I got a ride in this airplane in 1985 at the Yakima, WA air show, Bud Granley was the pilot. 40 minutes and it was 300$ .

That is absolutely, positively the most beautiful sound track to an airplane video ever. You guys really know how to pick the music you put with your videos. You should get a award. By the way, I fly a p-51 Miss America reno racer - mine is a little smaller - and flies a little slower - wingspace is a little over one meter and top speed is just under 100mph. Oh, and I am not in the cockpit when I fly it. I do airshow aerobatics with it rather than race around a pylon. Rc flying is a wonderful sport....ask Hoot Gibson - he flies at our rc field sometimes.

I remember her from the Abbotsford Airshow days back in the 60's and 70's when I was a teen. Watched Bob Hoover fly her one time. He got her up on her mains and ran down the whole length of the runway and pulled her vertical and went literally out of sight!! That's burnt into my memory and I like to think that was how Bob got to Heaven.

@FLYINGMUSEUM-aviation-videos9 ай бұрын
"Hello, thank you for your comment. The reason in response to your question is that Dr. Brent, the owner and pilot of Miss America, after the race, uses the Mustang to enjoy it and fly with passengers occasionally, which is why he keeps the original canopy and the aircraft as a two-seater."

Miss A has a prop that is geared differently from a stock P-51. Because the race engine generates so much more power, the gear ratio from engine rpm to prop rpm is increased so the prop tips don't go supersonic. At the same takeoff power as a stock P-51 (50" manifold pressure, 3000 rpm) the prop spins slower, so it takes more distance to take off than a normal P-51. At race power, (depending on how much the motor is modified), the pilot will run much more power, sometimes in excess of 80-100" of manifold pressure

This airplane has never looked right after Howie Keefe sold it and a new owner screwed up the paint job on the tail. Reno is sure not what it once was, the RARA ran it in the ground after 50 years; no real race in the last 10 years, just choreographed guys flying in circles
@FLYINGMUSEUM-aviation-videos10 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment Pilotc180. 😎 On a positive note, the plane was purchased by doc. Brent and brought back into the races. This effort led to the revival of Miss A, creating new Gloria moments and preventing it from being left sadly in a museum, where it had been previously.

Several years ago in Texas there was an attempt to have air races from Grayson County Airport ( Perrin Air Force Base) Sherman Texas and it was no more than airplanes flying in a somewhat scattered formation merely making laps around the course. Even non aviators in the crowd commented on what was offered up as air racing.

Hi! The P-51 was a “game changer” for WWII as the Mustang provided critical escort for bombers. The maneuverable Mustang is fast and was a proven champ in dogfights with German fighters. The P 51 "Miss America" was purchased in 1958 from the military. In 1969, the aircraft was painted in its current paint scheme to honor the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. Mustangs were modified by the original manufacturer for air racing: North American Aviation NAA, which in times of peace sought to use Mustangs for civilian purposes.
