Wow. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I came off your Scale Degrees video, which had me with a lot of questions, then I read your comment where you suggested someone to watch this video and well, this video really explained it well to me. I'm surprised you don't have more subs, your style of teaching resonated with me and now you've most definitely leveled up my music production. Now, it's going to take me some time to really process it and get it ingrained in my brain, not to mention the practice aspect of it but man, you really opened my mind up to so many things now with this. Definitely subbed after that.

Hey, for the record this has helped me understand building chords quite a bit! I do wonder if you'll ever do a video explaining the 5/7 a little more in detail or just a few more examples of how it's used? I fully understood everything up to that.
@JonathanBeacham

The 5/7 is just a more versatile use of the 7 chord. Normally the 7 chord is diminished which you don’t find in CCM music but it’s found a lot in gospel. Playing the 5 chord over the 7th scale degree turns the 7 which is normally not uses into a more usable chord in modern Christian music.

it works great for beginners or guitar players because keys are just PITCH. However Remain flexible becuase there's other scales aside the MAJOR scale. if your advance, you'll also have to take into consideration other people's level of comprehension ( ALL 12 notes WORK) 95% of advance musicians might only learn these other 2 scales...Harmonic min or the melodic min. For some reason the Harmonic MAJOR isnt taught as much anymore.. even thou it's a familar sound in T.V. theme show..ect The (N6) Harmonic min b2 or Melodic min is also commonly used. Anyway....You can VISUALLY SEE it or comprehend these various scales on the PIANO....In C MAJOR/Amin....as the REFERENCE. The other 5 BLACK NOTES ( b2, b3 .....b5, b6, b7) Im just going to shift ONE NOTE at a time to obtain the other scale's Mix, maj7 = Circle of 5th......Pushing UP Ion, b7 = Cycle of 4th......Pushing DOWN ( b3, b6, b7) = SECOND Arpeggio of the 1, 4, 5 chord PUSHING DOWN from C MAJOR towards C min b6 = Harmonic MAJOR..................C Maj F min G 7 b3= melodic min C min F7 G7 b3, b6 = Harmonic min C min F min G7 b3, b6, b7 = NATURAL min C min F min G7 ( b2, b5) b2, b3 = Melodic min b2 ( N6) b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic min b2 ( n6) b3, b5 = Melodic min b5 b3, b5, b6 = Harmonic min b5 ( iii of HUNGARIAN MAJOR) b3, #4 = Melodic min #4. ( aka lydian dim or lydian b3 or iv of Harmonic MAJOR) b3, #4, b6 =Harmonic min #4...aka Double harmonic min or Hungarian minor. You can also REVERSE the process...PUSH UP from A min towards A MAJOR b3, b6, b7 A min D min E min b3, b6 A min D min E7 b3 A min D7 E7 b3, #4 A min B7 D#dim E Maj7 b6 A MAJ D min E7 2, 4, b6, 7 chord degree are all POSSIBLE full diminished They overlap ( common chords you can use to shift to multiple keys) Whether you count from C Harmonic MAJOR or A Harmonic min And C Harmonic min and A Harmonic MAJOR D, F, Ab, B B, D, F, G# Augmented chord are also symmetrical C, E, Ab or E, G#, C.....or Ab, C, E You can also use any augmented chords to play into a chord or help you shift keys it's works in the same way as MAJOR or DOMINANT chords. 3 into 4.....(the maj3 arpeggio into 4) G, B into C Augmented chords are simply all Maj3 intervals. You want to get used to playing ( V to I) or ( V into i) G7 into C MAJOR or C min ( B dim/G into C) E7 into A min or A MAJOR ( G# dim/E into C) D#dim into E ( B7 into E)....ect. Most of the time the N6 will get INSERTED..after the minor's tonic A Harmonic min b2 ( Bb lyd #6) or A melodic min b2 ( lyd #5, #6) Bb Maj chord...... Bb lyd #2, #6 = D double harmonic min. In a nutshell...you could stack the N6 chord to any kind of chords. You could also use it to help you CYCLE DOWN to the 4th. Bb lydian ( IV) to F MAJOR/Dmin Bb ion ( I ) to Bb MAJOR/Gmin Bb7 (V) to Eb MAJOR/C min you can also play Bb dim into B min/D MAJOR A min Bb7 C7 into F min A min Bbdim C7 into F min A min Bbmaj C7 D min/F MAJOR A min Bbdim C dim into C# min/E MAJOR notice the A lydianb3 to E Harmonic MAJOR... it's easier if you see this..... A min C Maj7 B7 into E MAJOR it's exaclty the same movement as F min Ab Maj G7 into C MAJOR. Hence C MAJOR into F min chord....Ab Maj G7 into C MAJOR or the #5/b6 degree chord ( counting from C MAJOR) can be alter to whatever or Maj7.. In a nutshell. Ab Lydian #6.....lyd #5, #6....Lyd #2, #5 or Lydian #2, #5 You can also play G#/Ab augmented into A MAJOR or A min. You can also apply the N6 after the C MAJOR's tonic. Db...dim, augment....ect Db/C# dim or augmented into D min. Anyways....A lydian b3 = G# phrygian b4. You could play A min G#7 into C# min/E MAjor...or A min B7 into E MAJOR or A min......C dim into C# min.. or A min C dim D# dim into E min or A min B7 into E min Once in C#min/E MAJOR....use the N6 to help you CYCLE back down C# min D maj7 to B min C# min D maj7 E7 F# min/A MAJOR C# min D dim E7 C# min D7 E7 C# min D dim E dim into F minor ( A min Bb7 C7 into F min) or play this A min B augment into C MAJOR A min B min E7 into A min ( ii, V i) melodic min version) A min D7 into G min ( G melodic min )...or Bb MAJOR i use the term A LYDIAN...so you'll see the A min's TONIC and associated with 4 or b6... Then you'll see it as 2, 4, b6, 7 A dim into Bb MAJOR.. It's totally cool once you see it or comprehend it. Aeo...............................dor Harmonic min Melodic min Harmonic min b2 Melodic min b2 Harmonic min b5 Melodic min b5 Harmonic min #4 Melodic min #4 ion #6 ion #2, b6 or I can list it like this.. Aeo Maj7 Harmonic min Dor Maj7 melodic min phry Maj7 Harmonic min b2 mix Maj7 IONIAN loc Maj7 Ion #6 these are just mode from the other scales. Im simply going to push up or play the LEADING TONE aeo b2 aeo b2 Maj7 aeo b5 aeo b5 Maj7 aeo #4 aeo #4 Maj7 dor b2 dor b2 Maj7 dor b5 dor b5 Maj7 dor #4 dor #4 Maj7 mix b6 mix b6 maj7 ( Harmonic MAJOR) Lets say I play A min C Maj C# dim into D min ( D melodic min) G7 A7 into D min The A7 = mix b6 Mix b6, maj7 = A HARMONIC MAJOR or A min.....D7 E7 ( mix b6) A min B7 E maj7 ( E HARMONIC MAJOR)

