A stone called the Odin Stone used to stand near the Stones of Stenness in Orkney. This video examines the meaning of holed standing stones in Western Europe as preserved in folklore and tradition and explains how such a stone came to be associated with the god Odin. The stone potentially reveals a deep connection between Celtic and Germanic mythology.

Bulgaria has a few places with healing stones, ( промушилки ) "to pass through". Passing through stone hole or arch, leaving the old clothes behind is associated with rebirth. One such of place in Скрибина has known to have a dweller and protector, a big black snake, a shape-shifter which can manifest as person sometimes. Snakes are associated with healing in many cultures. Changing their skin is a symbol of rebirth.

There was also a Nordic tradition (described during the 1800's but the tradition was likely many centuries old by then) to heal sick children through the hole made by two branches of a tree, having grown into each other and forming a loop. I was unaware of this being done with stones as well, but find it likely to be due to celtic influence rather than the other way around. It also reminds me of the old descriptions of how certain individuals would "walk through the earths jewlery", as it can be translated, in a kind of marriage ceremony between brothers at arms or others who wished to create a strong bond between each other. The reason for the association with Oden/Odin, I suspect, come from his shamanic and ritualistic nature. Traveling between worlds, shapeshifting, forming bonds between kings and warriors (such as himself and the berserkers). And he was, after all, a king. A leader with, among other things, a juridical role and a need to make compromises at times. The similarities with a round holes similarity with Draupners shape was likely also a factor. As for the rope, there is a song about how he sacrificed himself to himself, by a noose in a tree, while being stabbed with a spear. This may all be partially connected to fertility, as indicated in your following comment. The female tightening noose, the male thrusting spear, an object passing through an opening. The extremity of a finger or arm going into the hole of a ring. Fertility, be it for children, fortune, kinship or a productive buisness partnership. We know, after all, that the power of recreation was more respected in pre-christian Europe than later in time.

@friend_trilobot
@friend_trilobot 2 жыл бұрын
Evidence would suggest that despite the similarity to "hole" it's from an old english (and therefore germanic) family of words heavily associated with health - it shares a root with the heliand or "healer", a saxon name for christ and 'was hael' or "good health", the origin of wassail. Its actually related to "heal" and with an original literal meaning of "whole" (but with connotations of health going back to its proto indo European root) so the opposite almost; "hole" goes back to a different root meaning to conceal, which is also almost opposite of modern "hole" as well but in a different way - however, I wouldn't be surprised if people associated the two words in later times when they looked more similar to each other

I can't remember where I heard this, but I remember somebody saying that Odin was said to be any place where light is let through one spot. Like when the sun light shines a beam through an opening in the tree canopy or an open spot on the roof. Just thought of that now as these stones are meant to replicate that effect. Its weird when the light gets concentrated like that, when you go hiking and you walk underneath a beam of light like that, concentrated beam from the canopy above, when it hits your skin its like this full body tingle you get...its great.

Yes, it would seem to my mind that in Norse tradition Thor was more closely aligned with most oaths, but there are likewise examples of oaths sworn to Odin, or Odin's mountain. The correspondence between Lug and Odin is far from exact, and in many ways Lug is probably closer to Perun or Thor, seen as a defender of the land, but he was the war god like Odin and seems to have a similar origin. Dagda, however, carries more the personality of Odin as well as the allfather title, yet is associated primarily with weather, fertility and magic.

What a godsend this is! I've been very intrigued by the Norse-Celtic connection. Initially I thought all that knotwork was Irish, but the Irish were so heavily (more than I knew) influenced by the Norse that their cultures blended. I would more equate Odin the One Eyed God with Balor One Eye of the Fomorian giants, who Lugh of the Tuatha De Daanan slew by casting his spear through Balor's One Eye. We also have the Germanic/Norse God Tews/Tyr with one hand and the Tuatha De Daanan original King Nuada with one hand. It is reported that Indians used large magnetic copper ingots (made with iron impurities) as "medicine." So we are ignorant of the ancient ways. Perhaps next time we will resurrect them!

Probably not. The oath stones are associated with the Celtic god Lugh. Some stones were associated to Odin much later by Norse Vikings and settlers in the 800’s AD after they had taken Celtic land. But ever since the Bronze Age these stones were associated with Lugh and Lugh has two eyes. There is a little overlap between Lugh and Odin and some may have seen them as the same god worshipped by different people but their images are completely different. For instance the Romans associated the Greek Hermes with their Mercury and they also associated the Germanic god Odin with Mercury. So does that mean that Lugh, Odin, Mercury and Hermes are all the same god? No it doesn’t. They all have strikingly different images, legends and domains to their respective cultures.

@@draxthewarlocktitan5217 you know I just got done reading the poetic edda, and I read the prose edda , and am halfway through the saga of the volsungs.. I think maybe the norns seem sort of similar to the matres , and the story of the sword in the rock is in the saga of the volsungs (thought that was a king arthur or merlin type story) Celtic myths are different though, and seemed too complicated for me to understand at first read through

Doesn't Stonehenge have 56 holes for lunar cycles? Maybe it was a definition of knowledge to go someplace, pilgrimage, or a "world" like Enoch saw. It probably built on that. I don't know a whole lot, but I think things exploded in Irish folklore randomly when several people became schizophrenic because I talk to certain things and inside out, out inside. He associates his anger with a lightning strike. He then becomes lightning that strikes and things happen when lightning strikes back.

Consider the esoteric and spiritual meaning. Is that hole also know as the Needles Eye? To pass thru requires much purity. The seed of purity promised in the Christian New Testament is a purity achieved with strict vegetation diet, also recieving the New Adam seed. These purfications are with those who escape the deception of murderer god. They do not make their body a grave with carcass eating and therefore are gaining a goodheart of flesh and escaping the hardheartedness . Peace
