I saw the Outlaws with Skynyd in 1976 . probably the best concert I've ever been to. I'm 64 I've been to hundreds of concerts. The closet was Kansas in a hall that held 200 people 1977.

I think that's what makes southern rock southern rock is that it sounds just a little bit country in the guitar section. But they all use Stratocaster so it's a common thing.

Love it. Got to know this band in very dark times in the late 90s and was blown away. This best of album is a total gem. Technically they are the best southern band. The Florida guitar army as they were called. Southern Rock Blues Country.. It's all very close. Rooted in black music based on the blues that also had much influence on country. These styles are siblings.

Once upon a time there were "Southern Rock" groups like Lynard Skynyrd, Black Oak Arkansas, and Molly Hatchet. There were also "Country Rock" groups like Poco, The Eagles (early Eagles at least), and Pure Prairie Leage. The Outlaws were often branded "Southern Rock' but they actually fell somewhere in-between the two. You should check out a great Outlaws song called "It Follows from Your Heart."
@mtndon3293 ай бұрын
When I saw the Outlaws Molly Hatchet opened for them. Great singing, playing and showmanship the entire night. The Outlaws set lasted about 40 minutes and they went off the stage. A friend of mine who was with me mentioned “boy that was a short set” the crowd was going nuts. They came back and did about a 25 minute version of “High Tides and Green Grass”. I remember seeing the sweat just flying off of one of the guitar players as he soloed.

I've always thought of "Southern Rock" as really "Country" music mixed with "Rock". So I think you're RIGHT on both counts 🙂
@delmarwyatt10273 ай бұрын
When this came out country did not sound like this.
@kevindayton97573 ай бұрын
1977 Country music was already mixing in elements of "Rock" was my point. **and I'd BET that MANY (if not ALL) players of "Southern Rock" had "Country Music" influences.

The Outlaws never disappoint!!! They are Southern Rock with some country leanings. Great pick! Other songs to consider by the Outlaws besides Grenn Grass: Song for You, Keep Prayin', Breaker Breaker, Stick Around for Rock n Roll, Man of the Hour, A Real Good Feeling, Cry Some More, You are the Show, Long Gone, Coming Home, Ghost Riders, Angels Hide, Freedom Walk, just to name a few

OMG The Outlaws probably the best southern rock band. They never ever get the air play they should. Huey Thomason, Billy Jones and Henry Paul. Great vocals Huey's voice was incredible. If you're crazy about this song they'll probably have to revive you if you hear their next album "Playin' To Win". Henry Paul and Monte Yoho are the only surviving members of the original band. Their first 3 albums had a few songs that definitely had a country songs but their music is pure southern rock.

Great music, Harri. I wish that the industry didn't feel the need to label every band and tie them to genre back in the day. The term Southern Rock was crested for several of these bands, but now that you've heard them, you can see that the Allman Bros are heavily Blues influenced. Marshall Tucker is very country influenced, and Lynyrd Skynyrd is rock. I would say these bands, including The Outlaws, have bent the genres and blended influences, so a new genre was created for them. That happened with Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles and others who they created the label of Country Rock for. I say, as do most of us, good music is good music no matter the label they give it....
@debbiechang57813 ай бұрын
I agree that people are too concerned with “genres”. Not every artist needs to be pigeonholed. 😁

Southern Rock in general is a mix of Rock and Country to various degrees as well as some blues. The Outlaws tend to have a more Western sound that goes in conjunction with their name.

"It was diamonds in my ears." I plan to use this first chance I get. I love the Tierce de Picardie at the end, too. Southern Rock does have elements of country music (and even blues), especially at times with the 1 - 5 - 1 - 5 bass line carrying through much of the song. The dual guitar leads with yet another guitar playing rhythm are hallmarks of Southern Rock which are typically absent in country music. So, you are hearing elements of country in there but it's still only considered Southern Rock. Of course, also check out Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, and Blackfoot. There are times in the evening when getting dinner ready for myself that I've listened to this song four or five times in a row, each time concentrating on different things in the song, such as the mix and audio prodution, which are amazing, or the sound of one guitar tone over the other (first leads are on a Les Paul, main leads on a Strat), and more. This song is 100% "Diamonds in my ears."
@terrywoolard750516 күн бұрын
Some others you might want to give a listen to, if you haven't already : 1) Molly Hatchet - Fall of the Peacemakers, 2) The Eagle - Hotel California, 3) Blackfoot - Highway song.

Grew up on Southern rock.... I still love the genre. The only problem with this song is it's too short. Great vocals, 2 or 3 lead guitars, driving beat. Southern rock is very country or folk influenced but is more tempo-driven. You might check out Wet Willie.

Harry, southern rock, country rock, blues rock can all blend together or not; it depends the musical influences of the band members. You heard Ramblin Man by the Allman Brothers?

Fire extinguishers had to be used in the studio after recording this song. Arson was ruled out but cause was narrowed down to a wall of guitars. Great pick pncombies. Harri, you finally circled back to Neal's picks. Harri, only a suggestion. One song per week rotation for Neal. He is diamonds in our ears. Thank you both.

The term "Southern Rock" was a marketing thing just to try and group a bunch of bands from the south that had a similar flavor/style but not the same. Harri here's the deal. The Allman Brothers is a Blues/Rock band more than anything. Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Outlaws are Rock bands. Charlie Daniels and Marshall Tucker are country. There is a lot of tragedy in the stories of these bands, most notably the Skynyrd plane crash. A lot of these guys died before their time. The main guys in the Outlaws were Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones. In 1978 I saw the Outlaws which was probably at the height of their fame at a big venue. In 1995 the band was kind of out of commission. Billy Jones was working as an orderly in a hospital. Billy suffered from severe depression and sadly took his own life in February of that year. Another member of the band, Frank O'keefe would be dead within a month of Billy's passing due to an overdose. Hughie joined Skynyrd to help them survive and repay a debt to Ronnie Van Zant. Ronnie was the one responsible for getting the Outlaws signed to their record contract. Hughie felt he owed it to his deceased friend and the surviving Skynyrd members. Hughie was in Skynyrd for 9 years. After that he came back and reformed the Outlaws. I got to see them 2 more times, once with Henry Paul rejoining the band.
