Welcome to a story within a story in this funny short story by Hector Hugh "Saki" Munro. "The Open Window" is probably Saki's most well-known work, a humorous, tongue-in-cheek short story by one of the greatest short story writers of all time.
Saki was a British writer and journalist who lived from 1870 to 1916 and is known for his witty and sometimes macabre stories, very often satirizing "Edwardian society" and culture.
He wrote over 200 stories and 14 novels, as well as numerous essays, plays, and children's books.

I hope you enjoy listening to "The Open Window", a story that shows Saki's fine irony, and his "trademark" twist ending.

Always loved his stuff. Although I didn't know the story at the time I frequently, during childhood, asked Sredni Vashtar to "do one thing for me". Like all gods he did. Like HPL he's problematic in some ways. Unfortunately for us he never got to finish his journey. He's still on the train with Reginald. This is perhaps fortunate for him . We know where the train was going. He would have been appalled by a flatulent little lower middle class scribblers.😊 Who preferred dumb blonds to handsome young men who lounge around woodland clearings.

I have to be honest and say that I had to google "Sredni Vashtar". Fascinating. While I love short stories, I only stumbled over Munro's work very recently, and so far only read a couple of his stories. What a shame, I know ;) But... hey... so much to explore. Can't wait to read more of them. Murno was indeed a fascinating person. I read up on him after I discovered his work. And yes, in some regards, he's indeed "problematic". The way I see it, though, the "problematic ones" often are the most fascinating. They force us to face our own biases and be honest with ourselves. And other than that, reading these old stories perfectly demonstrates how we, as a society, develop and change. Where we go right. Where we go wrong. We can see patterns, and to an extent also can predict the future

@@iReadBooks it is interesting. Difficult subject...we have to be allowed to say controversial things, to say important things. My own "the most dangerous boy in the world meets our brothers and sisters" is an attempt to run with 'the hate thing' - without being horrible to any one group of 'the humans' lol. In some regards a pastiche of hpl. Or some of his stuff. Prepare to meet young Clive. And his new freinds. "The meek shall....."

"We have to be allowed to say controversial things, to say important things" is probably the most on-point comment on the topic ever. I couldn't agree more.

@@iReadBooks lol...thanks that a big compliment. Meant to say - if you liked "Oscar.." you might like "the little sister of eternal devotion" - a kind of companion piece. The recurring nature of evil 😈...as opposed to 'run of the mill' human vice and weakness. Also a glimpse of the world lord Henry would have made.....
