My brother works for the Dallas Coroners Office and he's told us all multiple times (paraphrasing)..."Your tire and your rim are worth less than your life. If you get a flat on a highway, drive off it before changing it!" He's had to work multiple scenes where someone was simply trying to change their tire along the highway but ended up losing their life. Lose the tire and the rim instead of your life!!

In some states there are time limits on how long you can stop at. Rest stops. This is because people living out of their cars and trucks having camping out in the rest stops. And those states you will not be encouraged to sleep there. But if you stop in the middle of the night and catch a few hours sleep That's what the rest stops are for.

Ok I'm an ER nurse and just want to put my two cents in by saying park/sleep at a hospital. There's always a family member sleeping in a car in the parking lot vs the chairs in the rooms so it's not out of the ordinary to see people sleeping in their cars lol. Security regularly patrols and is used to it. There's also cameras on the parking lots at all times and emergency call buttons every few light posts. My hospital is right off of an interstate and we often have truckers sleep there too 😊

That's not always an option. Many hospitals security will knock on your window and wake you up and tell you to leave. Might be okay at your hospital but at the many I've been to on the West coast it is not okay for you to sleep there.

When I was working in hospital before I retired I was paying hundreds of pounds a year paid to the hospital parking company. They kept putting the price up and it was taken direct from my wages before I got it. That was only for duty times. Patient have to pay to be there after 20 minutes at £1.65 per hour. It is a scam as the hospital get a small amount and the Board members are directors of the parking company and get directors fees .😊

You could learn a lot from being "homeless" you should try it. 👍 That said, most hospjtals make you pay to park, but this is a great idea....then, go visit someone inside, make them smile, use their shower. I got harrassed by a cop for parking at a rest area in NJ. I was the only one at the stop, I had not been there 5 mins and was sitting upright when he pulled in and asked me what I was doing so I said I am resting. Then he says its not a campsite and starts asking over and over if I have a gun saying things like " it is dangerous around here how do you protect yourself?" Finally he tells me I have to leave so I say "okay, I thought I was too tired to drive but if you want me on the road I guess I will go." Then he says "never mind, you can take a nap here if you need to." If I had admitted to having a gun I may have done 2 years, New Jersey is insane.

Please, PLEASE, get yourself a high-viz, reflective safety vest, preferably the yellow/green one, for the next time you have a roadside emergency. Changing a tire is hazardous enough on the side of the road, but wearing dark colors was even worse. A mesh safety vest is inexpensive, packs down super small, and is literally a life-saver. You have such a nice rig and are doing so good. Please keep yourself safe so you can continue to fully enjoy life.

Instead of using up your water prepare a jug of 1/4 to 1/2 white vinegar to 1/2 to 3/4 water, whichever you prefer. You can clean off just about all dishes including pots and pans without even scrubbing. Barely rinse them off as the vinegar odor is light and will go away when dry. It kills bacteria too so you can wash down almost any thing, including any toilet set up.

There are a lot of states that phohibit "overnight parking" and/or have time limits like 3-4 hours. I find this is more common in the eastern half of the USA. Some states have Truck only rest areas and few made for cars. It's getting harder to find rest areas. You can sleep in . They're making it impossible to live in your vehicle unless you do it stealthily, which means parking in the most dangerous locations , living without things that would make your camping too obvious like ( generators, AC units, roof fans, solar panels, luggage racks, etc) . It's disgusting, because with the price of rent and homes now days, I considered doing car/van life as a way to save money, but the laws and parking regulations have ruined that option almost completely. Maintaining car/van life while also staying local to go to your job? Almost impossible.

