The idea that sparked our journey was this: how and where could we film a live concert in a historic location to mark an important milestone in our evolution as a band? We wanted to celebrate our first 10 original songs and our first 5 years together.
Back in the spring of 2017, when Iustin Negru and Armin Fatol were just learning to play the guitar and Mely J was posting occasional covers on Facebook, we started playing covers together. Since then, a lot has happened. We've worked hard, we've grown, and now we're at a point where we can proudly call ourselves a band! Everything we're experiencing now seemed impossible five years ago. We never even dreamed this would be possible. But when you do your job and enjoy the process of growth, life pleasantly surprises you.
With small steps and released songs, by March 2021, on a cold and rainy evening, we were rehearsing in the attic and discussing filming a live concert, but without an audience due to the pandemic restrictions. Out of nowhere, Alex Duță, our drummer, suggested: why not do a live concert at Sarmizegetusa, like Pink Floyd did at Pompeii?
And so, amidst preparations, approvals, carrying equipment, and scorching heat, we arrived at Sarmizegetusa. This place serves as a bridge to antiquity. It's fascinating to think that we played in a place where events were held almost two thousand years ago, where we stepped and expressed our creativity in the same spots where Decebal, Trajan, Burebista, and others might have walked. We want to thank the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization for making this concert possible by providing us with this beautiful venue.
A major inspiration for us was the legendary Pink Floyd concert in Pompeii, without an audience, in the old Roman amphitheater back in 1971. We thought about how we could do something similar with what we have here in Romania. We believe this can also be a great way to promote our national and historical heritage.
We feel that such places suit us very well-places filled with emotions, memories, and history. We are a band that makes music for our own souls, as we feel it, without necessarily aiming to go mainstream, and a place like Sarmizegetusa fits us perfectly.
Looking ahead, we think that when we release more songs, maybe even an album, we might celebrate its launch with another filmed concert in a historically significant location. But that's something for the future.
It was a lot of work, and everything was done independently, without external funding. Everything was self-financed, and the audio and video production was done by us. On top of that, filming on a scorching July day in direct sunlight didn't make things easier. Logistically, we had to carry a lot of equipment, lay over a hundred meters of power cables, and film quickly because we had a tight time limit, but overall, this effort was well worth it, and it brings us great satisfaction that we accomplished this. As we mentioned, at the beginning, we never imagined such a thing would be possible for us.
In conclusion, we hope you enjoy this live concert, the culmination of The Other You's first five years.
