The Old Pioneer Cemetery of the old settlers who came to Durant, I.T. in the early 1880's. Also, the burial place of the Founder of Durant, OK, Dixon D. Durant and his family. Who of his family traveled along the later Trail of Tears in the early 1840's and settled on this land. Durant was established in 1872 along the MKT Railroad, which it is now the Union Pacific.

My sympathy for all those who passed while being forced to walk the Trail of Tears. Blessings to the descendants who settled here. Thanks for sharing this history. Please read the names of the children's graves. Many never heard their names as they passed so young in life. Interesting that Dixon is commemorated by the D.A.R. is there a family connection to the Revolutionary Farm?

That is a good question. The Durant Family came from the Attala County, Mississippi and they are a part Choctaw/French descendant. So, they may have a revolutionary farm back in the Mississippi homelands. Good question though.

Spray shaving cream on the stones. It won't hurt them and brings drastic relief to the inscriptions. I've been skulking around cemeteries for 40 years. I know what I'm doing.

Yes, I have heard shaving cream will work too as well! When I was on with the headstone restoration training, we used D2 and it did well also. Thanks for recommending!
