I wasn't "sexually" abused as a child but I was "emotionally" abused. When I was a teenager I became a Christian but I still had "hatred" for my father in my heart for how he made me feel about myself. I didn't know what to do about it because I knew I shouldn't feel this way about my own father. So one day my prayer to God was different about this situation. Instead of asking God's "help" to change, I just opened up to God about how I felt and honestly told Him how much I couldn't "stand" my dad because of what he did to me. I shared how much he hurt me and how much I wanted to hurt him back. I didn't ask for "help" I just opened up, realizing God already knew. I found myself in tears during that prayer because I knew I shouldn't feel this way but I told God about it anyways. Well, I can't give an exact date or time but I remember a situation occur between my dad and I that BEFORE I'd have a certain negative reaction to but instead I told my dad, "hey dad sorry about that, I'll keep that in mind." then I shocked myself when I added, "You feel like a pizza, my treat and maybe we can rent a movie?" His opened mouth face was in shock and so was I, LOL! I don't know what happened but God caused a miracle in my heart. Since then, the anger I once felt changed to compassion for my dad. My whole attitude changed which affected his as well. We became so close I was astounded and so grateful. Years later he apologized for the things he said to me during my childhood and teen years but honestly I harbored not an inch of animosity toward him and simply hugged him and said, "Dad, it's ok, I never even think about it, I just want us to move on, love you." He since has passed on and I'm so very grateful to our Heavenly Father for what He did for me. Be honest with God about what you're feeling. He already knows but he needs us sometimes to "release" it to Him so HE can carry it and start a great work and change in us. Renewing our minds is not a "mechanical" or "formulaic" process it's a very "personal" process which involves God's Word AND our fellowship with our Father and Jesus Christ, the Author AND Finisher of our faith.
