Thanks, I loved the little steam valves. I'm sure there was some disappointment when it didn't have the power to cut wood after the many hours you spent building it. Thanks for sharing.

Suggestion, you might try either going with a thinner leather belt or a light rubber belt. I'd say your loosing most of your drive power in the thickness of the belts. I understand you have to have slippage, you might even look at different types of cloth like denim, or cloth from a pair of of light Carhartt's, fold it over and stitch it on both sides to prevent ravelling. I suspect the entire saw would function better and you could possibly cut balsa. Maybe rubber for the saw belt and denim for the carriage belts. Best of luck
@1977JohnJ8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The problem wasn't so much of power but speed, as in sawing vs carriage feed... a change in pulley size and it cuts just fine and at a much more scale speed. I haven't run this in over a year but the belts actually worked quite well.

Great sawmill :) its clever how it all works mechanically, some great machining of those pulley wheels, is it smokeless coal you use?
@1977JohnJ9 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's actually steam coal which a bit softer than some anthracites and a bit smokier. You need something faster burning in a tiny firebox (I do anyway :) ). But if you have a good draft and healthy fire you don't see a whole lot of smoke.
@mattseymour86373 жыл бұрын
@@1977JohnJ thanks for the advice. So would I better with standard steam coal in a 1 inch traction engine or 3.5 inch loco rather than Welsh staam coal?

how does the log cart move can you you do a video on how you build the saw mill
@1977JohnJ8 жыл бұрын
+Carolina coaster There is a cable attached to both ends of the carrige that winds around a shaft driven by the belts and pullys. I think other makers used this system but if you look at plans for an early Frick sawmill, that'll give you a good idea on how it works.
@kit60418 жыл бұрын
What a cute little thing xp. Why does it stop and start while cutting though?
@1977JohnJ8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Had to stop and start because the carriage feed was too fast. I've since changed the drive pulleys and all is well. Haven't run this in quite some time though. Thanks for your comment!
