I met Mr. Paige in Cooperstown. He was sitting alone, outside the Otesaga Hotel. When I approached him he muttered "No autographs..." I said "Mr. Paige, I don't want your autograph. Just want to tell you I read 'Maybe I'll Pitch Forever'... Satch's face brightened like a morning sunrise. We had a wonderful little chat. I still didn't want his autograph. But damn, wish I had a picture of that moment. Leroy Robert Paige... The Greatest.

Very interesting. Satchel Paige is such a familiar and prominent name in baseball lore, but I never knew he spent so much time playing in the DR and Mexico. Great video.

I live in Mobile and as a kid my dad would always tell me about satchel paige and his career as a kid in the train station. (Which is named after him) how he picked up peoples bags and what not. Which is how he got the name satchel. He was inspirational. Nice video

I saw Satchel Paige pitch. He was wearing an all-black uniform which made him stand out at the Old-Timers game at Dodger Stadium, around 1974. I was a youngster then but was amazed at how hard he threw, almost seemed unfair that he only had to face old, retired players. Stan Musial was in the game, I don't know if they faced each other, but I know that Stan the Man played because I remember the name "musical" and my father said, no "that's Stan Musial"

Very well researched documentary on a legendary star. Here are facts about Satchel Paige even I was unaware of. Reliable as a drunken 10 year old, Paiges eccentric behavior was tolerated for one reason only. He was absolutely brilliant!!! Paige was a greater gate attraction than Babe Ruth. Paige skipped from team to team and town to town like Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive. Under the scathing racism of Jim Crow, Paige kept the black game afloat with his drawing power. Much to the disdain of racist White America, the Negro Leagues superseded the white brand in talent. Beyond any doubt! Teams of Black All Stars routinely whipped Major League All Star teams in the states and overseas. It's a fact that it became so extreme that Baseballs White Supremacist Commissioner Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis limited the number of top players that competed. In the documentary Baseball, the marvelous narrator John Chancellor stated that of the 438 documented interracial games, the Black Players won 329 of them!!! This was all the more remarkable when Chancellor stated that black players excelled under conditions that white players never had to face. Civil War historian Shelby Foote stated that he didn't know how they played baseball under those conditions. I know how. They were superior athletes! Paige may have been the greatest talent of them all. Even with shoddy bookkeeping it's estimated that Paige pitched in 2,500 games and won 2,000 of them! By comparison, the Major League record 511 victories by Cy Young seems like that of a sore armed sandlotter. This is why segregation existed. Black athletes were simply too good to be allowed to compete on a level playing field. Racist Whitey would have had his feelings hurt. Good Riddance.

I remember listening to Paige when he pitched against the Red Sox at the age of 59 on radio. I expected him to be bombed but he got out of the inning unscathed.

There is a tale of Paige playing in Puerto Rico for the Guayama Brujos (Witches), he was in the mound of his local park when he reportedly saw a ghost beside him. He ran away, abandoning the game and never pitched again in that park.

Sucks to think this man was an absolute phenomenon and a lot of people dont even know his name. I mean in his 40s he was winning games in the major leagues! And this was a time before we knew about supplements, the importance of a well balanced diet and the perfect amount of calories for your workouts, advancements in sports science, and the advanced recovery time for sports related injuries. If Satchel played even just 20 years later, man.. hell, 10 years later.

Also is important to note; being 40 years in 1946 is like being 65 today
