The main character (if you have read the book) is more than 50 years old. Starring a young actor and director Roland Bykov, who was exactly 30 years old at the time of the film's release. This is one of his first film roles. She immortalized him and made him great and famous. He plays an old man. If you are reading the book, he is described as an "ageless man" (who seems to have been born old and bald right away). The actor himself also lost his hair early and seemed older than his years. To make an "old man" out of him, makeup artists almost didn't have to work hard. But sometimes he successfully and convincingly played people much younger than himself. Nature did not reward him with external attractiveness, but women loved him very much for his leadership qualities of character. He really was a very talented person.

When I watched this movie as a kid, I thought it was a horror movie. A little money was allocated for the production of the film, but the crew and actors did the impossible by creating a masterpiece. Background music and good camerawork. The film was shot not for cinema, but for television (films for large cinemas at that time had been shot in color for a long time, and a lot of money and other funds were allocated for them, but they saved on TV movies (television was still black and white) and therefore it was decided not to allocate money for color and widescreen film. But, oddly enough, the black-and-white image (due to budget constraints) still fits well into this story and adds a gloomy and oppressive atmosphere. From the very beginning, the film was conceived as an ordinary and ordinary TV movie that can be quickly shot and "concocted" for little money. No one thought then that everything would turn out so well. It was a command of God.

This movie is what began my love of Gogol. I have all his works in several translation. BTW, the ending of this movie is not loyal to Gogol's short story. I reccomend everyone read it.

Is this the one Yuriy Norhsteyn's adapting that's taking 40+ years to animate?
