I spent 4 years in two convent boarding schools run by Catholic nuns. The first convent was headed by a Mother Superior who was a sadist with a smile. The nuns in that Franciscan convent would turn away battered wives seeking shelter with them (I saw it with my own eyes and protested strongly in the name of Christian charity -- to no avail). The second convent was headed by a Mother Superior who was the living exemplar of kindness and humility, full of love for others and quietly sacrificing her own comfort for the sake of her nuns. I have forgotten her name but I still think of her fondly as one of God's own little saints, unknown to the world but cherished by Heaven.

Being a nun or a monk doesn't make you a saint. We are all humans and we have to fight the same passions. Taking your vows leads you to a path of discipline and self testing. Some make it, some don't. But it is a path most people out of the church can't understand. Anyway, it is always a treat watching Audrey Hepburn.

Those holy vows certainly don't make anyone a Saint! I spent five years working as the Technical Director/Stagecraft Instructor for a private Art Institute/'Children's Theater where my "boss" was a former Catholic school drama teacher and a Nun. She was a lousy administrator who used her religious background as leverage every chance she got and verbally abused the children she directed in our productions... something I refused to tolerate. Even so, I got accustomed to her taking credit for my design work simply figuring her God would take care of her later! But when I spotted a six-pack of Coors beer in the bottom drawer of her desk and she coyly admitted she liked a little something late in the day, I'd finally had enough then informed the institute's President of what I'd experienced and walked out. She finally resigned the following year in disgrace and retired to her Mother house. Needless to say I learned a great deal about hypocrisy during those years! But: THE NUN'S STORY is an excellent film where Audrey Hepburn shines as a woman whose own faith is challenged to the point where she too walks away.

I too have a story about my chemistry teacher in school. He was a militant atheist and despised all pupils with religious backgrounds. I got away with his regular beatings, but others didn't. He was as spiteful as you are, and he was in the habit of giving bad grades to the pupils he didn't like so that they would repeat the same academic year again (that's the law in my country). It has a happy ending though. Some kids came over their fear and reported him. Others followed and some parents threatened to sue the school. The school kicked him out and as far as I know he had difficulty making ends meet for the rest of his days till he finally died alone, friendless and poor some years ago. So as you see, being a bad person has nothing to do with religion. Religion sets rules and people try to keep up with them. Some succeed and some lose their way. The same goes with atheism. Being an atheist doesn't necessarily mean that you're not a piece of 💩

I went to a Catholic school in the Middle East and the nuns taught me all the good things that I needed to learn. They were saints amidst much persecution. They treated the Muslims who persecuted them just as kind as those who are Christians! Their love , kindness, dedication and ways is why I always have a special place in my heart. During summer I would stop by and they would always welcome me in and spend a few minutes even during their busy hours. They are humans. But I think many come to them with demands only heavenly creatures can provide

I had the very good fortune to personally know a Nun,she worked In the hospital where I was born,my mother had a difficult time giving birth to me,and I believe she may have been at my birth,she and my mother became friends,she stayed a friend of my family from the day I was born,till the day she died,she is forever in my thoughts. Like the story in this film,she spent quite a few years in Africa working as a nurse,but she wrote to us quite frequently,although we never saw her on a regular basis because of her work,she was always held in deep affection,and I will always think of her as a very special person I once had in my life.. This beautifully directed and acted movie is a stunning achievement in art and spirituality. The sacrifices made by young women to enter this life is difficult to imagine, and here it is on the screen. The book was a great achievement as well, and Katherine Hulme was no failure for having left the fold. She had an accomplished life both in and out of the monastery. “Live each day as a gift from God,” is probably the most eloquent phrase in the book. Peter Finch was terrific in this role and very memorable as the atheist doctor who greatly respects Sister Luke. A great film.

