I am a 57 year old German and still love this song. I was brought up by my grandfather who was born 1912 and fought in WWII, not voluntarily. One day in France he and another soldier ventured out of the camp, without their weapons, to climb a mountain as they both were keen mountaineers. Halfway up the mountain they encountered members of the Maquis who could have easily (and understandably) killed my grandfather and his friend but they didn't. Instead, they were a group of like minded mountaineers and talked. I am forever grateful as otherwise I wouldn't be here...

So he was allied with the Soviets and other democratic/republican countries fighting the democratically elected Austrian painter in republican Germany and their allies. Where do you find freedom in today's world? Were you free during the illness, or a prisoner in your home? Do you get to choose what to do with your income, or do your owners decide that most of it should be used for a higher purpose? Are you raising your children or do your owners have a higher goal for them? Freedom is being able to choose and that freedom died with the First World War and the democratic takeover.

In loving memory of mister Henri Poirson , a french resistant I met twenty-five years ago . He was asked in 1942 by his boss to help some fugitives to go through the german lines , in the Vosges . Henri simply answered "Yes" , without consider risks for himself or his family . He was caught by the Nazis soon in the year 1944 and sent first to Natzweiler-Struthof , then Dachau . He survived because he had some friends (real life companions) who gave him some part of their poor eating... When Henri , who was really tall , came back home in his Vosgian village , his weight was less than 45 kg... The first time I met this gentle man at my job , I immediatly saw a tattoed number on one of his arms . Shy , I asked him what was that tattoo . So he explained me calmly what he did during Second World War . Since then , I really loved to talk with him ! He could speak about every subject with wisdom and humility . I miss him since the end of 2017 ... :'(

The Francs-Tireurs et Partisans Français[a] (FTPF), or commonly the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), was an armed resistance organization created by leaders of the French Communist Party during World War II (1939-45). The communist party was neutral at first, following the Soviet Union's official view that the war was a struggle between imperialists, but when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 changed to a policy of armed resistance against the German occupation of France. Three groups were formed, consisting of party members, young communists and foreign workers. Early in 1942 they were merged to form the FTP, which undertook sabotage and assassinations of the occupation. The FTP became the best organized and most effective of the French Resistance groups. In March 1944, before the Allied forces returned to Normandy, the FTP was theoretically merged with the other Resistance groups. In practice, it retained its independence until the end of the war.

There's something strong in his harmonies. They'v touch my soul all along my life as many souls all over the world. I'm from France and i knew my neibourgh since a long time until i discovered she was a fan of Leonard Cohen too. Here "Suzanne"'s song is even more popular than this song because there's something strong in the music and we feel some kind of strong poetry even if very few people understand the lyrics. I saw Leonard in the 80th at a bad punk festival were they shouted at him not even knowing who he was, he was really in a bad situation. He could stand on some us because he saw some of us who knew his songs. Kept him confident. Fortunatly he had his revival. And this live session is really amazing with these strong musicians.

50 years ago and this was the 1st song by Leonard Cohen I had ever heard. I was a 14yo dating a 21yo guitarist named Ronny Anson who played lead for a local back up to the stars Miami rock band and well loved by The Ale House. The band was called the Stuck Zipper never did find out why. This talented musician and lover of all things musical made born in me a love for all things Cohen. You showed me how to follow each LC lyric to an unknown place and how the lick of a guitar, mandolin or fiddle would take me swirling into an out of body experience. You taught me that Mr Cohen should be followed for a lifetime for the gift to earth that he is. I am 65yo and still following. I remember all the lyrics to almost all of his songs, still, to date, my heart becomes saturated with an emotion I cannot name upon hearing any one of his songs , the hearing of all of his music you so eagerly shared has never left me, how well you taught me how to see by hearing, and for your owning every Leonard Cohen album yet published, low glow golden lighting in your room with Famous Blue Raincoat playing softly in the backgroimund and the chords twitching your long fingers and the lyrics dancing in your eyes, oh how I was mesmerized by his songs and your love for his genius and you. Thank you Ronnie Anson may your life have been filled with million acts of kindness.
