One of English History's worst Kings was John. He was known for being a King who was incredibly savage and cruel to his people living within the Kingdom, but he also lost large amounts of land during many different military campaigns. Even his own Barons turned against him, and went to war with him throwing England into a deadly civil war. It was the King vs The Barons, but eventually The Barons managed to capture London and forced John into coming up with a settlement. King John was forced to accept the demands of the Barons, and was forced to sign the Magna Carta.
The Magna Carta was an extraordinary document that limited the powers of the tyrannical King, and stated that the King was not above the law and was held accountable like ordinary citizens. Following this, John continued to go to war with the Barons, and fight against them. But in 1216, as he was campaigning across the country against them he was taken very ill. John eventually died inside of Newark Castle, but there are many rumours about how John died, and some even allege that the King was poisoned or murdered by monks or even his enemies.
The accepted cause of death for John it's believed was dysentry, caused by food that was contaminated by human waste. Dysentry caused horrendous stomach problems that resulted in death, but whether John died of this or of more sinister means remains to be solved. John was one of England's worst Kings, but he met a very painful end.
So join us today as we look at, 'The PAINFUL Death Of King John Of England - England's WORST King.' Remember to support our channel, please make sure to subscribe.

John was much maligned. He had to serve as Regent and hold England together while Richard was swanning off on Crusades in pursuit of military and religious glory, spending huge amounts on these ventures, which the Treasury could not afford. Richard spent less than 6 months of his reign in England and spoke not a word of English. John was faced with a further depleted Treasury when his doting mother, Eleanor, scraped up every available penny and went into considerable debt to ransom the swashbuckling son who had managed to get himself captured by an enemy he made on Crusade. When Richard died John inherited one hell of a mess. Yes, he could be cruel and despotic but he must have been very bitter that he had been left to cope and been hated, whilst Richard had been totally irresponsible and become a legendary and loved King [mostly due to the efforts of their mother.]

His reign was sabotaged
@-yeme-
@-yeme- 17 күн бұрын
@@1aikane yeah, sabotaged by himself alone. right from the very start when he picked out some minor Gascon noble with a pretty face and elevated him above the entire peerage of England to trigger the first uprising against him, which resulted in restrictions on his power and the death of his favourite, Gaveston, through his absolute military ineptitude and the loss of practically all his continental possessions, the rebellion of the Scots that his father had spent decades quelling, the humiliation and rejection of the magnates upon whom his power depended, the alienation of his queen, the daughter of the most powerful man in Europe, the King of France, because he would rather spend time digging ditches with brawny commoners than wooing her, to his final end when he got hopelessly manipulated by one of the worst men in history in the person of Hugh Despenser the younger. that final episode lead to the flight of Isabella back to France where she teamed up with one of the dispossessed barons of England, Roger Mortimer, who just happened to be one of the best military commanders of the age and a really, really bad guy to annoy, and the subsequent invasion of England by Isabella and Mortimer, the deposition of Edward and either his permanent exile to Italy in disguise, or murder by one of the most comical/brutal methods imaginable, depending on which version of history you believe. Edward was completely incapable of living up to his responsibilities as King and had no one to blame but himself for the disaster of his reign. there were three ways to go for a King in the late middle ages, you could be a military hardman, a pious inspiration to the nation, or a diplomat, legislator and administrator. Edward failed at them all.

Was he really as bad as history (the victor writes history) given that the Barons were the instigators of all the trouble, most of them being of French descent? King Richard, whom I believe to be the worst King because he hated England and used the Country as a cash cow for his constant wars. King John inherited a land that had been raided for taxes and empty coffers. I'm also suspicious of the Austrian kidnapping of King Richard. That would be an act of war by any standard, so why didn't Richard seek revenge unless he was part of the plot.