Hulme was the author, not the protagonist. She was never in a convent. Sister Luke is based on a women whom Hulme met while assisting refugees toward the end of the war. A nun's life is about discipline and serving God. I was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, in full habit, who not only gave (all 42 of us) an excellent education, but taught us to be disciplined and have good character. Since we were taught to respect and look up to the nuns, we were well behaved in class, and better pay attention, since there was no "after school help." Our nuns were dedicated teachers whose only goal was to give us a classic education which included guiding us in our spiritual life.🥰

You were lucky. I was terrified of the nuns. They were absolutely hateful creatures and not people of God. I and a group of former students tried to meet with them in 1998 but they were essentially in hiding because so many children wanted to sue them or just talk to them and ask why they were so hateful. The Catholic church helped to hide them.

Audrey Hepburn should have won a basket of awards for her portrayal of Sister Luc in this film …even for those of us who have undergone meditation retreats, anyone who can see her can empathize with the fact that the physician played by Peter Finch is correct--no matter how much she may love God, she’s not ‘wired’ to live a life of passivity, and it’s engrossing and beautiful to see her understand who she is, and to see her accept who she is, and love herself despite the boundaries of her personality in terms what she can and cannot authentically be.

That's sad to hear! we don't abandon Jesus because of Judas! you should have stayed and fought for the Church, for Jesus and for the faith. Because so many left the garden, the ravens came to destroy it later... bad priests came in, bad nuns, people who had no call and those who were called let Vatican II change their views. We should never abandon Jesus because of bad decisions inside the Church. I never abandoned Jesus because of that. I would be there, fighting, showing my disposition to serve Him. WE ARE THE CHURCH. If we have potential to bear good fruits we must bear good fruits and dedicate our love and time for that garden. The victory is not ours, it is His. If He wanted you there, you had to obey His call not matter what. I am happy for so many who didn't leave, who chose to stay and fight and do a great job. Their merit is true and the glory and the blessings are waiting them in Heavens. "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" -- Matthew 16:18.

@@1951kvk The decline in a reverential attitude toward God and the Mass certainly contributed to the decreasing numbers of nuns. There were also particular incidents which drove the sisters away. For example, when Pope Francis suggested that married women could simply use birth control pills to avoid deformed babies during the Zika epidemic, the press was shocked. He then countered with an offhand remark about how missionary nuns in Africa had been raped by the natives back in the 60s. Rome's solution was not to recall the nuns to take them out of harm's way or provide for guards. Instead, birth control pills were sent to the sisters, so they could avoid getting pregnant. This in his mind solved the problem and set a precedent for using the Pill against Zika. The appalling insensitivity then and now leaves one speechless. We the laity never heard this story back then, but you can imagine how quickly the news made the rounds in convent grapevines. This story was printed in national newspapers, where I read it only a few years ago. I'm still in shock.

Being raised a Catholic in Ireland post-Vatican II, I had some contact via family connections with both the Poor Clare Sisters and the Good Shepherd Sisters and hearing the beautiful Gregorian Chants of the Sisters in Latin eventually led to my attending a Traditional Mass in Latin, learning to recite and pray the Rosary in Latin - I moved away from Vatican II 18 years ago to become a traditional Catholic, even as an older gay man, at the same time that I cut all ties with the gay community and both rediscovered and returned to my Catholic faith, after advice from my Muslim friends, which also helped me to reconcile with my family, where initially, my being gay did cause a lot of conflict - today, despite Covid, I’m closer than ever to my family in Ireland, even though I have now lived in the U.K. for 21 years - I’d love to get the original text of the Nuns chanting and praying in Latin, as I think that is so beautiful 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪❤️

I never had a single bad experience as a raised in the Catholic Church Irish American in a rural part of the West. In those days, a young woman who wanted to study ANYTHING outside of marriage, who was raised Catholic, found intellectual as well as faithful opportunities in Catholic Convent ministries. This portrayal is, to this day, accurate. It seems that female faith, intellect, and service in today's world are not valued like it once was. To the detriment of those most in need of Christian love and help. This film speaks volumes to me. No matter how many times I watch it.

