Also interestingly, the last quote “hail…” mirrors what the witches called Macbeth “Hail King to be…” etc to foreshadow that further chaos and destruction could occur that may result in fleance being crowned.

“Most sacrilegious murder hath broke ope The lord’s anointed temple” -Act 2, Scene 3 Theme of ambition divine right of kings. Doesn’t have ambition which is good in Shakespeare’s time as it means he wouldn’t want to rise above his social position. Horrified someone would have ambition to kill the king. Alliteration emphasizes that what he’s seen is unspeakable of. Horrifying. His body is referred to as a “temple” to reinforce the holiness of Duncan’s reign. “O nation miserable, With an untitled tyrant” -Act 4, Scene 3 Theme of kingship Country is powerful when the right leader is in power (chosen by god). When the wrong person is in power it leads to the ruin of the country. Almost at war with itself. Great chain of being. Personification of “nation miserable” to show that Scotland is crushed under the weight of the wrong king. “all my pretty chickens… At one fell swoop?” -Act 4, Scene 3 Theme of ambition. Metaphor pretty chickens. Shows they’re vulnerable, innocent. He can’t even put up a fair fight. Evil. Superstition. The view that being around or listening to Witches could turn you into a evil person. “From his mother’s womb untimely ripped” -Act 5, Scene 8 Theme of supernatural Declarative sentence. Illustrating to Macbeth hat his time is done. He’s going to die. Macduff is the key character that restores the natural order. Witches had deliberately talked in half truths. He should have never trusted them. Macduff’s distrust of the supernatural reflects the Jacobean distrust of witches. “The usurper’s cursed head.. Hail, King of Scotland!” -Act 5, Scene 8 Theme of ambition Reinforces how ambition can be corrupting. Divine Right if Kings is respected by Macduff. Gives crown back showing he has no ambition and he wants to restore natural order. Illustrated through the exclamatory sentence as well as the noun “usurped”. Disgusted.

Hi. I'm a professional actor and will be auditioning for Macduff soon. In deciding to refresh my memory I stumbled upon this video. I must say it is excellent. While I'm aware it is intended for students, your concise, thorough and articulate analysis of the language and meanings is very helpful to anyone interested. I just wanted to say thank you.
