including Catholicism is a profound fear (awe and reverence) for God. If you you find all this terrifying maybe that’s a good thing, I’m guessing that’s why Jesus warns us about it.

Everyone is saved through Grace Alone in baptism. It's a free gift so no one can boast. However, you can receive a free gift, but lose it by your own actions. Nowhere in the Bible it says you cannot lose this "free gift so no one can boast". To return to that free gift of Grace after sinning is to turn towards God. It means repenting, and remaining in communion with Christ by obeying what we have been asked to do. Believing Jesus means accepting what He taught as true and taking his commands seriously which means acting according to them. Only logical conclusion from "faith alone" -passages and how they can be reconciled with the "faith + works" -passages is that Faith is more than just confessing a belief. Faith includes Belief, Obedience, and Repentance.

I'd definitely agree with this formulation as a Protestant. I think most Catholic and Protestant theologians would agree with it as well, and it seems consistent with magisterial Protestant confessions. Afaik, what separates traditional Protestant and Catholic understanding is whether works done under faith merit grace. Both positions understand that mere intellectual assent devoid of any good works is insufficient (as St. James writes in his letter), they just use different terminology to express it.

I always found the presumption that I was guaranteed Heaven so long as I “believed fully” very lacking, even as a youth before I got more into my faith. Doing the right thing is hard, doing the right thing consistently is hard, even knowing what the right thing even is can be tough! So many people I know think ‘being a good person’ is enough to get by, but it’s really the mantra of those who either 1) don’t want to try or 2) are unconvinced in their beliefs. They’ll opt put of the Church and her “rules” but flock to any congregation run by people spouting whatever they personally believe, even if it contradicts someone in the same group! I like having the basic rules of the Church, and then given the options and suggestions on how to grow the best way for me. Eternity with God in Heaven requires infinite acceptance of submission, so why not spend this time on earth getting used to it and take advantage of the Church Jesus left us. 😊

It's not just the plunge. The fact that venial sins sink you down a little bit while mortal sins sink you down a lot implies that a lot of venial sins could add up to one mortal sin (which is not what Catholics believe), but also has the person climbing back up out of unrighteousness through sacraments and works, which isn't an accurate representation of Catholic teaching either. A single reconciliation puts you all the way back up as justified, and none of your other works are meritorious to make it up there on your own.

A flaw here is the legalism that is required for Catholicism. As a Protestant, the guide is that Jesus, above all else, did the entirety of the work to save us, hence why salvation by faith alone, but not works, is correct doctrine. If it isn't, then we earn salvation, to some extent, inferring that we didn't need Jesus' sacrifice in the first place and that we can earn our way to salvation. However, as it states in James, faith without works is dead, for we are to imitate Christ and the good works He did on Earth. While this might seem to be "earning" salvation, it is not, but it is in fact demonstrating the changes of the Holy Spirit inside of us. There are some out there (think thief on the cross) who merely believed, didn't have time to do good works or follow through on their faith and were saved as a result of their faith in Christ. In short, Protestants do good works as a result of salvation and the Holy Spirit, whereas Catholics do good works as obligation to ensure their salvation.

