In my country (Romania) there is an old saying that translated in English would be something like "this is an old chinese man's work" and we use it for very precise, detailed and time consuming work.

I watch this as a wood craftsman myself and I marvel at what he is doing. I sit here smiling and then it dawn's in me that he is not just creating beautiful pieces but he is giving joy to those who are interested.

@@fascinationimitationsimula3429 Calipers have been around since 9 AD at least... just because it´s a digital caliper, it doesn´t mean anything... he could change that for an analogical one without relevant difference. also, his tools are anything but crappy. He has exquisite hand tool, just because they are hand tools, doesn´t mean they are "crappy" quite the contrary

@@chicoarraes this is a wonderful channel, and that elderly gentleman has a talent that is rare these days. There will always be people out there that try to shoot holes in everything they see. it's a mentality where the commenter isn't necessarily trying to disparage the video, but instead feels proud and clever that he/she saw something or thought of something nobody else did. These folks usually have an inflated self ego, and internally think that they are smarter than everyone around them. They were taught this by their parents and rewarded when exhibiting this behavior. Just do what I do: ignore the comments and feel bad for the poor soul that made the comment. Remember: words only contain the power that YOU give them.

Me too, I have my doubt that he uses a table saw then film the last piece as a magic show. I have use the same type of saw working on a furniture factory, you can't make it straight.

This codger is no ordinary 'peasant', but very obviously a very skilled and intelligent craftsman. The complexity of the projects is really mind-blowing and a delight to watch. And the serenity of the surroundings make one realise what we miss out on in 'civilised surroundings'. This is really bliss to watch!

The redwood he used in the video was a kind of Rosewood, It is often seen around Southeastern Asia. Chinese people more often to use it on luxury wood furnitures.

It is a soft wood more frequently used in making pencils. It cannot be used for making furniture. If with teak, you can use a rafter which is just 1 inch in thickness, while with this red wood, it will have to be 2-2.5 inches thick, else it will break. But this is good for carving and nothing else.

World Expo was held in Shanghai in 2010. That’s the China Pavilion. The design idea was to strip Chinese architecture down to its essence. When all the decorative parts are eliminated, this is what’s left. That’s my understanding of that China Pavilion.
