The Oldest Junk Boat Left In Hong Kong

Victoria Harbor is filled with boats of all shapes and sizes. However, there’s one boat that has a particularly special relationship with Hong Kong. The Dukling is Hong Kong’s oldest authentic junk boat and it’s still going strong nearly 70 years later.
For Hong Kong’s Tanka people, living aboard their fishing vessels was common practice. Junk boats used to be a common sighting in Hong Kong’s waters but as the city modernised the junks began to disappear. Dukling itself sank in 2014 and its stories could have been lost to history forever. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Captain Ng and others, the Dukling was given a second chance.
The Dukling is now the only authentic Junk boat that is publicly accessible in Hong Kong. Visitors can enjoy a nostalgic ride in Victoria Harbor while gazing at the city’s glorious skyline.

@@panfarmld9664 "Junk" is just what the foreigners called the boat from the native word "Chuan", or possibly from portugese and dutch colonials who saw Javanese boats "Jong" and adopted that name to chinese ships which looked similar

When I was in the USN i had a junk boat built in Hong Kong for $42000 USD as in 1977 no one wanted one and boat builders were struggling to stay in business it was built of teak great construction, had an engine along I sailed it to the philippines where I was stationed I had a great time with it for a few years until i got out of the USN sold it to a fellow servicemember for 45,000 i always wonder what happened to it..great

I sailed on her when I was like 4-5. One of my first memories back in early 1990s was of my entire family puking over the side, including various aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Apparently I made it through just fine and the captain said I had 'sea legs' lol. I've since stuck to the Star Ferry instead of the junk!

Awesome! I mean these boats are so iconic. A shame there's only a few left and that this is the oldest one. And that there's only a few places that can repair/restore it as well.

I'm a wind sailor, on my sailboat right now. I was in Hong Kong in 1988. We hired a wupan to take us around Aberdeen(? ) Where the Haka 'boat' people lived. Along the shore there was at least a dozen wooden boats hauled up under construction or repairs. I'm happy I saw this. As a sailor I am a bit disappointed Dukling did tours only under power. (I would still go.) I think if there were some sailing days a lot of sailboat sailors from around the world, myself included, would travel to Hong Kong just for the chance to sail on a real junk working its real sails. The Chinese 'junk' is one of the most important vessels in history, had many innovations (like sealed compartments) the rest of the world didn't get to until the 20th Century. I'd love to help work the sails.

The junk introduced numerous innovations, including the sternpost rudder, watertight bulkheads, and the bilge pump. In fact, Ben Franklin mentions bulkheads, suggesting that a certain ship, since it would mostly be for cargo and not passengers, should be built with the compartments caulked shut "in the Chinese manner."

I was there in 1967 aboard the USS Monticello LSD 35, got it painted all the way to the water line, all woman did the painting for left over food and scrap metal. I seen many types of vessels such as the Dukling and families living on them.

I love those boats! My family owns a chinese junk boat commissioned and built in Hong Kong by the New Yuen Hing Shipyard in 1982. It is in immaculate condition and with its beautiful red sails, it truly is a sight to see in the Caribbean.

A rare, historical piece of Junk, (excuse the pun), that the sea gave back. I had many yachts in my lifetime but always coveted a junk or a Madagascar D how. This Junk should be sailed and treasured as a Hong Kong

Wooden boats can absorb shocks from thebsra better. I have been travelling to Pulau Ketam using their modern fibre glass boats and you can feel the micro shocks of the sea when it traverse across the Sea. One day a keelong owner offer to send us back using his personal wooden fishing boat. It was slim, slender and long. The ride wad comfortable like a limousine. It ran smooth and wiggle around like a sports car. Definitely the boat builders have refine the art of making boats all these years. Neverthess its a dying trade making wooden boats in Malaysia.

I would love to see this boat tour other countries. Especially since the current status of China vs the West. But alas I know it would cost too much, even if it toured local Asian countries. Still... It would be nice to see a piece of this culture stay alive if you know what I mean.

The hull was not designed for those sorts of stunts. At 2.20 in the video there is a glimpse of the engine. I can tell you it is a Gardner 6LW. A medium speed diesel engine with 100hp. Like the Duk Ling a classic design and fit for the purpose. No hot rods necessary.

It's amazing how the government in HK doesn't seem to care about keeping these things alive. This is an iconic ship, people look for it when they are overlooking the harbor. I remember seeing it a couple years ago...if anything they should add more of them.

It’s a little confusing because he does say Hakka verbally but it is true that the Tanka people are now referred to as 水上人, so I’m wondering if he misspoke.

@@Seatux Not just that. At 1:03 he said in Cantonese "...us fishers are not very cultured people. We don't call ourselves Tanka." The translator somehow turn that into "...our fishing communities generally were not culturally inclined to...."

4:56 What the person said was "but there was a 70% chance of the ship breaking (from the recovery process). Subtitle said "but 70% of the Dukling was damaged." This is just completely off. I was barely paying attention to the subtitles during lunch and I already found two glaring mistakes. I wonder if the other videos are this bad.