I had my vehicle FULL as I was coming to Vegas from Utah for a 2 month show. I had a membership at the LVAC and the girl at the house I rented at told me that the homeowner told her that she gets the bathroom to her self. The homeowner insisted that I use the gym 1 mile from this house which is a HIGH CRIME AREA. No showers were allowed at that location because Maryland pkwy does not have any swimming pools and so I wandered around in the store looking at all the muscle building protein powders ( the last thing a violin player needs ) and then went back to my car and found that three of my windows were busted out including the rear passenger window and they got away with 350,000 in violins, accordions, ballroom dance dresses and shoes. That was the first time I listened to the homeowner which cost me 30 Grand in income and he told me for 3 2e3ks he would put plastic over the open windows... NEVER DID & EVERY DAY LIED TELLING ME HE WOULD TAKE ME TO MAKE A POLICE REPORT. NEVER DID. Then started stealing parts off my Suburban like the battery... & the 1st thing he told me was "THOSE TIRES BELONG ON MY TRUCK." In addition to: " No dont have your car towed to 5he dealer to get it fixed because he has a guy who does better job than the Chevy dealer" NEVER GAVE ME THE INFO. $79,000 SUBURBAN 90% covered in bird feces & tree sap. My feet broken by accident twice & his back adjustment crippled me. I am now completely handicapped and not even able to roll over in bed without EXCRUCIATING PAIN in addition to being in a wreck because he is constantly slamming his foot into the gas pedal without looking to see if there's a vehicle in front of us. And of course my neck is completely unable to hold my head without extreme muscle spasms and seizures. My days of walking 6 MI every single night and Hiking 100 miles a month or over. Getting my windows replaced was $1600 dollars.😢

just a tip for saving your water supply, get yourself a spray bottle and fill it with tap water wherever you can, travel center, even a fast food place, they usually don’t have an issue, also when shopping for supplies pick up a container of wipes, personally we prefer Clorox brand, they’re wetter and a bit soapy, you can wipe your dishes clean with the wipes, and rinse with the spray bottle of tap water, it saves your tank water, let’s face it, you don’t use a lot of dishes when you’re preparing your meal, so a spray bottle will last for a while, of course you can keep two bottles of tap water, you’ll have plenty for washing up your dishes, pots/pans and flatware, also great for rinsing your counter and cooking surfaces, we use the Clorox wipes for washing our hands then a quick spray of tap water to rinse, i was surprised how much use we get out of a decent size spray bottle

Something else I’ve learned and put into practice driving the Amish. On hot days when I need to run the A/C while sitting and waiting all day for workday to be over, I was told to always open the hood while running the engine while just sitting somewhere. Even to run a strong fan so that it blows thru the engine to keep the hot air produced by the running engine from being trapped around the engine. The high temp. Is not good for all the plastic sensors and components and can cause them to fail prematurely. I’ve had ignition coils go bad while just sitting idling in the heat. Not that that additional heat was the primary cause but could have very well been the catalyst which sent it over the edge into failure. I’ve also warped and intake from excess heat and so all I’m saying is, it’s a good idea to open the hood to allow heat to better escape, and if possible run a high powered fan so that it’s blowing thru the engine and removing said heat. Just a few thoughts that may help.

KOA varied $15- $65 depending on where you were. We managed two hotel stays for serious showers and rest. Tried a truck stop; too much noise and light (forgot to make window covers), We got a lot of those "are you homeless, or moving?" looks. (Moving) Also saw gas drop from 5.89 to 3.19. THAT was great!

When my hubby and I travel we do it mostly at night because there's less traffic except for semis and they don't bother us. We can avoid big city traffic slowdowns with all those folks going to/from work or the usual smaller business trucks. When we do stop at a rest area or larger one with services and restaurants we take turns going to the bathrooms so we never leave our vehicle unattended for thieves to target us. We try to park under lights too. When I go to the loo I take my mace if it's only a rest stop with no.people around. If you're only taking a nap then put a card in your driver's window that says " 30 minute nap. Please do not disturb." Cops will leave you alone.

Truck stops are better for bathroom stops unless it's midday or crowded at the rest stop; then, rest stops are ok.

I have been specifically told by cops that the best place to park is an empty parking lot by a busy road…directly under a street light. The people who cause trouble don’t want to get caught and tend to park in dark areas. Plus, parking under a light is an easy target to remember for cops patrolling the roads at night. If they check on you once, it will only be that one time so long as you don’t move your vehicle.

this guy is able to pull this off because he is very clever and creative and can put up with this. He is a survivor. Most people however that live in their vehicles are absolutely miserable and feel very alone and sad. This kind of life is not for everybody. It also looks incredibly challenging to go take a shit. What if you suddenly have to go and where do you go? What if you have to clean yourself up and no access to a shower. People also have cops banging on their window while they are half awake to move their car out of some parking lot. The whole thing is dangerous.

