Osborne Fire Finder - What it is, how to use it. This one is used in the High Point Lookout Tower on Palomar Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest, San Diego County. High Point is the tallest lookout tower in California, standing at 65 feet tall. It is a steel structure with a steel cab atop, and commands a fine view of northeastern San Diego County. On a clear day one call see from Catalina Island to the Coronado Islands in the Pacific Ocean to the west, Mt. San Jacinto to the north, and Mexico to the south.

@@Sapphire_North rangefinder? Well, sort of. Actually what it is is a directional indicator. You line up the smoke with the heading on the fire finder, and you have the exact direction, or azimuth, of the fire from your location. Actual range is dependent upon whether you can see the base of the fire, and if you know how far away it is. For myself, we have a lot of mountains and valleys, and I often can't see the base of the fire. I have to use my best guess for distance sometimes, but at the very least I can provide a heading. If another fire lookout Tower can see it, they can also provide a heading, and then you can triangulate the actual location. Hope this helps.

The azimuth readout appears to have a vernier scale to let you read accurately to a fraction of a degree in azimuth, but the vernier scale seems to have 30 divisions rather than 10? Was the idea to read azimuth in degrees and minutes?

I'm not sure I understand your question, what do you consider the vernier scale? The horizontal readout above the azimuth or vertical part for elevation of the firefighter?

@@humunguswarrior What appears to be a vernier scale is the curved engraved brass readout strip above the azimuth ring - it is attached to the outer face of the rotating top section of the firefinder with two brass screws - it is most visible from about 01:36 - 01:47 in the video, and is in clearest focus around 01:45. and has the numbers "10" and "20" engraved on it, with 10 vertical divisions inbetween. At 01:45 the rightmost vertical brass engraved line is aligned with a horizontal azimuth line, and the vertical brass engraved line labelled "10" is about midway between two horizontal azimuth lines, so perhaps this is a vernier scale for reading to 1/20 of a degree in azimuth? Oh - I think I've found the answer. The azimuth ring is divided into 1/2 degree increments (30 minutes of arc), and the brass vernier scale has 30 divisions, each representing 1 minute of arc. why not use a compass and amap if all it is doing is giving you the azamuth and you still have to guess the distance

Because a map and Compass wouldn't be nearly as accurate, especially inside of a steel-framed structure. With this, you point it at the direction of the smoke and then have an instantaneous heading that is accurate to within a half of degree. Of course that depends on the fire finder being pointed due north. Once you have it calibrated though, it won't change unless you move the building. The firefinder is literally bolted to the cab. Also, dispatch has a computer so that if more than one Lookout can sight the smoke, then they can enter both azimuths and it will give them a location that is as accurate as the degrees given by the Lookouts. It can literally compute the street and nearest cross street for the ground Crews. However, you are quite right in the fact that this is nothing more than a glorified compass and a map. Just a bit more accurate, especially if the lookout knows the location and terrain well.

The form says “get all the facts” but an approximation is not a fact. They should change it to say “approximate distance, degree etc.”

The creator did not explain the vernier scale to determine the minutes, nor the distance measurements and you need all 3 elements to find the proper position. You don't guess the distance. SMH. Delete this video, do the research and start over. Wikipedia has a better explanation.