Dysentery is often cited as John’s cause of death, however, after suffering his first symptoms at Swineshead Abbey not far from King’s Lynn, he was dead four days later. Dysentery was well known in those days and was treated and often cured. Amoebic dysentery is a very severe disease but it is unlikely he had this as it usually only occurs tropically. He certainly could have died from dysentery but it also could have been any number of acute abdominal conditions. I also think that the precise date he died is not definitely known. I’ve seen the 18th, 19th and 20th stated.

It was actually his brother Richard 1 (Lionheart) that promised the rights of Normandy and Anjou to Philip 2 of France in exchange for Philpip's help againgst Henry 2nd, so John may be innocent of "losing" these territories. Many British monarchs have been the victim's of propoganda, what most people knoe od Richard 3rd is from the biased viewpoint of Shakespeare. John's war with Philip 2nd was probably because of Richard's promises, much in the same as William 1st (the Conqueror) was promised the crown of England by Edward the Confessor. The Lionheart only spent about 6 months in England, pursuing crusades and not considering his kingdom as important, probably for piety reasons. The Magna Carta was signed, revoked and resigned many times and was more of an instrument to appease the Barons and Lords than help the common folk.

Anne is not a prohibited name for persons in possible line of succession. After all, the present Princess Anne was second in line until Andrew came along. Under the current rules, she would have taken precedence over Andrew until William arrived. I'm not sure about Stephen, you'd have to look at all the names of every monarch's offspring since the first Stephen. It's not always the eldest son who succeeds, nor is their regnant name always their first name.

Either way I’m still honoured to be a Great Grandson of a former King of England, regardless of how bad he was perceived to be. The names anyway i know very little about Robin hood and the story and the only time I watch a movie about it was Mel Brooks's comedy movie Robin Hood Men In Tights and that's what I got the names from and not sure if the original story had those men in it! So if anyone don't mind answering the 2 movies I appreciate it alot!? Thanks and have a great wonderful blessed day and stay safe everyone! ☺️

John was not a great King but he certainly was not the worst. He inherited a financially broke kingdom and had to impose taxes to support his army which he needed to keep King Philip of France at bay. When his mother (Eleanor of Aquitaine) died he lost most of his support in France and had to retreat to England. He tried to get these lands back later and did pretty well until his allies lost a crucial battle and he had to make peace. As for England, being the first King in 40 years to spend a lot of time there, he upset the Barons who were used to a lot of freedom in their actions. One of his biggest 'mistakes' in dealing with them was he upheld the law. They were used to running roughshod over the lower classes and John amazingly defended the rights of the peasants. Between this and high taxes they felt justified in rebelling. While John was forced to attach his seal to the Magna Carter, he soon denounced it and a second revolt broke out. John had his supporters and might have won if he hadn't died. William Marshall, probably the most respected man in England, supported John and made sure his son became king. Everybody just loves to hate John.

His main fault was that he went back on Magna Carta (forced on him by rebel barons). This was in fact a reasonable way of balancing power by placing the King constitutionally 'under God AND the law'. Magna Carta was a product of the return of rich, powerful and well educated crusader barons, who were not old style unconditional feudal supporters of absolute monarchy. They had brought back from the east, the seeds of the renaissance. John was not alone in resisting this cultural evolution; Simon de Monfort rebelled a generation later, to establish parliament (to make those laws). 'Evolution or revolution' (JFK)

Why? If not for the treachery of Stanley, Ricky three would likely have won the battle at Bosworth field, and remained king, as he was known to be a good general and warrior. Sure... there was the wee troubles of the missing princes in the tower, (of which history has no clear explanation, only conjecture) but many kings did away with their rivals.... and boy kings, ruling at that stage of the war of the roses, simply wasn’t going to cut it for Ricky and his potential future.

@@johnrogers8836 Totally agree. Much of todays viewpoint on Richard is based not only on modern perspective of what should be but also ignores the influence on history of Shakespear's propaganda piece on Richard 3rd. It also glosses over an aspect of English politics that plays a hidden role on most of the internal and some foreign conflicts even to this day. The feudal system of raising an army and its allegiance.
