I really have enjoyed this anime so far and it did so much right that I wanted to make a quick video on it. It's streaming on crunchyroll right now if you wanted to check it out!

I’ve read Hamajiaki’s interview in 2019 about her first book of Bochhi the Rock. She mentioned that she only had two interests: comics and bands. But she only listened to bands not playing any kind of instruments , so to draw Bocchi the Rock, she even learned how to play bass and drums and of course sought advice from some friends being in bands.

Not only did it get musicians right, it got social anxiety right in a way most media fails to do, It's pretty telling how a lot of people think it's extremely exaggerated. It's not. How it's depicted is often pretty close to what it actually feels like. That scene where Bocchi paces in front of the entrance to the club for 10 minutes trying to work up the courage to go in for example really hit home.

yeah i learned that the hard way when i started playing jazz in the conservatory. from playing alone in my bedroom ( everything with my ear too ) to suddenly having to read chord chart and sight read sheet music all while keeping in mind that you can't keep your head buried in the sheet as you have to do interplaying ( response, quote, phrase exchange during solo etc ) and basicaly really play "with" the other musician. i mean i can just go into robot mode and do some walking bass line but without interplaying, you are no better than a backing track.

I highly recommend BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Its a really good coming of age story focused on a young guitarist finding his love of music and being in a band. A thematic predecessor to BOCCHI in how accurate it feels to actually make music. It also has one of the best dubs I've ever heard. Completely dubbing and altering the lyrics of the songs in the anime, so that they actually sound good to English speaking ears.

100% true. And on my side I actually can recommend reading the manga after that because it picks up even more typical things for young musicians such as “too drunk to play the full gig”, the feeling of “predetermine” for some events (like story of Koyuki buying a Fender Mustang) and troubles understanding the differences between “want” and “need” for the band

The part in your lie in April where you stop hearing the music and only see the notes is way to real for me. When I played Violin I had this problem where you could only play the piece as it was "intended" and it took away the soul of the musical pieces.

Ah... literally fixing this right now... After slacking on my piano practice without the metronome for 9-years, I decided to go complete opposite to mechanically perfect my single hand techniques. But only now do I realize it completely separated my musicality when joining both hands together, where fast passages will kick me into panic mode, and one hand will dominate the speed and throw the other hand into the fire. Not saying the metronome way was completely bad; it certainly helped in other crutches, but classical is a very sublime and fluid conjunction of sounds. Best wishes to finding your own happy way to practice.

I saw this a lot in school choirs. Loads of technically brilliant singers with tons of training and no soul. When I ran auditions for our old a cappella group, the rule was that you had to do your sight reading and all, but you also had to sing one song you just genuinely like. I turned down some amazingly technical singers in favor of the goofballs who just owned their Elvis impression or whatever. (That's a real story. Great guy, left us for musical theater but usually reserved us tickets.)

The Band in the anime is even a parody/slash inspired by the J-Rock Band Asian Kung Fu Generation, who sung the OPs of many of the big animes of the 2000s. It's pretty obvious considering that the girls share the last name with the members of that band with the same positions (the Yamada of both bands are the Bassist for example) except for Bocchi kinda, it's the same surname just read differently.

Apart from Yui learning guitar in like 3 weeks, I also think K-ON gets it right. Both two different scenarios, but we also see Yui express herself through learning an instrument. Also, Hibike Euphonium. Yes that's a concert band scenario, but it just about nails it. The story & the quality of the animation (including playing the instruments) is so finessed. Then there's just Beck, which is a whole other level. I think Bocchi the Rock is extremely accurate but it's also a very specific scenario, as is Hibike and K-ON.

I agree with euphonium, im a bari player so that solo got me jumping in my room. However fingerings for k-on were less accurate. On yuis solo at the start of season 2 her fingering was off for the first chord (Bb7). Her pointer should have been on the low e string. Bochii also incorporated more techniques and tech like drum setup mics, real mic models, effect pedals, and animated bends and quick riffs. Also don't forget about the slide solo. Those are things k-on lacked. Also, I see you do percussion, look at kids on the slope and the drum animation will be way too eye candy.

I've rated all the other music animes I've seen, and a lot of them lost points for having a beginner guitarist become pro in like 3 months, or them failing during rehearsals but somehow nailing a solo on stage and such like....that doesn't happen. So far, I do really appreciate that they gave Bocchi decent time to learn guitar, and a lot of things I've seen in the show are things I've experienced or what seem normal among musicians. I've found myself STRONGLY relating to this anime in regards to both Bocchi's anxiety and the music aspects. Since I'd heard Joe Pass' record "Meditation" when I was 13, I've been OBSESSED with becoming a Jazz guitarist. I'm 18 now, and I'd call myself decent, but when I tried to join a band for the first time recently my nerves hung up on me so badly I left the audition after strumming a single chord. My new goal is to join a Jazz band by next year, and this anime is really inspiring me to practice and to seek real experience.

