I'm currently working on a large project that will take me a couple weeks to complete. In the meantime, I decided to post a video of a project that I completely failed back in August of 2020 and talk about it. It was my first attempt at resin, and I ruined it by not reading the instructions fully.
It's a different format, but I hope you enjoy and are encouraged to try something new even if you might fail.

I spent a couple weeks between normal projects making a big flying fantasy whale flying through the clouds being hunted by a number of blimp sky pirates. It ws my pride and joy. Then I poured the resin. Now only my Patrons have ever seen the final result. You're a better man than me for uploading this (I just deleted all my footage in a fit of rage).

Don't worry mate. We have all messed up when started working with resin. On another note, I think you could put the entire project on a slightly bigger mold and pour a layer of resin all around it. This would seal the badly cured resin inside a well hardened layer of resin. I haven't tried it but theoretically it should work. Maybe this way you could salvage the project. 🤔🤔

Yeah - what he said! You should not have thrown that away - I could've saved it. I've been doing this modeling thing for a little over 42 years now. And you can get a resin hardener similar to the superglue hardener or accelerator. Just spray it on and let it cure. But if you've already thrown this away a long time ago just don't do it again - next time post a video and see what the peanut gallery has to say. You'd be surprised by how many ideas we all have together than can save you time, money and heart ache! Thanks for posting this any way.

Being able to “polish a turd” is such a huge skill to have as an artist. Learning how to correct a mistake or use it to enhance the piece is such a large and, I feel, untouched part of the creative process. Thank you for sharing this learning experience with us. Loved it.
@DeadKraken
@DeadKraken 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like, "polishing a turd" is about 80% of the whole artistic experience lol I draw comic books\graphic novels with traditional media for a living, and in all the phases required to finish a page I do little more than correct and cover the crap I did in the previous phase. I never re-do pages, so when an incident happens(like accidentally having a 3 day's work drowned in dirty ink water)I have to work around it. Unfortunately not all medias are as easy to manipulate, like in this case.

Man, this kind of thing happens, and I truly appreciate you showing it. I have recently started to do some projects myself, and seeing/being reminded that not always they are going to come out the way we wanted or expected is very important. As you said this also will be inspiring for some people not only by seeing that everyone makes mistakes, but it could be retried, but even for the project it self, the idea was simple yet elegant. I do like the way the boat was made, and the fish was interesting, I loved the green and blue mix, I think I turned out great. Keep sharing your projects, no matter what the end result is. We all love your work. I can't support you on Patreon but still think you would deserve it. Keep it up! ♥️♥️♥️

check every brands instructions, some are 50/50 by weight or volume, some are 60/40 or even 75/25, and it could be either weight or volume so you need to be sure what your mixing. if you're off by 10% or more your resin will fail.

Good to be so philosophical about a failure. Many YTers only show the very 'best of the best' and pass on a 'perfection or bust' vibe which is unrealistic. There is much to learn from failure. I always enjoy your videos!

This is why I like you as a builder. Most content creators would have never shown this. But it's a learning tool and something that we all now can see and appreciate. There's the old saying that you learn twice as much from one mistake then several successes. On a similar note, when it comes to inspiration. You're video on the train robbery diorama has made it's rounds through several 19th century railroad modeling communities. It's inspired a few other builders to take their own shot at a similar style diorama. There are at least two completed, and a third model builder is documenting his.

I was working on a large Star Trek starship model. It was a Saladin-class destroyer with an open shuttlebay interior and lighting system. I had painted it and applied the decals. These were custom-made decals from a producer who specifically makes custom work, and at the time they were an expensive investment. I then decided to spray the clear varnish over them to seal them in. I had thought I'd grabbed Testors Dullcote, but I had instead grabbed Light Sea Gray. I enveloped the model in a cloud of paint and by the time I realized it was paint and not clear varnish, I had turned it into what looked like a concrete statue. I was devestated and never touched it again.

I kind of like how this project came out. The resin spreading out at the bottom looks somewhat intentional, like you were trying to make a transition from the project to the surface it's resting on. But saying that, I also build with the old LEGO Bionicle and Hero Factory parts, and I tend to go with either a scraped/salvaged looking mech, a giant F-Off bug, or the main villain who just so happens to like spikes. Like really likes spikes. To an unhealthy amount, likes spikes.

Mistakes are the best teacher. To every craft, to every finalized pieced, there's a lot of time, effort, and hard work that's put into it. Crafts are not surface deep, they're expertly tuned over the progression of time. And to those self-taught projects, there is no greater teacher than failure. Thanks for showing the video. Not many diorama creators show the failures. In the meantime, if you chose to recreate this with resin and want to go for an ocean look, check out Thalasso Hobbyer's videos for examples on colors. They do massive sculp projects that usually always include resin.

This reminds me of the time I tried to make a bar top for a customer. It was over 300 dollars in oak top, and the wasted money in resin. Like you it NEVER cured and I had to waste over 500 dollars and start from scratch. I went with what I knew and just put several layers of polyurethane. The customer was awesome and she didn't mind. The clear top was my idea so when it failed it was on me lol. So she liked it either way. But I never forget it and have only dabbled in resin since. Such a shame, after seeing all the hard work you put into it. Mistakes happen, you just have to learn from them. Now I can't wait to see what you're working on now. You might have been able to salvage that by making a frame for it to sit in. Maybe, but I don't blame you for just saying, the hell with it and throwing it out.

I've failed a lot with resin too, I did learn to not use styrene to block off resin, if the resin cures properly it is nearly impossible to pull all the styrene off of it. I had chunks of styrene stuck to my model that I had to paint over. I now use clear acrylic sheets which is much easier to pull off the resin :)

I've just barley been getting into your videos but I think this is one of your best videos, not because it was good but because it showed how it isn't always perfect and it takes trial and error. These videos are just as important as if not more as important as the other amazing videos you put out. Thank you for putting out the reality and the potential of what can be.

Your little model boat is awesome. Too bad things went south at the end. But... well, hopefully your next piece will be awesome! ❤

Well the boat build was fun to watch at least. I also cracked up at the "my downfall" annotation. Cheers man.