I agree although some have no choice. I lost everything in the pandemic and im being forced into the life until I can improve things. I dread it. I dont want to travel the country, I just need to work and a van is not suitable for it, not to mention what happens to all your possessions and otherwise normal life. I first got sucked in by the glamorous videos and then when it truly sinks in, how you are going to do it, a horror story emerges. Some people adapted well because they really wanted the life but yes for many, its sad, lonely and very awkward.

As A Fellow Van Camper, I've been living full-time in my minivan. There's different rules on rest area overnight parking from 4 hour limits to 8 hour limits. It is best to take note of all the signs as you enter the rest area. If there's security in the rest area, ask them if its okay for you to stay and how long you may stay or be prepared to get the knock as they do down yonder in central Florida. As for me, rest areas are my last option.

Rest areas vary a lot from state-to-state, here in California they usually have a soda machine and toilets and maybe a map of the area and a place to drain the dog, but nothing fancy and only sometimes place for picnicking. Also both Oregon and California have rules against camping in rest areas, they don't mind if you snooze for a while to get rid of sleepiness but if it looks like you're trying to spend the night you might get the knock.

I was in Big Sur area, Monterrey, CA and a state park that had primitive hike-in camping. I arrived very tired and about midnight. I paid for one night. I thought it a waste of time to hike in and camp so slept in the parking lot. It wasn't long and a big spotlight and two officers. I had to get out of the vehicle. Even though I'd paid she said "We get a lot of vagrants around here, you have to leave." They said where a tent-pad and electric camp site was for $32. I had hardly any money being a traveling musician. They followed me about 15 miles to this other camp. It was another State Park and once at my designated camp I was so tired at like 3AM I thought I'd just sleep in the car instead of pitching a tent, so I paid twice... school of hard knocks... I just don't understand why I can't sleep in my car as I'm not harming anyone. In the light of a rising sun I got out of my vehicle and on the ground at my feet where three of the most big beautiful pristine golden eagle feathers I keep to this day! I looked up and could tell the dwarfed pine above me had a perfect perching place. I knew the meaning of it all and felt the rising light gift glowing within me. Just once when sleeping in the parking lot of a city park in Duluth MN the officer said I had to leave but was nice to say that I could sleep in the local Walmart parking lot so I did that. After that when I traveled cross-country to sell my music I had a USA atlas that showed all the WalMart parking lots and saved tremendously on hotel costs. I cut to fit perfectly foam core that artists use to mount their art. You get it in white and it is two layers of durable thick paper and sandwiched in between is foam. Being white they reflected the rising sun heat and gave me privacy. To get air circulation I opened all four windows a crack and pulled back on the panels slightly.

Not to be a party pooper, but not all rest stops allow overnight or even extended stays. I too live in my car and have seen signs stating as low as 2 hour limits at rest stops as well as no overnight parking. Like you said, I don’t know that anyone is actually monitoring for this. When I was in doubt, I just ask the attendant (if there is one) and have been granted permission. No one has said no but with that said, I usually don’t push it if there is a sign limiting time, unless I am actually really tired and can’t find another spot and really need the sleep.

I have a squirrel friend right now that has filled all my shoes and boots with peanuts and hazelnuts. Now she is working on filling my garden tote. She comes in and out through a window in the kitchen. She lives outside but found out where the nuts were coming from and stashing them inside keeps them safe from being stolen by the other squirrels. She is a Douglas squirrel - a particularly delightful small territorial squirrel found in the Pacific NW. Don't tell her, but I just empty a shoe when I need to feed the squirrels. 😉 I enjoyed your video and subscribed.

I love unique stories about animals. I've heard a couple of times about squirrels that were kept inside homes that ran off burglars. They will literally tear strangers up. They know the regular family members that live there as safe, but any strangers that come to visit may have problems. They're as good as a watch dog, & much less expensive to maintain.

I have a suggestion, and I know you have probably already considered it, but have you looked into traveling nurse opportunities. My niece did for a year or so, was paid very (very) well, and went to Guam, Roswell, NM, FL and PA, plus other places that I can't remember!

Hi...I really enjoy your videos. I live in Vermont and there is NO overnight parking in rest areas. Yes, they have some amenities, and are nice for tourism, but that's about it here. I think it just must be different in other states. Safe travels!!

I've driven from coast to coast a few times and it is different for each state. I've also noticed more overnight parking out west.
