A video tour through the culture and traditions of the the Snow Country in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
Niigata has a very long coast line - 635 km. But there are lots of mountains too! In fact, the area referred to as Snow Country has several mountains that rise more than 2.5 km above sea level!
Now this area has a very unique climate. It has the highest population density for the amount of snowfall that it gets. That is a confusing sentence. What it means is, that, although there are places that get more snow than this area, a lot less people live in those places! Actually the population of this area is about 200,000 people. And routinely 3 - 5 meters of snow falls every winter!
Despite the very severe climate conditions, The Snow Country has been occupied for thousands of years. Some unique survival techniques have developed to cope with the snow.
Today, we will not travel that far back however. We will focus on the EDO PERIOD (the 17th century) and beyond, to modern times.
Please enjoy this brief video tour.
