This is part two of a conservation process to stabilize what is believed to be the oldest gravestone in the United States. The stone is located on Jamestown Island in Virginia. In this short film, Jonathan Appell, a conservator of monuments, works on conserving and stabilizing the "knight's tomb" in the Memorial Church. The tombstone likely belonged to Sir George Yeardley, an early Jamestown leader, who was buried in the town in 1627. The tomb had been moved from it's original location at sometime in the colonial period, and then rediscovered in the early 20th century when the church was rebuilt. The link to part one of this process is listed below.

What a wonderful job to have...would give an "arm and a leg" to have such giftedness; thank you so much for taking the time to show this to all of us and keep us abreast of the latest developments. Will it be possible to come up with some sort of idea on the missing metal parts, how they might have been portrayed on the stone? Again, thank you so much for the hard work, it's very exciting!!

I'm related to Myles Standish of the 1620 Mayflower, his first wife died in January 1621 and is buried in Plymouth, Mass. Myles then moved to Duxbury, Mass. where he remarried and hence his line down through the ages.

"The tombstone likely belonged to Sir George Yeardley, an early Jamestown leader, who was buried in the town in 1627." Likely? What led them to this conclusion? Either there's a name and date on it or there isn't. If there isn't, there is no point speculating about who it belonged to, it's just an old grave marker that could have been anybody's. Why was it moved from its original location and then forgotten, if it belonged to someone important? Why was it not only embedded in a concrete floor, but carefully set on a bed of bricks? Why were the metal inscriptions and images removed? Isn't anyone curious about any of this?

How does a project like this get paid? Does JamesTown rely on tourists or does it get funded by the government? A church like this is really common here in the Netherlands, with similar gravestones/plaques and what not, of course this is quite a different setting as it's the oldest in America, but still.

Manny Calavera both. Look up the 'association for the preservation of Virginia antiquities' on encyclopediavirginia.org if your able. Jamestown is funded by not only this non-profit organization but also earn funding through tourists and donations.
