Your death will sit many empty targets. - In death, all potential, all goals or opportunities, that could have been, will never be. -A metaphor is that of the potential that comes with a loaded gun. An action that just needs someone to pull the trigger. This could be any achievement that might be done in one's life. But in death, everything that could have been achieved is gone. -The more notable relation of war and shootings, one stands as the attacker, another as the defender. Both live by the gun. When one kills the other, all those that could have been shot by the dead will not be shot, empty targets. But with replacing targets with poems, it grows in meaning to all the emotions that could have been had by the dead, be they home or battle, will never come to be. Live your life. Take actions toward what you feel right. Face the evils of this world, with a loaded gun if you must. But stand ready. For in death, the actions not taken will remain. And the evils not faced, will sit unscathed.

Does make sense. A gun, as an instrument of death, takes life away. A midwife, by that same analogy, assists in bringing about birth.

@De nieva De Nieva I literally know smack about midwifery. Or gunsmith-ing. See, writers have to know a ton of random stuff that they're writing about, even if that research doesn't make it to centre stage of the page. And usually, it can't. Because that knowledge is so specialised that it'll be lost on the layman reader. (Writers have to know it to understand the very basics of how something works, so they don't make a very fatal error in using that device in whichever way they have contrived to do so.) The poet just wanted you to get the gist of it, so they used a basic metaphor. Confusing the reader is the opposite of what a writer endeavours to do with their writing. And writing as simply as possible is crazy hard. In this case, a midwife is used as a metonymic/synecdochical metaphor. As in, a part representing the whole. Like a sceptre or crown for the king or monarchy.

@Temmie Mew I really love "It's words and the spaces for words." Because that one just contains all the answers. And also, "It's saying 'I love you' into your hand and then touching someone's ear." I think that sounds very soft and thoughtful.

Lesson : Not everything has an opposite

to me it means that your death will have no meaning. Because poems are supposed to express feeling and an empty poem is a poem that means nothing. So, the line is saying that your death will endure no meaning. Many people who shoot a gun have no consideration for the people it's pointed at

I think that the line "The opposite of a gun is wherever you point it." is a joke and the kids wanted an answer, so in disappointment they address to him to not write that on board(consider it a lame reply) and then saying "Your death will sit through many empty poems" just like his answer did not provided a meaning to them. --maybe I'm wrong.

I think it's the opposite sentence from where they began, which was the sentence, "my life had stood a loaded gun," which, when you take the opposite of each word, you get "your death will sit through many empty poems." The students told him to write the word "poem" instead of his longer explanation.

Stop saying "gun" violence! All violence are human violence. Murderer will murder for no doubt, no gun or not. If they are smart, killing with car is better, could get more kills than shooting. Just drive to nearest show, festival, or where a bunch of folks doing exercise, speed up straight right there! Mission complete. The car win! The gun lost! Anyway why don't people call street fights "fist violence"? or "knife violence"or "bat violence"? Why don't you call robbery "hand violence"? The word "gun violence" is very intentional

This verse is really deep. The opposite of a gun is whatever it's pointed at not only literaly, but also because it's the thing that the gun will destroy. It's the other side of the "battle", the "enemy". The gun it's the opposite of the maintenance of its existence. Great poem, great video.