Good luck! Sorry if this is stuff you already know but... if you can, find a big band, I'm a bit biased having played in big bands since I was in 9th grade but it's a great way to learn some history and get the language figured out before branching out into combos. Working with a director also makes a huge difference. Even if you aren't going to uni for music, schools with jazz programs likely will let people from outside the program audition for extra curricular big bands, also look for community out reach bands, it's usually pay to play model but likely worth while. I'm super excited for you, I remember how much fun that time in my musical journey was so I wish you all the best!

Hi, senior in university here-studying jazz guitar. If you're looking for safe spaces to play, but still getting a good experience, community college jazz combos/bands are a really great resource to check out. Even playing for ensembles such as jazz choirs can be valuable experience and networking (some of my gig work involved working for singers and it's generally quite low stress and pays okay). You've got plenty of time ahead of you to work out your chops and confidence so don't be too down on yourself. It goes without saying but finding a mentor in the jazz world can do wonders too-can be a teacher/professor/more experienced player and they can maybe even get you rolling out to some jam sessions or whatnot.

This is easily the best SOL anime of this season if not the year. I love every single thing about it and the music is fire!! Too bad it came out in the heaviest season where there are so many big names just as you mentioned, but this still turned into my top 5 shows of this season despite that. And the fact that it comes out late at night in my timezone is a big plus because I always cool down my brain by watching this show before going to bed (after SpyxFamily which is also a light-hearted show).

As a band nerd I definitely need to watch this anime, but it's a bit extreme to call it the only anime to get music right. My personal favorite, sound euphonium, really nails the emotional aspect of being in a concert band, as well as how each musician is on their own journey with their own complicated motivations while still being part of a collective whole. If you haven't seen it, it's by kyoani and it's a certain must watch for anyone that likes music in my opinion. It is a bit slow, and I'd understand if someone wouldn't find it their thing, but it's certainly a worthwhile journey.

As some other commenters described, BECK is a very gritty, very adult, and almost dragging in story-pacing narrative of what it feels like when young adults enter the band INDUSTRY with no money, sparse connection and support. Bocchi OTOH is more about high schoolers doing school-scale performances and using individual recording to reach online audiences. Just very era, different career approaches, and technology differences.

BTR is amazing tbh and probably one of my favorite music animes of all time. I know that Given is very drama and romance focused, but i feel that it also deserves a special mention somewhere. It's the only music anime that has perfectly nailed emotional expression through music and episode 9 is honestly a work of art. It also perfectly represents the different dangers and complexities that come with non-platonic relationships in bands and honestly handles it really well. It's definitely a heavier watch than BTR but it also has a lot of feel-good and slice of life moments that are to die for.

It has show bands, aka the one part where they act as a marchinig band, and have concert band competitions for Japan down very well. Their concert band competitions are very competitive, and their marching bands are also very competitive. However you are right, this anime does get the smaller ensemble bands down to a T.

Playing in a band really is hard especially for me, I only have 2 years of experience and I used to play by myself all the time since then, I don't even have someone to sing along whenever I play then my classmates built a band and made me their rhythm guitarist then we played on December 9 last year at our school and my social anxiety attacked when I saw the crowd watching, I don't even know the feeling of playing a guitar on front of someone I don't know. Every moment got me teared up especially when I felt the fun and thrill when I nailed the first song, I thought I'm gonna do something bad that will ruin our performance but I didn't, however, I made a lot of mistakes since I'm not familiar with some of the chords I play since I'm used to play with a cheap acoustic guitar with no truss rod, means I can't play any barre chords well since my guitar only plays on high action. Everything went well since then and now we plan to play in every event in our school and the higher ups agreed as well since our band did well that day. That's all XD.

Bocchi is awesome. They take jokes and art over the top it's hillarious. Also when she learned the guitar the first two chords she played made me wheeze. It was so relateable Am and Em. It's awesome. Also the cast is hillarious. Ogh and the Chords when they perform nailed it. Probably the only show ever which got it right. And theres so many details, as you mentioned the interface but theres so much more. For example from that drunken one. The've drawn her smartphone display cracked, because she's always drunk and on many parties. It's so rich in many details. I started playing for the same reasons, to get out and meet people. And it was the best decision I've ever made. Through music I've found true friends. I'am playing in three bands. One church band, one jazz band and a mix friend band with tons of people. Playing music with other people is a great way to get out and connect also it's fulfilling a part of me which was empty my whole life. Since then I've grown as a person found many friends for which I can gladly die on a hill and my whole life benefited from it. 10/10 can recommend

@@GervasiusMC wanting to not be anxious isn't the same as not being anxious. There are lots of anime nowadays that are having these kinds of characters and trying to give these messages. You didn't see this decades ago. The rest should be obvious, people were more healthy and normal back then. People being anxious wasn't so large and sweeping of an issue that it had to be addressed in multiple anime. Now it is. The same is true in western media. Art of a society reflects said society at the time. Older media showed more confident people in a more confident age. Now, West and East, people are anxious and not very confident. Have lots of mental health issues and no longer know how to interact with people. Meme culture shows this, movies show this and yes, anime like this show it to. Who would this anime be for if it wasn't an issue? Thus it is an issue for the anime to serve any purpose.
