Kente is regarded as a fabric for the royals and is popular worldwide. There are varying accounts of its origin and so the Yenkassa team decided to go to the source, Bonwire, and track down the one true origin story/history of Kente. Listen to Chief Kente Designer, Akwesi Kwarteng, narrate the true story of the Kente fabric as passed down from his ancestors. Akwesi Kwarteng is a direct descendant of the man who designed (added patterns) the Kente cloth.

Nature teaches us a lot. Thanks for the inspiration from the spider, that moved Opoku and Kwakye to bring out the kente masterpiece.

Are we, like, missing whole sections of him talking? There is a part where there is no subtitles and he literally says the english word 'Red'. There is just large streches of him speaking.........and there are just no subtitles at all.

This history is different from what I read. According to what I read, they learnt how to make kente from the Ewes... the ewes and gas brought kente to Ghana. Any way thanks for the enlightenment😊

Gas dont have any claim to kente weaving. The part of ewe land that weaves kente have ancestors from ashanti. We got the culture from ashantis. There is no ewe word for this cloth. We have to stop claiming others culture.

With all due respect are we not going to touch on the influence the Ewe culture and weavers had and still have? What is the saying again "Until the lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter"
@yenkassa
@yenkassa Жыл бұрын
Yes, that story is in the works. I hear there is a debate on the origins of the name Kente and the cloth in general… btw, Ewe kente weaving is slowly becoming a thing of the past because of the current trend of supplying Kumasi with the Asante Kente.

Its was one Asante king who sent some number of kyekyen cloth makers to the ewe people in somewhere to learn how to weave the kente cloth. The kente cloth actually originate from the ewe people of togo
