On February 5, 1945, in the depths of a Norwegian fjord, U-Boat U-864, helmed by Captain Ralf-Reimar Wolfram, thundered out of Bergen on a mission that could shift the tides of World War 2. With the Axis powers teetering on the brink of collapse, the Nazi war machine was banking on U-864 to deliver a cache of cutting-edge military tech promising to supercharge the Japanese war effort.
Packed with the blueprints and parts for Jumo 004 turbojets, the makings of a next-gen Japanese jet fighter, and the critical components of V-2 ballistic missiles, not to mention a contingent of top-tier engineers versed in this tech, U-864 was a steel-clad lifeline for the Axis.
However, Captain Wolfram and his crew soon steamed blind into a lethal trap. Having cracked the Enigma’s secrets, the British had U-864 in their crosshairs. HMS Venturer, a top-of-the-line British submarine, was on the prowl, tasked with a single objective: to hunt down U-864 and consign her and her secrets to the abyss.
As Wolfram plunged into the frigid waters, the weight of the entire conflict bore down on his shoulders. HMS Venturer’s ASDIC sonar pinged through the depths in a desperate bid to find its target, gearing up for an unprecedented duel beneath the waves. History was about to witness the only underwater submarine clash ever recorded…

It was a bearing on one of the prop shafts that failed necessitating them to return to the bunkers & giving away their position. The Mercury found was from 40 tonnes she was carrying destined for Japan. It was also witnessed by one young boy ashore. He heard the explosion & seen the stern of U864 rise from the water.

This would make an excellent movie. This is the first time I heard of this battle. The intrique, the desparation, the patriotism, the tension in the plot, this could be a box office hit.

@@lynby6231 Yeah, the British got pretty upset with Hollywood when they made the movie U-571 starring Matthew McConaughey. The movie said it was an American sub that recovered the Nazi's Enigma machine when it was a British sub that did that.

There’s a better more descriptive video on KZfaq than this, with a non robotic voice about cot Laundrr’s exploits, worth watching if you can find it.👍( it was called “ only underwater submarine battle in history” I think)

Could you imagine if Germany figured out nuclear weapons before the US did? They would’ve had ICBMs in 1945.
@AnthonyDoesYouTube
@AnthonyDoesYouTube 3 ай бұрын
They already had ICBMs, the V2s. I think you mean nuclear warheads... (it's more likely however that Germany would have used a truck to carry the bomb since the warhead far exceeded the payload weight capacity of the V2 platform and literally every German bomber at the time

It's a nightmare fantasy, but only a fantasy. Realistically, only the US could afford the expense involved. The amount of electrical and material resources consumed was ridiculous for the time.

Also I think that some scientists sabotaged their work slightly knowing full well that Germany should never be allowed to have such weapons.. Cannot remember if I read this in Beevor’s book Berlin or it came to light sometime after..

So you’re trying to tell me that the sub on sub attack scenes in The Hunt for Red October weren’t real?
@MichaelWilliams-mo1vv
@MichaelWilliams-mo1vv 2 ай бұрын
That type of thing in Red October is certainly possible. But up until the end of WWii Sonar wasn't that sophisticated. However it improved markedly post war and then you started to have submarines developed specifically to hunt and destroy other submarines. So in this case with HMS Venturer it was an amazing feat.