@@soulosxpiotov7280 This makes no logical or Biblical sense. No where does the Bible teach this. This is Calvinism- a heretical doctrine of a man that has led many to denounce Christianity completely. Here’s why. If you say that God causes us to Trust Him - against our will- then he is automatically NOT a loving God. Love is acting toward the good of another - for the sake of the other and without and selfish desire. This is why we are called to love our enemies as a “test” of our love. Why would we need to do this if he is the one that forces our enemies to trust him or not? Do you believe we should pray to our God for an increase in love/trust? Should we evangelize? Should we hold Church services? Should we have Bible studies? Should we call people to repentance? To be consistent - if our Trust is a “work of God” and then we don’t need to do any of those things, correct??? Protestant here! I was discussing this with my dad, who has a Catholic background, and I found myself using those exact arguments from GotQuestions! I must say - while it makes perfect sense to me, it was quite confusing to my dad. I’ll concede to the complicated view we have of salvation. I’m actually a new believer, and without much familiarity with the “sacramentalism” debate. In my personal experience, out of my own love for Christ, I found it unthinkable *not* to be baptized. It’s not necessarily that I find proofs for baptismal regeneration all too convincing (minus the attestation of church fathers), but it’s strange how my consciousness bore witness to me that failing to get baptized would be a great sin against the Lord. Interesting stuff. Thank you for clearing up the Catholic plan of salvation, which I admit, has been caricatured, by evangelical circles I’m in. I agree with Trent's final conclusion: the salvation discussion between Evangelicals and Catholics shouldn't focus on which system is more complex, but rather, on which one "better corresponds to what God has divinely revealed to us". If I believed the catholic sacramental system to be scriptural, I would absolutely convert, regardless of any perceived complexity. But scripturally, our salvation (justification) is not the result of any of our works (even baptism); our works are the result of our salvation. The difference between Evangelical and Catholic is not in the having of works - but in the source and purpose for them. Even baptism, though very important, is not required for salvation. If baptism *were* required to be saved, why would Paul say, "For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel..."(1 Corinthians 1:17) Also, it' s important not to judge people's hearts simply by applying modus tollens..."no fruit, therefore no salvation". Because God alone sees the heart and there may be the beginnings of heart change not yet visible or there may be a delay in fruit bearing. In that situation we offer either encouragement or warning (1 Thessalonians 5:14). If the concern is over our own sin, disobedience, or lack of fruit, all we must do is confess, repent and trust Jesus to bring us through to where he wants us. No hand wringing about modus tollens salvation-negation. Paul encourages the Thessalonians saying "Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who called you is faithful; HE will surely do it" (1 Thess. 5:23-24) Amen! We *can* have certainty in Christ Jesus.

The whole reason why i returned to the Catholic churchnis because after bouncing from church to church in protestantism, I started to see a pattern: the "fine print works" that is preached from behind the pulpit at the last third of pretty much every sermon they say. For several years, I even became involved in a sort of "gnostic" group of believers, where we simply believed Jesus was our complete body of good works which reconciles us to God. It was a fun run for a while... But then it became a loose form of licentiousness pretending it was avoiding legalism. Ooof.... It still plays with my head. Then I had this longing for my roots in the Catholic church... And i began to be enraptured by its rich and deep history, theology and mysteries. Albeit, i still struggle, but as Rev. Fulton Sheen said: we don't lean on the cross, the cross leans on us.

There are some conceptions of protestant theology on salvation that they could plausibly come by honestly, but for the most part they are extremely dishonest and must twist scripture. Like yeah, Romans 8:1 is true, but what if you are no longer in Christ? They proof text this verse as if it affirms once saved always saved which is just circular. That is a doctrine which really obliterates any sense of consistency in the Bible. There's the parable of the vine and the unforgiving servant, salvation is constantly talked about as a process where someone must continue to remain in Christ not a one-way gate, yet they believe in this nonsense

Salvation is very simple. Faith that leads to repentance(change of mind/heart from sin to God). Example is the thief on the cross(Luke23:39-43). He was not baptized, no works were performed, yet he was promised to see Jesus in Paradise. No works are necessary. If you have repented and are Born again(John 3:3, 2 Corinthians 5:17), you will naturally want to serve God through good works(Romans12:1-2, 2 Corinthians 5:15). Jesus tells us in John 15:1-8 that if we are his we will bear much fruit. Works follow salvation, but are not required for it. Baptism is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-4). Baptism is a picture of our unity with Christ much like a wedding ring is the picture of our unity when we are married(read the rest of Romans 6). We are after all, the bride of Christ.

As a member of the reformed church, I will not speak of other protestant beliefs, but what we would say is good works are a byproduct of a changed heart. We know that sinful man is unable to please God on their own (Rom 1). However, after we have been gifted faith we are saved, because we cannot have faith without it being given to us and we receive salvation by faith alone. At this point, our heart being replaced with a new one, we are now able to do good works that please God. We do not do these works because we are required to for salvation, but we now want to do these things as a byproduct of our being saved.

