These were actually interesting questions, and I can see Richard had fun answering them.

The Panel was pretty good. I remember seeing it live once and Daragh Ó Briain doing a warm-up before. The format is good. Imagine they got Dawkins on and it could be funny and a little bit educational. I love the idea of this interview/guest thing in the middle of a panel show.

I wish Dawkins could be like this all the time, he's a much, much better scientist than (anti)-theologian. I find him acutely difficult when he goes on about atheism being rational - it isn't a rational position, agnosticism is a rational position. Anyway, the panel is a wicked show.

@timchilli no, but this is their show, and they have to be funny on it, because its their job. Its not like they were not letting Dawkins make his points or anything, they actually seem pretty cordial, so I don't know what your problem is.
@en27312 жыл бұрын
@TomFynn I understand what you are saying but considering that we all operate under varying degrees of faith (inherent in cultural morality and judgement) I don't see religion as necessarily the most obscene form. I'm very much of the anti-fundamentalism school of thought. And I do feel that it is important to protect the technical parameters of logic - atheism is not logical as it presumes extra-universal knowledge and from a materialist stance that's impossible.

@boredofargueing "And you are correct, it does not rule out the possibility of a Creator, however unlikely it now seems." I can't agree with you on the last part of the sentence because we just have no clue as to where it all came from. I see our observable universe as like a box, and science is doing a great job of explaining how all the things work inside that box, but there could be anything outside that box. It's not scientific to say that there's probably nothing outside the box.

Have to say as a catholic (but studiyng science in TCD) I was dreading watching this video . I always had an opinion of Richard Dawkins as being rude and ignorant. However having watched this video I am happy to say I coudn't have been more wrong. Yes hes blunt about creationism but I mean who wouldnt lose their minds arguing with them crack heads. He made very good points and I loved his analysis about Newton and Darwin. Aoibhinn should have said more considering she is a physicist.

Why does he think that it is more likely that in a million years we will have reverted to some kind of barbarism (or gone extinct)? What was the reasoning for that? Otherwise I enjoyed listening to him talking about evolution instead of religion all the time, and the interviewer and panel were good.
@elusiaboomkin41009 жыл бұрын
well the extinct part is because 99% of all species that ever lived are extinct, everything dies eventually. even if it's not in a million years, in 5 billion years the earth will be burnt to a crisp, and even if we moved elsewhere, the universe will eventually go cold and dark and spread out so much that even the bonds of atoms will break. the animal known as a human will not exist forever. and as for the barbarism thing, with overpopulation and us destroying everything before the universe does it itself and simply applying what we've shown we're made of in the past can lead you to think we may end up there again.

@3p1cBlu3 This was recorded in 2006 when Bush was president, so he was calling Bush a monkey. It's interesting that saying the same thing about different people suddenly makes it racist for one and not the other. Funny how things work :D

Atheism and Agnosticism are not as closely related as that. All atheists are also agnostics, as atheism is the lack of belief in a supreme being and agnosticism is the lack of certainty in regards to any given faith. I don't believe their is a god, but I am not certain there isn't one, I just choose to live my life as if there isn't. For this reason, I am an Atheist and an Agnostic.
@criticold7 жыл бұрын
You can be as certain that there is no god as anything else you consider yourself "certain" of. What you seem to be saying here seems to be "You can never be 100% certain" which is really just white noise and bears no meaning.

@en273 A) We all operate on varying degree of missing information. Big difference. B) Religion makes a virtue out of not *wanting* to know. That *is* obscene. C) Bullshit on your take on atheism. It is precisely *religion* that does that.

@montrealwatcher seriously, chill out, nothing's worth getting this worked up over.. and i didn't want to put it like this, but either you sound unintelligent because you can't express yourself in english well because you're not a native speaker (e.g. your misspelling of the words 'referring', 'then', 'fucking') , or it's because you actually are that unintelligent.. i tried giving you the benefit of the doubt .. obviously you'd rather continue with ridiculous arguments than accept an apology

@en273 To call unreasoned and unreasonable propositions without even the slightest bit of evidence like religion bullshit is the most rational stance one can take. I see no reason in giving any bit of credence even in cop-out form agnosticism to iron age fairy tales.

why he never compared selective breeding and evolution. in a sort selective breeding is forced evolution. much faster and much easier to understand.

Slightly funny, but I can't believe that Richard wastes his time on a show like this. There is a time for brilliant comedians and a time for great scientists.
