Matthew Barry, casting director of 'The Notebook,' chats with ET's Kevin Frazier about Britney Spears' audition for the popular romance film. Matthew calls Britney’s audition ‘unbelievable’ and says she ‘blew us all away.’ He says the part came down to Britney and Rachel McAdams, who eventually won the role of ‘Allie.’ Matthew also reveals who else Britney was up against for the role including Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bosworth and Mandy Moore.

Britney was really great, but Rachel nailed it, and it was her time, to have a breakthrough with this and Mean Girls. However, Britney said herself, that she hated the Onyx Hotel Tour, the tour she did for the album she was doing at that time of the audition. The film came in the year 2004, right when she was touring and came together with Kevin Federline. Who knows where she could been now, if she got that role, and that year turned out very different for her. It's kinda funny, because Rachel and Ryan became a couple after they finished doing the movie. Would Britney and Ryan got together too? 🤭

Good on the casting director for giving Rachel McAdams credit. I get the ET host is excited about Britney auditioning for the role, but Rachel was ABSOLUTELY meant for this role, and the host never acknowledges it.

If you're a fan of this movie, it should be no shock to you that Britney auditioned for this movie and was being seriously considered for the role until Rachel McAdams got the role. The right actress was chosen.

The way the system is setup with auditioning is unfair. You get thrown a 5 page script as an actor the day before and supposedly can be “off book” but agents recommend being on book…. Bust your axx to the final 3 only to find out…. Crickets , no email, feedback etc. I understand casting can’t give to everyone but if you made it down to the wire I think an actor at least deserves some kind of feedback. It’s the least that can be done for someone who invested tons of time into YOUR PROJECT. Of course sag who makes sure they get their yearly dues wouldn’t do crap about this.

got nothing against Britney and wish her well, but I don't think at all she was anywhere near as good Rachel, I don't think there was a toss up at all between the two (other than money wise), and then all the other auditions too.

Even back in the day there were always rumours that the role was between Britney and Rachel. That's the reason why everybody wanted to see her audition tape for so long to confirm how good she was. Also Jessica Simpson was offered the role but she didn't audition.

Rachel is just head and shoulders above the average acting ability, so i dont blame them for choosing her. But Britney did AMAZING and showed that Crossroads really wasnt the best of her acting.

Britney needed two days of coaching to do that audition tape. That's not what casting directors are for. She needed a sustained period of acting classes to go after a movie like The Notebook. And let's face it...the whole "I lost myself in the Crossroads role so gave up acting" isn't true. She didn't get this role and didn't get the classes.

It is very normal for actors to get lost in their roles, some even suicide like the joker guy or that movie of jim carrey when he said he couldnt leave his character. Britney was a child actor, she even got a position with Natalie Portman before the MMC.

She did not “get so emotional so easily”… she controlled it. It’s called acting, she tapped into her own pain on purpose. Stop trying to make her look crazy. It’s transparent, you’re trying to make money off it. Stop.
