This movie is loosely based on Francis Marion. He was the first person in that time period to use guerilla warfare tactics. The british fought in lines because they wer trying to civilize war, but he would ambush from the forrests and swamps. Thats how he got his nickname "Swamp Fox"

The reason they fought in formations like that during those times was because it was the only way for them to control large armies. The invention of the musket made it possible to pull someone off the street and make them an effective soldier with minimal training. This allowed armies to easily grow their forces to sizes never seen before, but created another problem: massive forces like that would quickly descend into chaos if not strictly controlled. So they set them up in formations and used drums and flags to send commands. Believe it or not, even with how slow and lumbering they seem, these types of forces were the height of military prowess at the time and would absolutely decimate smaller forces. Only the invention of modern electronic communications were we able to control large forces without having to resort to these tactics.

When we look at the side of the story portraying the loss suffered, I belive it's important for American History to realize that at least a dozen of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence lost everything up to but not limited to their property & families and most of the others didn't live long enough to see end result of what they had signed themselves up for.

Guns were extremely inaccurate and that's why they line up to shoot. It's madness I know. The worst part is when cannonballs are fired near you. They instantly dismembered whatever they struck.

I love The Patriot, especially Mel Gibsons performance. The scene where Mel goes crazy over the death of his son gets me every time. This movie is definitely the best movie by Roland Emmerich. The Patriot might just be the best Hollywood movie we have about the American Revolution. But I think it couldve been better.

The British Colonel Tavington is loosely based on the real Colonel Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton was a savage, reckless, but very brave commander of the British Legion Cavalry. He is best known for sending a flag of truce with an offer of surrender then slaughtering 113 American. This act enraged the Patriots who later defeated Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens. Nathaniel Greene led the Americans to victory there, not the Swamp Fox. That battle is seen in the movie when Conwallis is finally defeated. In the Battle of Cowpens Tarleton left 86% of his troops dead, wounded, or captured. In the final Battle of Yorktown Cornwallis is defeated with the assistance of the French Fleet. After the battle, the Americans gave a dinner and invited all the British officers with the exception of Tarleton. Tarleton returned to England, served in government and opposed the abolitionist movement to the day he died. One of my biggest objections to this movie is the burning in the church of the towns people. No such thing was ever recorded in history. While there were brutal British officers they did not behave as the Nazis did 160 years later. I am so familiar with the battles in the Carolinas because I taught North Carolina history for 20 years and all the battles I mentioned are within a 3 hour drive of my house. The site of the Battle of Gilford Court House is about 30 minutes from where I live.

The past 70 years of peace including the fall of the Soviet Union and communist tyranny in Europe were only possible as American Soldiers, over 300,000 Americans during the height of the Cold War, sacrificed time with their families and if need be their lives defending Europeans against tyranny like the kind on display in Ukraine and Israel on October 7. This is why countries like Bulgaria are free today.

Mel Gibson can make historical accurate films but this is not one of them , When it comes to the British Mel will do his very best to portray them in a horrid light and the rebels as some sought of heavenly beacon , In reality nobody liked the Americans the Native peoples sided with the British and the Black people also chose the British not all but the vast majority , Unfortunately the Americans won with the help of Spain and France and so Slavery till 1865 and Jim Crow till 1969 was the result of all men being created equal.

We stupidly learned how to fight our armies like the countries in Europ had done for generations. Considering how we battle today, this really does look insane. We soon started learning tactics from the Natives in this part of the world. The British though of it as 'cheating' as we stopped standing in rows to be targets.

It is ironic that they chose 2 Australians to play these American revolutionaries, as Aussies are still subjects of the British Crown.
