Today we will tell the story of one of John Mayer's least talked about Fender Stratocasters, the John Cruz Masterbuilt 1962 Sonic Blue. This guitar was a huge part of the John Mayer Trio era and even had some use in the studio when Continuum was being recorded. It's my personal favourite spec for a strat and I thought this would be a great video discussing this really cool, underrated strat!

Would love a video like this about his '64 Strat. In terms of looks, it's probably my favourite Strat ever..

Would love to see a video on his 335. The is absolutely no content about it on KZfaq. Maybe also the tone from “try” and “out of my mind”? Killer tones! Btw. keep up the videos. Love them

CORRECTION: The footage of Gravity from September 22nd, 2005 is not the same as the TRY! Album recording, meaning they used the September 21st performance. So ironically we have both the footage of Gravity and Who Did You Think I Was from the nights they didn't use the recording. Comparing the tones of TRY! and the BLK1 in the footage it does actually sound like the TRY! Recording was with the Sonic Blue, but no way to tell for sure. We know John used it for WDYTIW that night so there is high potential he used it more than one time. Sorry for that mistake guys!

it might be a bit like...eyes doing more talking then my ears...but that sonic blue sounds EXACTLY like off of TRY!. Like.....holy smokes it sounds the exact same.

Hey Justin! Thank you so much for doing this video! You're continuing the work of some of us OG MSM members that are still out there! Sonic blue has been my favorite color for a while, in part because of JM using the JC '62 in the 2005 Bowery Ballroom performance (JM3), Tomo posting this video of his student Michael Lemmo (now of Norm's Rare Guitars fame) playing a '59 John English Strat on his TY channel, and a TGP thread of someone's '59 John English Strat with the most exquisite relicing, although its pictures have been lost to the internet. My main guitar is a Suhr Classic S in Sonic Blue, but it all stemmed from my admiring that S1 switching John Cruz guitar! There are so many shades of sonic blue - I love this "faded" sonic blue finish that isn't quite too white or too blue. You're diving in deep! There is some rare footage in the video that is new to me! Thanks for all you do!

Really feel your passion for the music and guitars, thanks for the videos. One detail though I think his charcoal frost signature Strat was built by Dennis Galuska not Cruz. Could be wrong but don't think so. Great job.

Thank you so much!! And re CFM: John had two Masterbuilt Charcoal Frost versions of his signature strat built! The first one is for sure a Cruz, which was confirmed by Jon Cruz and in a Japanese magazine that did a rundown of John's rig, and the second one is either a second Cruz or built by Chris Flemming (there is no confirmation on who exactly built it and the signature on the back is hard to read in the shots we have, but it's either Cruz or Flemmings).

A sonic blue strat will always be associated with Mick Taylor from TPS for me. If PRS ever made a sonic blue silver sky. Lord help my wallet 😂

Is there a link to that footage of him using it for WDYTIW? That might actually be footage of the album version since that definitely is from the night of the 21st.

Sonic Blue takes on a lot of different colours depending on lighting. In the photos from 2013 it looks a lot darker blue than it actually is

What's with the Sonic Blue strat behind you in this video where your SS used to hang? Is that new? Is that why your SS was for sale? 🙂

@JustinJeske Nice! It jumped out to me right away, especially since you were doing a video about a sonic blue strat! So is the SS gone, or did you manage to hang on to that too? How do the two compare in sound and feel?

that's an olympic white strat. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kN2Bm9N2q7e1eYE.htmlsi=5_xE5HrvzhWQSBpm&t=300 notice it also has a weird nut (floyd rose?) and it has truss rod adjustment at the headstock (not vintage style). i've only seen him use it for his version of crossroads.

John Cruz and the custom shop is the reason why JM left fender - John Cruz has a bigger ego than John Mayer and he was difficult to work with... Never liked the guy... and neither did my friend who worked with him at FCS

You are right in that JM and Fender didn't see eye to eye on customizing a guitar beyond normal FCS specs. But I don't think this was something specifically with John Cruz. JM and JC remained somewhat close even after JM's split from Fender.