I grew up Catholic, and went to an all-girls Catholic boarding school (Convent of the Sacred Heart) for 3 years during high school. The SH nuns wore habits; they were wonderful, kind, intelligent teachers. However, many of my teachers left the order after I graduated in 1971. This was the decade right after Vietnam, free love and the hippie movement. Many Catholic nuns were now wearing civvies, not habits. My former teachers were young, beautiful and, I think, feeling as if life offered more than they found as nuns. I think they chose wisely; same for those who stayed in the order.

Ah...the RSCJ's. Once an incredible group, unfortunately decimated by those years of changes. They have educated four generations of women in my family and three are still members of the Society. There are barely three hundred left in the US. Very sad...they certainly had some incredible schools. The aunt of a brother in law was also in the Society for over 70 yrs until her death a few yrs ago. I will never forget her reflections on the changes, especially when they closed Kenwood. @@thomasmcnerney9745 Indeed. Classical education, which has stood me in good stead. It was a blow when Noroton CSH closed in 1972. Gorgeous property on a point in Darien, CT, right on Long Island Sound. (I went to CSH in Greenwich, which is still robustly alive as a CSH school. Lovely grounds, but sadly NOT on the water!) Noroton was converted into condos -- very, very nice condos. My English teacher for 3 years in high school was a lovely nun who left the order. I read about her betrothal in 1975 (to a former seminarian, ha!) in the NYTimes when I was a senior in college. What a shock! They are still married, childless, and teaching in Bridgeport, CT. This part of the movie has angered me for years. Asking Sister Luke to fail her test just because Pauline has lost some of her faculties or just plain old lazy in not studying in order to make the grade. This is cheating all the way around. Luke knew the value of studying hard and working for her grades and for the testing. Man, God doesn't ask us to just give someone the easy way out. He expects work and study in whatever we do. This wasn't a show of humility and the upper convent should have been notified by Sister Luke no matter what. Just a movie but this kind of thing happens in society----giving the lazy an easy road.
@thebelissima64
@thebelissima64 6 ай бұрын
It bothered me too. I didn’t understand as having Sister Luke cheating like this would be a sin in the eyes of God. And how dare Sister Pauline judge Sister Luke, saying the latter was full of pride? But it’s just a movie. When I was 13 years old I went to a boarding school run by nuns. The girls who were from rich families were treated better than the ones who were not. The mother superior was an elitist, r*acist witch. I do not have fond memories of that place.

@@AnneBoleynRome There is a difference between a sin against the Commandments and an infraction of the Rule. The latter is an imperfection that is declared in the Chapter of Faults, not Confession. Talking without permission was a fault, to be written down in those little books in chapel. Many rules not only formed character, they encouraged efficiency and focused the mind on work, instead of wasting time. The number of nuns was stretched thin among their institutions, so any inclination to idleness was swiftly eliminated. Some of these ideas were carried over into Catholic schools, where pupils consistently outperformed public school students, even though the former had shorter hours. We were sent home early on Wednesdays so kids from public school could have two hours of religion classes to study the Bible and prepare for the sacraments. The scene where Sister Luke was attacked was shocking for many reasons. First, it was unthinkable to lay hands on a nun. Second, to see a sister without her veil in a torn habit was unprecedented at the time. All of this took place in the 1930s, which also made it unimaginable. In the book, Sister Luke was given a new habit to replace her shredded one because of her impulsive act. Convents literally counted every penny, and a new habit would be instantly noticed by everyone, because of the expense it incurred. That black wool serge was durable, but expensive.

The rules exist for a reason, i.e. they are not arbitrary. This is similar to why military recruits are subjected to boot camp. A civilian might think that doing drills while being shouted at constantly is unnecessary, but such things encourage the civilian to stop thinking like a civilian and start thinking as a soldier. For example, doing drills helps a person to know how to move as part of a group, and constantly being shouted at mimics the stressful situations a soldier would likely find him/herself in.

