An overview of the Orthodox Study Bible, New Testament and Psalms, published in 1993. (ISBN 9780840783912, 0840783914). Printed in two text columns in a verse-by-verse format, this volume features a 9.5 point, somewhat dark font. The words of Christ are in red. The paper is heavier and more opaque than that in the complete Orthodox Study Bible (OSB), published in 2008.

A footnote in the OSB New Testament and Psalms at Revelation 20.2 states that the Second Ecumenical Council rejected premillennialism. From 22:47 until 38:46, the video discusses the historical accuracy of that footnote. If you are interested in the OSB New Testament and Psalms but not in that specific question, you may wish to skip forward from 22:47 to 38:46. If, however, you have no interest in this particular Bible but are intrigued by that historical question, please begin viewing at the 22:47 point.
Erratum: At the 23:40 point, I mentioned a chart that compares the original Nicene Creed of 325 A.D. to the creed approved in 381, but I failed to overlay that chart onto the video. The chart's purpose was simply to show that the words 'whose kingdom shall have no end' were added between 325 and 381. For those interested, I will post that chart to the channel's Community page.

Great review, per usual, Dr. Jones. As an aside, it's always interesting to see what kind of map/chart you'll have on your desk. Always very interesting material! The ones relating to astronomy look terrific.

Thanks, Parker! A few months ago it occurred to me that viewers might have gotten bored with my desktop. I think I bought most of these maps at a used book store in Long Beach several decades ago. They were selling them at a low price, and I've always loved maps. Thanks for commenting!

Good information thanks Mr. Jones. I like reading about Eastern Orthodox Christianity and even the philokalia, it’s inspiring even though I disagree with certain traditions and practices I respect the severity they emphasize on constant union with God through prayer and such.

Have you ever looked at the "Orthodox New Testament" volumes from Holy Apostles Convent? I understand they are not a canonical monastery, but I have read many people impressed with the possibly overly-literal translation.

Very interesting review, I’d like to get myself one of those Ante/Post Nicene fathers sets but I think they are quite expensive. I was wondering if you have read anything by the historian Diarmaid MacCulloch? Much of his books seem to overlap discussing similar things, would you have any recommendations of where to start, if you have read anything by him?

Thanks for commenting! Those volumes can be read online (and downloaded from) at archive.org, I believe. Regarding MacCulloch, I've read only his 'The Reformation' and a book entitled 'All Things Made New.' Both were very good and you could start with either. I'd like to read his biography of Cranmer, but haven't gotten around to purchasing it yet.

Is the Old Testament, the Masoretic corrected by the Septuagint as well?

No. The text in this edition is the NKJV, which is based on the Masoretic Text in the Old Testament (i.e., the Psalms) and the Textus Receptus in the New Testament. When it was published, the Saint Athanasius Academy translation of the Old Testament translation from the Septuagint hadn't yet been completed.

That's impressive! I don't have nearly that many different translations. I'm not sure I have a favorite translation. The one I've been using most frequently of late is the KJV, mainly because of factors such as opacity of the paper, darkness of the print, and accessible references. But I admit that the beauty of the language plays a role.

@@RGrantJones N.T. Wright released a new testament translation called, "The Kingdom New Testament." it is presented in modern language but does have the same feel and flow as the KJV.

Hi Grant, thanks for the review. You forgot to mention that the Psalms in this edition are not based on the NKJV. Apparently they are a commission and done by a single individual (I don’t have his name on hand). It could be in the copyright page?

R. Grant Jones Hi again, I remember reading reviews of this a while back and some people complained about it. I’ve now found this: orthodoxwiki.org/Orthodox_Study_Bible and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthodox_Study_Bible?wprov=sfti1 It mentions a “Dr. Donald Sheehan of Dartmouth College” undertaking a new translation of the Psalms.

@@Clementkouroukis - That makes sense. I didn't realize that the Psalms in the complete Orthodox Study Bible of 2008 were translated by a single individual, but I'm not surprised. As I recall, back in the 90s people did complain about the fact that the NKJV Psalms were included in the OSB New Testament and Psalms.

R. Grant Jones Ah I see! I thought Dr. Sheehan’s Psalms were in both. I’ve now double checked my OSB and strangely (and sadly) they do not give him any special credits for his translation work. They lump him in with everybody else in the acknowledgment section.
