One my favorite things about the dinosaurs in Calvin and Hobbes is that you can see the improvement in them over the years. They're dated, now, but some of Watterson's later dinosaurs were pretty accurate for the time.

Hi, DnD fan here. What you said is correct in the Forgotten realms (one of the main and canon settings of the game), but in DnD every setting / dimension has its own lore and history (and so reasons of the presence of Dinosaurs). I thing thet the setting where dinosaurs are more used and know it is Eberron (where they are normal animals and tamed by the halflings).

As a Pokémon fan it pained me to hear that section of the iceberg. Especially since Pokémon itself has actually influenced paleontological discoveries.

I'm a massive fan of iceberg videos anyway but this has been great. It's really interesting to see the different types of media. Movie, cartoons, games and art. Even within each medium there is so much scope based on the era it was made and the target audience. Can't wait for the next one.

Haven't watched the vid nor seen the iceberg yet, but the first paleo media which comes to mind is the 1955 Czechoslovakian movie "Cesta do pravěku" - Journey to the Beginning of Time, from what I remember, it was praised (and still is to this day) and is quite influential.

I had such a killer dinosaur deck in Yu-Gi-Oh back in the day. Apparently they've gotten better but I'm an avid blue eyes player now 🤣 (it's my favorite card)

Man, seeing that EyeWitness TV show intro gave me that nostalgia feeling. Pokémon was a video game before it was a trading card game. The origin of dinosaurs in D&D varies by setting. In the Eberron campaign setting dinosaurs are just as common as modern animals. In the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, dinosaurs are almost exclusively found in the regions of Chult and the Malatran Plateau.

Aside from all the dinosaurs (including multiple archetypes and the decks of multiple anime characters), Yu-Gi-Oh also has the Paleozoic cards, which all based on animals from the Cambrian period. But Digimon is definitely the kids' monster franchise with the most dinosaur presence; over half the series have the main protagonist's partner Digimon be a dinosaur.

I remember going to libraries and only reading the same eye witness dinosaur books. I completely agree with your point on living the old uncanny realistic depictions.

I think this would better fit a "Non-paleo media that featured dinosaurs" than a "paleo media" iceberg video. I think I need either one or the other but not both mixed in at random 😅 Like probably any show, game, or whetever that goes on long enough will feature a dinosaur somewhere eventually.

Dnd also has, atleast in 3.5 edition, a race of Dinosaur folk, called Saurials, they show up again as none playable characters int he 5th edition adventure called Tomb of Annihilation where players need to navigate the jungles and temple ruins of Chult to stop the evil plot of the evil Lich Acererak

These paleo media are probably on one of the next tiers, but if not, do bring up Fossil Fighters, Dinosaur King, and E.V.O The Search for Eden.

Someone's probably already said something but on the Pokémon thing, I feel the need to clear up some of what you said: - Pokémon started as a pair of Role-Playing Games on the Nintendo GameBoy, the card game and anime and such came after. - "Pokémon" is a shortened version of the term "Pocket Monster" similarly to how "Digimon" is short for "Digital Monster" - While there are plenty of Pokémon based on dinosaurs, Garchomp and Tyranitar in particular are based off of a large litany of sources, with the former taking inspiration from sharks and Wyverns and the latter being an obvious reference to Godzilla. - Given the time this game came out, it might have been a good point to talk about the Fossil Pokémon of Galar (Pokémon Sword and Shield) which are based off of Chimera Fossils.

I hope the manga series Dinosaur Sanctuary, Gon, and Kimi wa Sukinosaurus make it in the later tiers. They're all good paleo media.

This was a really fun dip in the deep pool that is Paleo-Media. In addition to being a prehistory geek, I'm also a huge Pokédork. I respect that you don't want to join our -religion- -cult- fandom, so I'll just say that there were a couple glaring inaccuracies with your overview of the franchise (namely it was a video game first, not a card game, and it started out as a bug-catching simulator from an amateur entomologist who wanted urban kids to experience nature in a fantastical way). I can look past it, since I know you were pressed for time, but there's more to like about our -obsession- series than you know. 😅We've even got a lot more Paleo lore and parallel history to our own. For example, the fossil Pokémon you mentioned are all rock-type (think genus or order) because they are resurrected from fossils. This means we fans don't know what their original typings or appearances were. In one set of more recent games, there were even fossil Pokémon that were brought back as fused together abominations, based off the infamous Bone Wars in our world! They're hideous, but hilarious when you know what they're based on, and again, we don't know exactly what the original 'mons looked like. Very recently, we had a game where the playable character travels to the ancient past and encounters extinct Pokémon species. Many of them are directly related to creatures alive "today" in the Pokémon universe. This teaches kids about branching evolution and even convergent evolution, jumping off from the original concept of learning from the natural world through fantasy.

There was a dinosaur game I used to remember playing on the computers at the kids daycare section at Life Time Fitness Gym.

