"The Old Faucet" (PART 1) - REAL-TIME video with annotations explaining techniques and steps.
Learn to paint realistic watercolors with Lana Privitera. Master wet-on-wet and realistic detail.
MATERIALS for "The Old Faucet" (read more below)
PAINTS:
* Winsor & Newton: Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Permanent Rose.
* Daniel Smith: Cobalt blue, Sap Green
BRUSHES: Robert Simmons series 875 - Round White synthetic: #4, #6 and #8 and an inexpensive white Nylon from Cheap' Joe's to mix my paints.
PAPER: Arches sheet 140 Cold Press (300 grs NOT) Fine Grain, 100% cotton, cut in a piece 11” x 15”
OTHER SUPPLIES:
2 glasses with water: one to clean the brushes while we work, another with clean water to add to our paint mixes.
- Pencil HB 2, Staedler Noris, or mechanical 0.7 - for little details.
- Soft synthetic eraser.
- Round plastic palette.
- Absorbent paper towels, cut in fours. I like the brand Viva.
- Artist tape: My current favorite: General Brand Black Masking Tape 1 in. x 60 yd.
If you want to use masking liquid, these are the supplies I suggest you use:
Pebeo Drawing Gum Bottle, 45 ml - is my current favorite.... or Winsor& Newton.
Grafix RCPU Rubber Cement Pick-Up, 2 by 2-Inch
Soft synthetic brush, with a good tip, to use with the masking liquid.
- A little container to hold the masking liquid needed in this session.
- A small container with a piece of soap to rub our brush in it before we dip the brush in the masking liquid. Or you can use some detergent in the water. It saves the brush from becoming solid with congealed masking liquid.
- Light Pad - to trace your sketch on the watercolor paper. Mine is a A-4 ultra-light.
I DO NOT HAVE A PATREON ACCOUNT ... But I teach ONLINE WORKSHOPS

I saw the link, I haven't had a chance to watch it just yet...but I have seen the results. I'm still a beginner working with Cotman colors...learning color mixes, consistency, etc. (I'm partially color blind, but I'm seeing a potential math to this that might enable a work around).

Thank you. Im finding it frustrating at the moment.@@Lanaprivitera..I want to pull the trigger on the professional grade guache and watercolor. ...I'm experienced enough to feel/see the difference. YOUR color wheel has inspired me to slow my haste a bit. I have to learn this (because I'm not so color sightful...and I'm going to do this so that...maybe some folks can experience the color blind experience, with charm, class and humility). Thank you for your work and inspiration...and your wishes :)

@@Lanaprivitera thanks a lot for your wonderful knowledge, I will be waiting for the new projects, right now I'm working with this one, I want to create a similar magic. It has been recorded in real time although the title said time lapse, I think it maybe because of the time an artist takes to observe their subjects closely.
@Lanaprivitera
@Lanaprivitera 4 жыл бұрын
@@JKalit Yes, I believe originally was in lapse time... I watched it last night and realized it was in real time. Hummmm . I also realized that I move the brush a lot between my finger, LOL. That is to keep/find a sharper point in my brush. I do that automatically, without thinking apparently! :-D

Beautiful painting my dear friend. I noticed you have a habit of holding the picture in your hand 😊 I can paint seeing such videos but I really want to learn how to paint using only the original photo. I hope it would come with practice. Right now I am just watching tutorials like this on KZfaq and practicing. I have whitenights watercolors and I am 9 watercolors sketches into my practice 🙈

This is awesome! Question...when you say wet on wet, do you wet the paper with clean water, then add the watery paint in palette, or do you use the watery paint in the palette to wet first, then apply the thicker layer? Does that make sense? Your colors blend so nice, just wanted to know how you achieve it.
@Lanaprivitera
@Lanaprivitera 4 жыл бұрын
Very good question Curt! Thanks for watching the video! Yes, I use the wet-on-wet technique in 2 different ways, just like you mentioned. 1 - Sometimes I use clean water to wet the paper and then drop color into it. 2 - Sometimes I use a watery colored wash to get the paper wet and then drop other colors (of a creamier consistency) into that wash. :-) I would use clean water for a sky, but a colored yellow wash to start painting grass...

@Lanaprivitera
@Lanaprivitera 4 жыл бұрын
.... because it's just a faucet on an old sink, it looks that way. That is the background: White porcelain. ;-)
@michel.b5752
@michel.b5752 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, you could have painted some traces of rust, or shadows, on the white porcelain. Like on the photograph you started with. That is the way it looks ! Then the faucet will not stand "out of nowhere". REALISTIC watercolors comprehend the whole thing: object and what it stands on. Actually I have inadvertently found since, part II where you indeed paint the background. Then I don't understand your answer !! Or did you forgot that you finished the painting ? I am puzzled
@Lanaprivitera
@Lanaprivitera 4 жыл бұрын
@@michel.b5752 I'm confused, you must be missing something here... My reference photo DIDN'T have rust (that photo that I hold in my hand in the video). The finished painting DOES have rust and shadows...that I actually invented to improve the composition. THAT FIRST IMAGE YOU SEE at the beginning of the video, IS NOT a photo. IT'S THE FINISHED PAINTING. And this video is for beginners to learn some simple realism, not hyperrrealism. ;-)
@michel.b5752
@michel.b5752 4 жыл бұрын
I look at the photo , for example in the video at 11:54, and I see dark stains going up and down from the faucet. So it is not white. Don't lie to yourself. Also it is time to teach beginners (though only advanced beginners are able to paint this) that the subject has not to rise "out of nowhere". I understand that you don't like criticism, therefore you must publish only among your friends and don't get exposed to public. Why you did not answer to my remark about part II ?
@michel.b5752
@michel.b5752 4 жыл бұрын
No, it does not. Look f or example in the video at 0:52, 5:02 or 11:54, or any time, there are dark stains going up and down from the faucet. If you don't accept criticism, publish only among your friends.
