There's also the tv deal which Mickelson mentioned, where the pga relies on their players having high rankings. Agree with darkstar, from a pure sporting point of view, we want fairness in who are the best players currently.

Wouldnt it be strange if we used a handicap system to calculate who is the best golfer. They card scores, the courses are able to be rated/sloped.

The big issue that causes the corruption is that the OWGR board is NOT independent....every board member has a conflict of interest

Exactly. Even if they are not making decisions based on conflict of interest the system is ridiculous. It seems very made to avoid competition.

I listened to this earlier. I had to get away and think about why the OWGR doesn’t matter any longer. They killed their golden goose. They thought they could just keep things the same and that smarter, better informed and thanks to you, golfers thinking about golf’s future and fairness. You have laid bare the corruption of world rankings in golf. They cannot recover. We need a new group to develop a real golf standings and if the OWGR ignores it, they will lose all their majors. I do believe they are that stupid. They don’t want progress. In their view, they are all powerful and will remain blind to reality. Great discussion and a first to really talk about how this corrupt groups actions are destroying professional golf’s future. I will think more about this and all the ramifications it has caused in our loved sport. Golf, rare because so many fans actually play the sport. This is not common in other sports. Our investment as individuals is huge. Thanks for this discussion. I felt the OWGR was blind, corrupt, but did not know why or how.

Look at this week - the Butterfield Bermuda Championship which is a fall series and what used be an alternate event, carries more points than the Nedbank Golf Challenge which is the first of the DPWT final series. No doubt Justin Thomas was paid handsomly to play in this event because he could earn more points playing some off season PGA event closer to home. The Nedbank Golf Challenge used to be one of the greatest and the richest tournament in the world, with amazing limited fields played in the PGA Tour off season. South Africa could get some of the top PGA players and the best around the world. Thats till Tiger (and the PGA) decided to start hosting its own limited field Hero Challenge at the same date, and make it a huge prize fund. Well that spelled the end for Africa's Major. So too did the SA Open suffer because it was usually held the weekend before or after the Nedbank so several Nedbank Challenge players would also play in the SA Open which by the way is the second oldest Open Championship after The Open.

I said this before, the players need a collective bargaining agreement. The PGAT is a monopoly and the only way to deal with the monopoly is a union. Just like the NFL and every other professional sport has done. The players have been nice and they have gotten screwed.

OWGR is such a nonsense way to structure a majority of pro golf status and exemptions… you couldn’t create a more convoluted or less interesting qualification system for the majors if you tried

On Augusta National, i do not think FR gives a rip about the confusion that is the PGAT's handling of LIV.
@nbt36639 ай бұрын
They handled the whole control thing better than anyone. Fred is without question the best chairman the course has ever had. And that really means something. He was smart the way he handled it for the tournament. No member is going to give the chairman anything. Augusta is about one thing... The chairman. And the chairman makes the decisions and no member questions it period. I don't care if you're the president of the United States. You put that jacket on, and you fall in line. And the success of Augusta National is self-evident. Sounds harsh, but it's really not. Fred is the smartest guy in the room. And that's not bs. But he happens to be the most extremely decerning and character driven man in golf. Yep, I think that about covers that. I wouldn't associate the power hungry members of the board of the pgat or OWGR with Augusta, whether they are members or not.
@oahujuniorgolfassociationc66569 ай бұрын
@@nbt3663I agree about Fred being the best of the best but as these guys say they are all tied together which makes even the best make business decisions that are frankly not fair in the actual competition, which is a problem because these are sports which need integrity.

Meritocracy and aristocracy sound close enough I guess. Well explained. @springinfialta1069 ай бұрын
Pretty much all head to head competitions like chess use strength of opponent as the major part of the calculation. Golf is different in that a player is going up against a hundred or so players. It's hard for a relative rookie to outplay so many. If the OWGR gives points to a player languishing in the hundreds who makes it into the top twenty then that is good. If they only give out points to those at the top then that's unfair. Incorporating course slope would be worth considering. But incorporating course prestige seems problematic. If the best golfers are not participating then how is that tournament prestigious? If the reason pros are avoiding once prominent events is because of the money, then they should take the purse into account negatively, i.e. you get fewer points the more money you can make.

OWGR has no credibility anymore...so the current ranking of players is irrelevant at this stage. Does anyone with half a brain thinks the top 45 (less the 3 LIV players in there Rahm, Cam and Brooks) are better than all the LIV golfers? Answer is no...so OWGR is by implication irrelevant. Seems the majors will take their lead from OWGR rankings...and if so, their significance will fade rapidly as everyone will know it's just another golf event for PGA players and not a tournament where the best of the best compete for the title...as simple as that.
