Surprised you didn't mention Man-Thing's cameo in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing #46. When Swamp Thing meets the Parliament of Trees for the first time, they show him some of the Swamp Elementals of other worlds, and Man-Thing (and The Heap, who was the grandaddy of all swamp monsters) are shown in one panel.

Fun Fact: Both Man-Thing and Swamp-Thing were actually based on another comic book swamp monster, The Heap from Air Boy comics. (Formerly known as Air Fighter comics.)

Theodore Sturgeon also wrote a story called IT about a similar creature formed around the skeleton of a man but I don't know if it was published before The Heap but if it was there might be an argument IT inspired all three of the others

The Man-Thing is an interesting character. He's a force of nature who strikes down those who fear him, eternally patrolling his swamp to protect the gateway to all realities. I think where writers fail with him is when they treat him as just another monster when he's so much more than that. I hope they eventually give him a series with a good writer who understands him.

I can imagine Man-thing, wielding the reality stone to have the utmost purpose and the means of having the gem for the nexus of all realities maybe the character then would have an understanding why he became the Man-thing, for a reason deciding to become the protector of all realities in the universe which makes sense. I think that would be cool addition of an idea to a story for that character. Taken from his glowing red eyes the reality stone color is red where the Man-thing, could somehow if it were the case able to wield the gem inside of his eyes to control and withstand it's power and the realities.

As someone who grew up loving Swamp Thing as a kid, I can say with all honesty I think I like Man-Thing more. Man-Thing's lack of emotion and it's ability to literally incinerate anything that fears it pretty badass. And it's lack of speech is fine with me. It won't be spouting any cringey one-liners or meta jokes.

My favorite description of Man-Thing is that he is essentially a "Plot device" and I can agree with that, but it also makes him a rather intriguing character. A "hero" who's stories build more off of what's going on around him rather than him himself, he's just there to do whatever it is he does. Man-Thing isn't the story, he's just in it. And I think that's what makes him an interesting character, the world doesn't revolve around him, it just gets in his way.

Thanks for including Gerber's comments on his personal connection. His stories are the character to me. It's ok if others try to carry obscure characters forward. But there's something about how Steve writes people. I love how he writes about the bullied boy in, GS Man- Thing #4 was it, Ruth Hart's decision to mark her time in the weirdness as Paid, and wild satire like the Viking. Richard Rory is vital to the narrative, and for his fall guy tendencies, is one of the most realistic and relatable supporting characters in a Marvel Comic.

One highlight of the Man Thing from the 1980's were his guest appearances in Marvell Team Up and The Uncanny X-Men where he fought with Spider Man and Cyclops against the ancient demon Despayre! This demon feeds on both fear and of course despair and is a source of pain for the empathic Man Thing. Despayre was also trying to tap into the Nexus of Realities to extend his reign through all realms of existence. These were brilliantly written stories by Chris Claremont and were beautifully drawn by John Byrne and Dave Cockrum. Forgotten classics!

I wish Marvel would launch there own Vertigo type imprint where all there horror and weird stuff gets a home. More mature stories and what not would be nice as well with that line. I really want Man-Thing to get an Alan Moore type reboot to him he's pretty cool. Though Im a big fan of Swamp Thing, I would love to see Man-Thing get the same treatment.

The DeMatteis story was partially completed after issue #8. The Werewolf by Night second series was merged with it as a double-sized but only slightly more expensive comic called Strange Tales (fourth series), which was supposed to last four issues, but Marvel's parent company canceled it, as they had with Ghost Rider #94, fearing that it wouldn't turn a profit and not caring about bad public relations. The content of those two issues, which were completed and paid for, was summarized at the beginning of Peter Parker: Spider Man Annual '99, in which Ted, Ellen, the biblical Adam, and the Man-Thing became a composite shamanistic white being who communicated in song. This is the point at which my opera ends. In John Byrne's Hulk run (the first time it was relaunched with a first issue), Adam was said to have left the composite, restoring Man-Thing to the status quo. Ellen's continued existence has not been mentioned. In keeping with the adult origin of the Dead of Night revamp, she was absorbed as food by Man-Thing, but Digger makes clear that that is his version of the story. DeMatteis was revisiting themes from his Doctor Fate series in which Linda Strauss and her stepson, Eric, merged with Nabu to form a new version of Doctor Fate. After the new writer, William Messner-Loebs, came on and brought back Kent and Inza Cramer Nelson, eventually Inza became Doctor fate rather than Kent. I like to think Ellen remains submerged in Man-Thing as Ted does, having been restored temporarily to human form by Thog, the Molecule Man, and others over the years.

He also shows up in Marvel Zombies 3 where the Zombie Universe converges with 616 due to the Nexus of All realities so 616 getting the zombie virus is a very real possibility. Man Thing actually shows up and kills one of the zombies attempting to leave his swamp and I think he also teams up with other supernatural characters to find the decapitated but still (un)living head of zombie Deadpool to completely eradicate the virus from the main universe. Funnily enough, Wundarr is also in this, gets infected but he is able to beat the infection.

You know, on the one hand I want an intelligent comic book, something with some meat. On the other hand I'm really not interested much in those plots that force you to accept that the reasons are beyond the writer's ability to explain to you and the reader's ability to understand. So we are forced to react with the usual "what, what, OK, OK, whatever" and proceed on with the book and the characters. I appreciate when a writer can created meanings that the reader can feel make sense but not when we are forced to just shake our heads and move on ignoring nonsensical stuff along the way.

Man-thing won't ever catch momentum because he looks too much like Swamp Thing mixed with Cthulhu, a boring alias, a boring back-story, a super boring outfit design and is honestly just uncreative. Just by looking at him, you can tell he just exists for no reason lol.

You clearly haven't read his comics. They are creative and out there. Especially under Gerber. He guards the Nexus of all realities. Marvel would be fucked without him guarding it. Lesser known characters will never get a proper shot with jackasses like you about.

@@Noname-ut1ye I admit, my comment was super subjective and full of insulting jargon lol. My opinion has changed. Take care.

Kinda a waste for a swamp creature. Sounds quite boring actually DC Swamp Thing is better but way OP. Ka-Zar? Pronounced - "K-Zar"

Man-Thing is a plot device who never moves the story forward? Tricky situation. I've seen sitcoms with more active characters...
