I introduced my English teacher to Epic when we started our Odyssey section (she loved it and I bought a physical copy of The Odyssey to read all of it since we skipped over parts in our class reading). Our final project was to make a Wanted poster for an antagonist in The Odyssey (or Odysseus if we wanted to). That included drawing the character, writing down specific character traits that they are mentioned to have and then writing a paragraph as to why they’re important to The Odyssey. I chose Poseidon. Y’know the guy that didn’t show up at all and is only mentioned in the parts we read. My paragraph on why He was important was more of me trying to convince myself that he was even a character at all. I got a good grade on that project, but I don’t recommend copying my example.

@@danitini14 yeah, my argument was ‘well Polyphemus calls for Poseidon to do all this bad shit to Odysseus and guess what happens? The same bad shit Polyphemus asks for-so Poseidon was clearly listening and therefore he is a character. Please do not make me redo this assignment I spent most of my time drawing Poseidon and cannot afford to get a bad grade on this.’ I wish I had taken a picture of the paragraph I made, like I did the drawing of Poseidon, because it genuinely makes me laugh at how stubborn I was to make him a character just because he was in Epic and I for some reason just had to have that connection between both of my, then very intense, interests.

When we studied The Odyssey in high school, I felt like such a boss because I was the only one who finished reading it. So, to study it, our teacher assigned an island or stop or saga for each of us. And we did a presentation on it for the whole class. I got assigned Polyphemus so that was fun. Anyway, because we didn't have enough students in class with how our teacher divided the topics, the presentations never reached Ithaca, I think. Or at least it never reached Odysseus returning to the castle. Fast forward to the end of the Odyssey, our teacher took over presenting the final topics and when she asked what the final challenge Penelope posed for Odysseus to prove that he was in fact Odysseus, I kid you not, no one raised their hands. I knew the answer, so I slowly raised my hand. Teacher saw and she did acknowledge me, but she wanted to check one more if anyone else had finished the Odyssey. She even gave a clue that the final test involved a bed and, predictably, several giggles broke out. When she finally called me to share what happened in the end, I felt like such a boss. Long story short, read the Odyssey. It's Epic.

honestly i never expected the musical to match up 1:1 with the actual events, especially with the 558 easter egg, and the year on circe's island being mostly skipped over. but i also found that a fair bit of it does incorporate elements well. like how polyphemes shows the "nobody" strategy, or how there are other ways aludes to the SA without being explicit. or gives genuinely great and meaningful addons and explanations the oddessy doesn't give. like how "my goodbye" explains why athena didn't help out in the story until later on, and how "warrior of the mind" explains how athena and odysseus met and why athena should care

I had to explain the part with the Cyclops,(Yeah,I checked out the material just in case,so I didn't mention the winions and all that stuff.)It was super easy and fun,and I started talking about Odysseus, his plan, his mistake and the impact in the story. I got a bit excited and I even started mimicking Odysseus revealing his name to the Polyphemus. The teacher was like "Wow,you really *love* the Odyssey, don't you? 10/10!" I would have passed either way,but only a musical can get me to speak as passionately about something.

I think adaptations are important for exposure, and a spring board for exploring further and getting people into the source material, and I love them for that

Honestly I thank you so much for this Musical as it has inspired me to read The Odyssey! Not only that- but I also The Iliad, The Song of Achilles, and Circe. It’s fair to say I have a bunch of reading to be doing heheh

I had my high school Odyssey experience before I even discovered EPIC, and I honestly think that made it even more fun. The delight I felt when finding out that in this version, Odysseus DIDN'T cheat on Penelope with Circe cannot even be described, and it's really fun watching what Jay decided to change and to keep from the original. For school, I only had to read an abridged version, and EPIC is really making me want to read the whole thing in full.

fun fact: as someone who as studied the odyssey times and times again, i love listening to EPIC for this exact reason! i love the changes you've made, and seeing Odysseus more of an actual human and less of the ✨great epic hero✨that he is in the odyssey just makes me love this musical even more. So, keep it up with the good work man💪

EPIC was actually a bonus assignment in my Greek mythology class. The prof provided a playlist people could listen to if they wanted (while we were reading the book, and there was an extra credit essay to compare the source material and EPIC)

My first listen of Epic I thought I was going crazy thinking I had forgotten or misremembered parts of the story. EPIC is a great rendition of this story, though. Especially with the change to focus on Odysseus' character motivations. Great change

I’m so glad you mentioned this! I actually started to read the Trojan cycle and was curious to see the differences between epic and the odyssey! There are certainly many (you make Circe infinitely more likable). Kiddos in class, go read the Odyssey. Epic will lowkey hit harder (I sobbed during the gathering of shades)

I'm a Latin tutor and my students often have to translate texts about the odyssey. I also read the original, so I can't tell my students wrong things, but it's really hard to always have some Epic song stuck in your brain whenever they say something about it 😂

my school had a unit on the monomyth and I chose to write an essay for my final about how your version of the story exemplifies the archetypes and stages of the monomyth in different ways than the original Odyssey! It was super fun to write :D but yeah I agree everyone should be careful about the different details you've added and changed lmao 😭

I do wish this was around when I was in high school (man, i just sounded so old ha ha). We read it in Freshman English (did not like my English teacher of two years because she was mean and strict and believed everyone should get it on the first try) and I understood maybe half of it because we read shortened or retellings of the stories throughout the years, but because it was told in the form of a very long poem, and I have a hard time understanding poetry sometimes, I couldn't really understand what was happening the other half of the time. If I had EPIC back then to help me understand at least the basics of what was happening during certain moments, I would have probably enjoyed it. I'd read whatever section our teacher made us read, then listen to whichever song that section is from and compare the two. I'd have context clues to know what was a creative liberty vs what was actually happening.
