you are lucky to have good sand in your bunkers. We have wet hard packed bunkers at many courses in Asia.. Only option is to actually chip the ball out of the muck. Think baked mud for a surface or something slightly softer than concrete !

I have an excellent bunker shot, and although I visualize it differently, this video explains why it works. I imagine I am smacking the sand with my hand (instead of a club), hitting it hard enough to spray the sand all the way to the hole (that gives me the swing speed the video talks about). And I imagine hitting the sand so that I take a full handful of sand with the ball sitting on top (which is the same as the video talking about hitting 6" behind the ball). I'm so psyched for the snow to melt so I can try overlaying the instruction in this video on top of how I visualize it now.

Big fan of your content, love the stuff you put out. I go over with my young junior golfer son quite often. How much does the different types of sand texture impact this shot? Obviously some courses have really nice powdery sand, whereas some other courses have what feels like dirt, also when it rains, the sand texture changes, how does this influence how hard you swing and where you enter the sand or does it at all?

Jim Johnson Love your bunker instruction. My problem is distance. Greenside bunker with no green to work with is no problem. L/W will do the trick. Its when the pin goes further away 10 to 15 yds that I can't control. I've been using a s/w but can't control distance.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
You control distance out of the bunker like any other other shot; loft and speed. The only difference is where you hit the sand in relationship to the ball also makes a big difference. Practice consistently hitting the sand 4-6 inches before the ball and you'll be able to control your distance easily with loft and speed. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Excellent video. One thing that seems to be missing in bunker videos, though, is how MUCH sand to take behind the ball. Do we want to just skim the sand, or do we want to hit, say, 1/2" below the surface of the sand?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, it really just depends on that sand and the type of shot you're hitting. Take more sand and swing harder if you want the ball to roll out and less sand if you want to spin. It's something that takes practice to get the feel for it. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great tips - especially on the set up and the club head speed. Don't be scared to swing it. Does the consistency of the sand vary the distance to enter the sand behind the ball? These look like pretty fine and well groomed sand. What about washed out bunkers, wet sand, or very grainy sand that is a lot harder than this?

Any tips for drop kicking the ball (open clubface, hard swing, club hits sand first, slides right into back of ball and blades it straight into the side of the bunker)? Sometimes closing the face helps, but then you hit it too fat, obviously. I'm playing a 56* with 12 bounce. Do you recommend a lower bounce?

Most amateurs need 12 degrees or more of bounce in their sand wedges - especially for the fluffy sand seen at better courses like the TPC system of courses. Low bounce wedges dig too much.

Should the same swing thoughts be applied for a 60 yd wedge shot in terms of arms and hips/body but with two key differences - open blade and hitting well behind the body? In my wedge shots, my arms are asleep but lower body are driving the engine...in your vid, seems to be the opposite. Also, hinging early is being promoted, yes?

Fairway bunkers are similar to how you'd hit off grass since you're generally trying to get power on the ball and don't care as much about getting good loft. Look at the shots where he hit just behind the ball. He got normal fairway distance out of the club.

Hi Bill, you just do your best to get the club on it. Many times you'll have to blast it out to the side depending on where you are in relationship to the hole. Hi Clay, would this be the same as a lob shot swing, when I practice lob shots the technique feels more natural and I have no problem getting the ball up with a natural swing and a faster swing as well. Where as there are so many different videos and techniques on you tube on how to play a bunker shot etc and that's where I'm struggling trying all these techniques. Also are you focusing your eyes where you are wanting to thump the sand as that's what I do with a lob shot and don't have to think to much about it. Thanks.

So swing with less speed if you don’t want it go far? What if you only need the ball to go like 4 feet and stop quickly?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't ever advocate less speed out of a bunker. Four feet and stop quickly takes some serious skill and practice. You would have to hit closer to the ball with a wide open face. You'd need lots of spin which requires lots of speed. Hopefully you don't run into this situation too often. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

Hoi. Basically I like Clay's lessons and I also subscribed for a year to his training. But this bunker lessons does not convince me. Esp. all the movement with the body, the straightening of the right leg etc. are imho a big source for mishits. I started using Jason Day's way of playing out of the bunker about 2 months ago and it completely changed my bunker shot quality. I rarely mishit now and most times get rather close to the flag.

Thanks for the reply Clay. I’ve started playing again after an 18 year break from the game and I’m now enthusiastically trying to catch up on so many changes to the game. Unless I’m mistaken (highly likely) I always used to stand with an open stance and clubhead open and swing out to in to slide under the ball. What’s very odd is that it used to work for me but now doesn’t - hence the reason for watching the video. Watching the pros out of bunkers does amaze me and I was obviously thinking that I was now doing something wrong. By the way I subscribed to your channel a while back and you have helped me in many ways get back to playing golf. Cheers.

that tricked out golf cart looks like it's driven into the bunkers to hit bunker shots. Do you manage the distance of your bunker shots by adjusting the follow through? With the back swing staying the same with every shot?

You control the distance with the speed/length of the swing and the amount of loft you're using.

@@TopSpeedGolf Okay, that sounds standard. The reason I asked is I watched a video with Golf WIth Aimee where she said she always keeps her backswing the same, but thinks about the length of her follow through as her means of controlling distance with bunker shots. Perhaps that's just another means of controlling speed/length as you say. Moot point, in other words

How do you suddenly hit 6 inches in front of the ball? You haven't explained what you change in your swing to do that. What makes the club bottom out suddenly 6 inches sooner?

Great video but you forgot to explain the last part of the swing right after impact. It's not a normal golf swing as if you were on the fairway. The finish is how this shot is going to work right. Please explain that missing part where the rotation after impact is more circular and flatter. I may be exaggerating the concept with those words but the pros do it all the time. Thanks ....

The finish is a result of doing all the other things Clay talked about correctly.

What if the sand in the bunker is 1/4" deep? I keep running into crappy bunkers that are like hitting off the sidewalk.

Not all sand is like that.. At my club the sand is firm, dense and often wet. What now?

I can see that another viewer had the same comment. Most traps that the average player hits out of are not maintained with any depth of soft sand. I lost 4 strokes on my last round frustrated in the bunker! HELP please.