Yes that's true. At least they way that I like to teach and think about it, everything is just a variation of the major scale. Sometimes i like to refer to it as the mother scale lol. But then again the theory around music can be interpreted different ways. I love your input didn't expect to get such a thoughtful comment! Also in context of just practical uses of the number system, i was basing this video on those basic applications. I can do future videos going more in depth on expanding musical vocabulary, such as substitutions and usage of non diatonic chords and etc. Thanks again for the input, I truly appreciate it!

What about 7th chords? 2 - 3 - 7 are gonna be minor always? Same with major numbers? I'm just starting learning about this and I want to know how to make progression with 7th chords

If 4 is major, can't be a dominant chord for example? Always have to be major?

Check out my video “music theory crash course” it’s a two part video but it will answer your question much better than a written response. In short, seventh chords are an extension of the base chord 1&4 would be major 7th 2,3&6 are min7. 5 is a Dominant 7 normally written as (7) And the 7 is a diminished 7th chord The video will make it all connect. Once you get the basics down you’ll be able to apply this to other keys and open up your vocabulary.

Jonathon, There are no minor chords in the Nashville Number System scale. All the chords in the NNS scale are major. Using the C scale as an example...1=C Major, 2=D Major, 3=E Major, 4=F Major, 5=G Major, 6=A Major, 7=B major. The concept you are speaking of...only using the notes of a scale to form the chords of the scale...does not apply to the NNS. This scale (1, 2m, 3m, 4, 5, 6m, 7dim) is not the NNS. Paul Franklin is a world class Nashville musician who has a commentary on the NNS. Go to: NUMBER THEORY THE NASHVILLE NUMBER SYSTEM - PAUL FRANKLIN. It will verify everything I'm telling you. Best to you!

I’ll take a look sometime. Interesting to know, but I used that term as in most cases if not all when musicians reference the Nashville number system they are referring to the number system that I explain in this video. Sorry if this video came off as intentionally misleading.

Ultimately the goal is to get ppl to audiate and translate what they are hearing in a quick and uncomplicated way without letting too much “theory” slow down that process.

@@JonathanBeacham The ultimate goal is to get the musicians to play the correct chords quickly and simply. I've been playing and producing in Nashville, using the authentic NNS for more than 45 years, writing charts for some of the greatest musicians on the planet. What I'm telling you is that this scale (1, 2m, 3m, 4, 5, 6m, 7dim) is a scale that is not the NNS. It is a scale that dates back to the 17th century. Someone, somewhere close to Superman's secret cave started saying that it is the NNS and before you know it everyone believes it. All it does is create confusion. No one in Nashville uses this system. Recently a producer came to Nashville with some very elaborate charts, using this formula...it was a disaster! Musicians never knew if the chords were major or minor and spent much of the valuable studio time re-writing the charts. Having two number systems, as you imply in your response, is the wrong way to look at this. The NNS is simple and correct, and is the system everyone correctly assumes is THE number system. I wish you the best.

Thanks for you different perspective just teaching a number system (regardless of the correct name) that I know for a fact helps musicians and people who are learning a proven fast and effective way to play by ear and play what they are hearing. To each there own, there’s no one way to learn and I acknowledge that you have a different approach not incorrect just different. God bless you.
