Hi Ma'am, First of all a big thank you for giving all of us in one lecture really appreciate your efforts. Secondly I have one question about proper noun. Proper noun ending with s are singular (6:00) So which one of the following is correct? 1. The Smiths present their research 2. The Smiths presents their research. In my opinion the Smiths are the proper noun here ending with s so should be option 2, but as per the example #2 (2:31) option 1 is correct. Any comments please

Ma'am, I think 'None' could be singular or plural depending on the subject of the 'of phrase'😊
@winmacarvajalofficial
@winmacarvajalofficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hello! We look at the of phrase when we decide for fractions/percentages/quantifier lots, etc. Null kasi ang none (unlike those) so we can't apply the same plurality rule. Descriptively tho, acceptable naman. In fact, some researchers have studied the case of none as subjects and may natives pa rin naman who'd subscribe to that idea. Minority nga lang sila.

@@winmacarvajalofficial Prescriptively or descriptively when none is the subject, the verb is either singular or plural depending on what it is referring to. At one time, the verb that followed none was always singular. Now, the choice of the verb depends on the context. ❤️😘

@@winmacarvajalofficial "The pronoun "none" means not one, not any, or no persons or things. As an adverb, "none" means not at all or to no extent. There's a common misconception that "none" can only be singular, but this has never been true. When "none" is the subject of a clause and refers to members of a group, it can be used with either a singular verb ("None is") or a plural verb ("None are"). "None" must be followed by a singular verb only when it means "not part of a whole," as in "None of it is mine." (Nordquist, 2019).
@winmacarvajalofficial
@winmacarvajalofficial 3 жыл бұрын
@@prinzjohnalfaro7438 That 'none' is always singular is a prescriptive rule. I say this with utmost confidence. And I say this with utmost confidence because credible and time respected authorities like Celce-Murcia, Larsen-Freeman, et al., and traditional grammars would state that. (traditional=conventional=prescriptive) Then again, as I said, studies have acknowledged the descriptive practice of English speakers to treat none as plural. Which is why I wouldn't disagree with Nordquist either. I do acknowledge this descriptive variation, too. I guess, there's not much to argue about? I mean, are we here to prove it's prescriptive or descriptive? Or is it more practical to know what's prescribed and recognize descriptive variations (as we normally do)? I rest my case.