As a Protestant the issue of salvation is nuanced. I lean with C.S Lewis on this one. You aren’t going to lose your salvation if you sin, but if you continue down a path of sin you will likely change your heart towards God and your heart will reject him. It’s similar to the Catholic view that certain sins will change your heart towards God. I don’t think it’s that quick for most people depending on what we’re talking about. Change should happen in the Christians life. We also have to recognize the process of sanctification God must do to the believer.

If I ask my father “what if sin after I “accept” Christ”. He’ll say you weren’t saved in the first place. Protestantism is totally illogical and full of fallacies when you know what these dogmas mean. Until I became more educated and saw through it by research, I wouldn’t have known. A few years ago, while working on my Masters in theology, I was surprised when I discovered that the Protestant work-ethic that I have treasured for so many years is the exact same as the works-righteousness model that we so often condemn; the only difference between works-righteousness and the protestant work-ethic is that works-righteousness is pre-salvation, and the Protestant work-ethic applies to post-salvation. I wonder if the matters that you are discussing here, Trent have added to the Exvangelical issue we're seeing right now.

Good conversation. Basically Trent is debating Calvinists and not Arminians. These two systems relate faith and works differently. I'm probably more in the Arminian camp. We are saved by faith alone. Works are required subsequently to that experience since according to God's everlasting covenant He promises to write His law on our hearts and this requires our cooperation but works are not meritorious. These works are acts of faith then. God acts only out of His redeeming love. I can never deserve this love by anything I might do. If I could, it would not be mercy. Paul absolutely closes the door to any kind of meritorious deed but he still enforces good works as a condition of salvation. Otherwise, we could ignore the law with impunity.

Can you call something believing if it doesn't prompt you into acting differently? It's no wonder Luther had a huge problem with confession, and created a whole new set (some not so original) of heresies instead of trying to be less scrupulous and trusting God's mercy. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:9‭-‬10

I'm so glad to see you reference that video 1 minute in. As i've dipped my toe more into some of the constant Christian videos in my feed, i've found just so much hate and seemingly misinformation about Catholics everywhere. I don't normally watch Catholic videos or try to put religion too much into my feed over politic ones since I want to see the culture war and I know I am Catholic already. But seeing a clear lacking of apologetics on my part from doing so and having my eyes opened up to seemingly an abundance of hate of Catholics, especially by Christians that I was not aware of, it now seems important to add at least some apologetics to my feeds. If not at the least, to get the algorithm to recognize that i'm Catholic, and recommend Catholic videos over these other ones. I do think there are plently of good Christian youtubers out there that do good works but they sprinkle in a lot of snark and shade at Catholics as well as if we aren't part of the group at all. We should be united. The focus should be on the culture war and politics and not us wasting time on these squabbles with each other. I want to see less about Christians calling Catholic horrible names and more stuff about how both of us can unite to stop abortion or push back against Disney and the like.

Another religious apologist misleading his followers by using words like "most" and "often." Taking clips out of context and inserting one's personal interpretation is not conducive to the discussion. I was considering returning to the Catholic Church after years of being a Protestant for more than twenty years. As I listened to channels like this and Pints of Aquinas, I was reminded of the manipulation of the Catholic Church and why I left. FYI to those who really care to not alienate others: most Protestants do not believe what Trent is saying we believe.

I listen to Evangelical Protestant radio almost every day. Face it, it's only a step up from secular heathen radio at best, and are equal to it when the preachers say exactly those things in the clips that were _not_ taken out of context. I've heard exactly those words.

Protestantism was started by Marty Luther, an addicted heretic who broke his vows to God , shacked up with a nun, was anti semitic and died by hanging after a night of binge drinking

Great video that exposes that the Evangelical view on the necessity of baptism is a tautology of the Catholic view. Protestant: "Baptism isn't a necessary step for salvation. If you get baptized, it's because you were already saved. And because you were saved, you were obedient." Catholic: "So if I refuse to get baptized, is that a sign I'm not saved?" Protestant: "Right." Catholic: "So getting baptized *is* a necessary step for salvation!"

I know of many people in the Protestant tradition i grew up in that would get "re-baptized". I have empathy for how they must have felt, seeking reconciliation with Christ but having no proper sacrament with which to do so.