Good movie but how controlling and hypocritical some of the head nuns were. Telling her to deliberately fail her exams to please this other nun was just stupid. They talk about being honest. Well that isn't honest. Some of these head nuns enforcing the rules weren't in a position to be in charge. From what I've seen and read , it was as if they really liked welding the power. Then deliberately sending her to that asylum in Brussels just for spite because she passed her exams in the end was really low, knowing how much she wanted to go to the Congo

She wasn't sent to the asylum as a punishment. She was sent because she was not sufficiently advanced in her spiritual life. There's another movie of which the ending a lady was in a bar, having the last smoke of her life before entering. And another who went in the cloister and broke off the engagement. These are nice movies for formation as well. For this movie, the scene when she is with the novice sums up everything--the obedience, etc.

I attended parochial school in The Bronx. In the 50s, it was a bit difficult. The nuns were extremely strict and actually that environment was not the best for some children such as myself. However, I received a terrific education. And I deeply appreciate my parents and the Catholic School system for giving me that. I do think some of the nuns were disillusioned with teaching large groups of small children and may have regretted their decisions. My brother was taught by the "Brothers". And I did think that they used exccessive force when disciplining the boys. I will say we didn't have any of the shenanigans. In schools that we have today!

Possible SPOILER - That directive for young nun to deliberately fail her exams to "teach her humility" is the dumbest thing of all. She wasn't the one who was jealous. Wouldn't deliberately failing be lying? And not even to herself, but openly, to others, to their faces? Why can't the other, jealous nun be taught the value of studying harder and not being envious of others who do better than her? So essentially, one who had superior knowledge is sent to rot in some hospice, where her talent and knowledge are wasted, while the subpar candidate is awarded a desired trip to Congo, where people of Congo will receive a subpar medical service because the candidate sent was chosen based on politics and not on merit. I don't see how that was in any way "God's will". Sounds awfully like real life, you don't need to go to monastery for that.

Crazy stuff indeed. And all that "I accuse myself of" is a recipe for how to produce a neurotic. The funny thing is that in Christian theology the Accuser is a title the Devil bears -- that's one of his functions, to torment people and accuse them before God. It's one of the reasons he's known as the Enemy.

She wasn't "punished severly" Pay better attention to the dialogue and leave your own misguided illusions out of it. You've taken that particular scene completely out of context to support your own ignorant narrative. The Chapter of Faults was explained in a scene prior to the one you have referenced.

That kind of rule without any forgiveness, which is what Jesus was about, is blasphemous...........and I have a lot more issues with the "Holy Rule" within the Catholic Church,......it isn't reflective of Jesus at all!!

At age 10 I was in an expensive boarding school with utterly evil nuns. I dread to think what poor orphans had to endure!!! I don't think that I am able to watch this as much as I love this actress.

I was six years old when I saw this movie with my mom. I knew right away i wanted to be a nun. So I went to the only catholic school around. it was 25 miles away. Every sister said i had a a call but I didn’t know if you had a disability you couldn’t go in the convent. I tried every place possible but each place said no. The one convent I visited burned down. It was struck by lightning. And the second one just disappeared. Something about the first convent scared me because it was for women with disabilities. But they said no.

Nun hidden story has been for more than a 1,000 years. Priests also lived with women in their parishes and had children by them, then abandoned them when ordered to by the church. Pregnant nuns endured physical punishments, including beatings, that could result in miscarriage. Sometimes the pregnant nuns were expelled from the convent and forced to survive however they could; there were few options for a lone woman with a baby. In some cases, a baby would be declared a foundling, left at the convent door by unknown parents, and raised in the convent or, sometimes, farmed out to a local family. It wasn’t unusual in past centuries for parents in the world to give their unwanted surplus children to God by dumping them in monasteries or convents to be raised to serve as nuns or monks. Only recently has much attention been paid to the sexual abuse of nuns, which continues today.

After first watching many docs about monestic life before watching this, I feel like this movie puts it in a stricter and more negative light than reality. The nuns and monks I have heard talking about their lives have been joyful and smiling, and they do fun things together as well as prayer and work. This sentence from one of the nuns is too strict and not biblical: “We will pay particular attention to the removal of faults,the control of passions, and the acquiring of virtue so that you may be born again in Christ.” It goes the other way around according to the bible. First born again by grace when receiving Jesus as lord and saviour, and then the holy spirit fills us to help us change from the inside out.