One of the pillars of the immeasurably varied and influential Mecha genre of anime, is a series created by Devilman and Mazinger Z creator Go Nagai and his friend and pupil, Ken Ishikawa, in 1974, Getter Robo. The story of the 3 young renegade pilots who operate 3 fighter jets that combine into 3 different variable forms of the titular Getter Robo, to fight against the dreaded Dinosaur Army. After surviving extinction caused by a Solar Flare that contained traces of Getter Energy, the radiation that powers the Getter Robo, the Dinosaurs had hid underground for millions of years before they arose to take over the human world with onslaughts of "Mechasaurus," colossal cybernetic, Dinosaur-themed Kaiju-of-the-week. The franchise would go on for decades and influence the modern anime landscape even today, inspiring everything from Evangelion to Gurren Lagann. Highly recommended!

I know there's about a million Dinosaur video games, but I just wanted to shout out Paleo Pines. It's like a Stardew Valley/Animal Crossing, but with Dinosaurs. Having a lot of fun playing it with my Six year old daughter, who's a big dinosaur fan.

One nitpick. When you mentioned Pokemon. Pokemon started off as a videogame that spawned a card game out of the videogame's success. Not the other way around.

Oh BOY did you underestimate how much Sentai/Power Rangers loves dinosaurs. There are 4 different dinosaurs Sentai/PR series in general but there are also dinosaur themed mecha in non dinosaur themed teams like V-Rex/Q-Rex from Timeranger/Time Force and Kyoryu Origami from Shinkenger There's shitloads of them in Sentai's sister franchise Kamen Rider too

I love how realistic Bill Waterson drew the dinosaurs compared to humans 🤣 He was a great artist! I loved his style

Main Marvel Universe also has it's version of Lost World - called Savage Lands (if I'm not mistaken) - remoted Island populated by all sorts of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures and rulled by tyrant named Sauron (not the same as Tolkien's) - terrific huge green pterosaur-man with telepathic abilities. Although he was overthrown by Skaar Son of Hulk in the recent years if I remember correctly. Savage Lands featured in X-Men The Animated Series from the 90's and in Hulk And The Agents of S.M.A.S.H.

I just took a closer look at the Iceberg in the description, and I got to say there is a lot of media included in it. I googled some of the stuff at the bottom Tier and it seem it's going to get weird.

Personally i would love to see that documentary about the great dying which featured puppet props.

Oh my god the series Dino Squad needs to be added to this, it was such a weird show remembering it now. My family had like a dvd of it that I would watch all the time. From my foggy memory of it the plot was these people would turn into dinosaurs to stop this guy who would put dino dna into stuff that would turn things into dinosaurs, I think they also were able to turn into dinosaurs because if this guy.

Im not sure if it will be here but I hope the PvZ franchise is mentioned as The sequel has prehistoric and Mesozoic levels and a comic that involves Dinosaurs. Overwatch also has mentions of dinosaurs. Genji’s favorite animal is triceratops and in the Toronto map I think, there’s a museum with a rather accurate depiction of a tyrannosaur drawing Tina from TAWOG also somehow looked worse in later seasons as she looked like that dumb Papo Rex instead of a stylized but oddly accurate rex

Maybe another entry for the iceberg would be dinosaur anime and manga and palaeofauna in fantasy novels and books . There have been a few dinosaur anime in the 70-90s and early 2000s or shows that had dinosaurs in it like dino adventure jurassic tripper or ryuu the primitiveboy . Kimba the King lion had dinosaurs in it and naruto and one piece also have dinosaurs or dinosaur based powers and the recent season of goblinslayer also has the mokele mbembe and the lizardman uses dinosaur names in his magic Rituals. There are also quite a few dinosaur Mangas like dinosaur sanctuary , blue hole , giant wo Ute , cretaceous period and blue world . There are also chases of palaeo fauna being represented in fantasy novels and Media. Game of thrones has most famously dire Wolves and mammoths and also has cave bears and aurochs in the novels. The keepers of lost cities series also has prehistoric animals living among magical creatures

I hope Zoids gets covered. I mean, if we are covering Transformers and Power Rangers, why not zoids? There were so many dinosaur type zoids. It’s also fun considering it’s 40 years old so you can look at Death Saurer in the old tail dragging stance, Geno Saurer in the bipedal stance, and even feathered raptors like Storch and Bio Raptor Gui, so even Zoid models have grown with the paleontological discoveries. Not to mention the delight of Bio Zoids having a skeletal frame (I adore my Bio Megaraptor Glear, a glow in the dark variant who looks like a ghostly skeleton at night), some Zoids Wild zoids having a skeletal frame under the armor that looks like fossils, Zaber Fang the smilodon type zoid, nor the Bone versions that have pictures of the dinosaur in the back. … Sorry for the text wall. I like zoids.

Also Sillurians from Doctor Who are not aliens - they are advanced sentient reptile species lived on Earth before humans in the time of dinosaurs, than get hypernated during Cretaceous extinction - only to be awake in 20th century and beging conflict with humans (also there are Sea Devils - almost the same thing but amphibians and I can be mistaken but they live on Earth even earlier). That how we got Silluarian Hypothesis name - it had been giving by DW fans. Some scientists suggest we might not be the first sentient beings on this planet.

I don't understand how this list works, I would not consider Skyrim paleo media just because two game models resemble paleo creatures we would have to put so many video games on this list for having a couple prehistoric creatures. Also Magic the Gathering probably has more dinosaurs than yugioh, they literally just released official Jurassic Park cards, and have had two sets set in a world of dinosaurs.

Wonder if Marvel 1602 or The Savage Land are going to show up later in the iceberg.
