If you're new to the channel I use the pinned comment to get any extra info across I might need to, as well as links to any upgrades to the build I might feature in a future video. Making the things I show in the video: The builds are all pretty straightforward to make, even if you just use 3mm magnets. Put it this way, all my examples in the video were made with blocks with all 3mm magnets, before I stuck 6mm ones in the bottom. Pausing the video will give you a good idea of how each one is built, so I thought I'd use this space to offer some tips on how to best build things so they're stable! When you're making things with these blocks, it's important to bear physics in mind. If you have bits sticking out, having a sloped section made of bricks and stairs supporting it will let you stretch that bit out further, and will also look more realistic more often than not. If you use 6mm magnets, either on the south poles or on a few blocks, you'll be able to stretch out these bridges further. Same thing goes for pillars and columns at the bottom, making some 'feet' from blocks and stairs on each side of the pillar can steady the piece dramatically. Generally speaking I found I only needed to add features like this where it might be expected for a structure to have supports anyway. Stone wall magnet hiding: So, in the cottage video I showed how to magnetise floor and wall tiles to connect WAY more easily, and I mentioned I would show how to hide the magnets away for when you want to use them stacked up. Essentially the method I used was the same as I show on these blocks, I used a hot glue gun nozzle to heat up the magnet and push it a little further in and get some space to fit the miliput. Again though, doing that is totally optional. Paint the magnets with tan-grey mixed with mod podge and they'll camouflage pretty well anyway.

This showed up in my recommendations, and I'm so glad I checked it out. This looks like a great way for a DM like myself to build sets using easy to store and easy to assemble parts. I can also imagine how modular this could be, adding magnets to the base of tree props for outdoor scenes or stalagmites and stalactites for caves.

ok i REALLY like the idea of modular prefab sections that you can build WHATEVER you want. and because of this you earned a Sub! .......now i just need to make futuristic versions........ya

You can also use dollar store foam core, if you don't have a hotwire table for milling one inch cubes. 5 layers of 1 inch square pieces foamcore should bring you to the desired thickness and can be textured much like BMC's square pillars. Stairs are admittedly more fiddly to make using this method, but still manageable.

Have you considered putting rectangular magnets in the bottom corners of blocks instead of disk magnets in the middle? For example, for a 3x3 tile, you could use 4 rectangular magnets alternating up/down. This could cut the number of magnets in half.

moss would be great to add to make mossy brick blocks. just add a tiny bit here and there in the groves.......just hope the magnets can handle that extra tiny amount of weight. the work is great.

I really liked the tutorial. I'll probably make some for an upcoming D&D campaign! Small note, the rollers of greenstuffworld work really well for greenstuff, miliputt etc. Shifting Lands(the same brand as the guider for your hotwire tool) also makes texture rollers specifically for foam.

Cosplayers have a trick. Score the foam like you were doing with the knife, but take a heat gun to the scoring. It'll widen up on its own so you don't have to individually widen the cuts with a pen. It'll save you a lot of time.

Hmm. If you're going to be making a bunch of them, I think you might be able to make a tool for making them. Make one, then get a negative impression of it by capturing each face with a bunch of high-temp epoxy or the like. Something that's made to be heated. You can then heat up the "negative" in a toaster oven (or even normal oven if you don't have, I guess) up to a point where it will slightly melt/deform the foam. Then push each side of the cube into the negative, melting in the impression. Would be super speedy to make a bunch of cubes when you're used to it. Plus, you could probably put the magnets in BEFORE the impression through a little slit, glue it closed, then do the impression, and as long as the glue is a bit flexible, the seam should be invisible. The tool shouldn't get hot enough that it can demagnetize the magnet, plus foam is usually a good insulator, so it shouldn't even feel it. Just a thought, though.

What if you partnered with someone who had some machining/CNC skills and make kind of like a 4-way clamp with deep brick texture on each clamping surface. Then you could just pop in the block, and tighten in the 4 sides and it'll imprint the texture into the foam. Take the block out and turn it on the side and just do 2 clamps to do the top and bottom. That'll help you crank hundreds of these things out in a fraction of the time.

i like to use sharpie on xps foam as the sharpie melts away at the foam giving it nice grooves
