In 2000, there was this technology sweeping the nation called the internet and the world wide web, and during week 3 of the 2000 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings were planning on hosting a webcast of the game on their website, just as they had done without issue for every game thus far. And the New England Patriots, seemingly not knowing what this was, refused to allow the Vikings to do it, leading to a massive conflict between the two sides that needs a deep dive

13:19 Something like that actually happened in the NHL this past season - a game in Buffalo got postponed due to heavy snow and in turn stranded the TNT announce crew. So instead, a game between the Panthers and Red Wings got slotted in and was called from the TNT studio.

As somebody who has sport sidecasting, I can confirm trying to call a game strictly off a TV screen does indeed have it's difficulties. Especially when you have to mute the TV Audio to prevent a copyright strike. The toughest sport to call strictly off a TV Screen is Hockey. Unless you memorize the players faces or studied the players number enough to know who they are, it's hard as hell to describe what's going on.

Do a deep dive into Lee Hacksaw Hamilton, who lasted one preseason game as Vikings PBP announcer in 2001 while Larry Fitzgerald Sr. did a deep dive into racially insensitive comments he made on his San Diego radio talk show over a 15-year period. Vikings hired Paul Allen the following year and the rest is history. BTW - was driving around Minneapolis when Blair Walsh missed the field goal in the Wild Card game. Nearly drove my car into a snow bank laughing at Allen's call.

Ah yes, Hacksaw Lee. An exciting hire for the Hawks if only cause he was replacing the abysmally dull Steve Thomas (not the one who hosted This Old House after Bob Vila but it might as well have been), unfortunately 15 minutes of him doing a game wasn't the same as his highlight reel, so he was one and done and was replaced by the far superior Brian Davis then Raible moved over. Though much like Dave Niehaus, Pete Gross was an all-timer and would have gone out sometime in the last decade had he got to do so on his own (F cancer), and Raible--the Rick Rizzs of the unit--would have moved over then. Which meant no Hamilton, ever.

I’m sure Grossi will appreciate the shoutout. As far as the story goes, I used to turn the sound off during national broadcasts of the Lakers and Dodgers so I could hear two legendary broadcasters, Chick Hearn for Laker games and Vin Scully for Dodgers games, heck, people used to take radios to Dodger Stadium just to hear Vin, I don’t know if they still do after his retirement and subsequent passing, though. However, today, I’d rather watch Tom Grossi’s commentary rather than the broadcast of the NFL

You raised the point of how early this was in the digital transformation, but totally discount the Patriots legitimate right to question if they could get in trouble for breach of contract by allowing the stream. There was a lot to figure out on both sides back then.

This is very similar to what happened 3 years later during a 3rd Round FA Cup tie between Southampton & Tottenham. Like with the Vikings-Patriots game, there were multiple options to follow the action. The first (and most expensive) was to watch the match on Sky Sports via their PPV service since they had the rights to it. The other was to listen on the radio via the BBC on BBC Radio Southampton or BBC Radio 5 if you lived anywhere else in England. Due to the fact that Sky Sports had put the match behind a paywall, Southampton decided to offer a free webcast (more like a live stream since they would have a camera crew film the match) to their supporters who couldn't attend in person. However Tottenham threw a massive fit when they heard about this as their TV crew for Spurs TV (the team's TV channel) who were filming footage of the match for the weekly magazine/highlights show would likely be kicked out by the live stream crew. Tottenham asked the FA to ban Southampton from live streaming the match which the FA did not do mainly because Southampton was the home team & had the right to do whatever they wanted in terms of giving media credentials. The Spurs TV crew even if they were allowed into the stadium likely would have not gotten much positive highlights to show as their team got thrashed 4-0 by Southampton in one of the most embarrassing performances Tottenham has ever put on in the FA Cup.

My local commentators on the radio are brilliant. I challenge anyone reading this to name any current broadcast team on national TV that doesn't suck. They're not just mediocre, they outright suck. There is nobody left on national TV that isn't absolutely 100% fucking dreadful. And don't even get me started on the halftime shows. Terry Bradshaw needs to be forcibly retired, preferably to the bottom of the ocean.

A contract is a contract. Losing viewers has nothing to do with it. BCN had exclusive audio broadcast rights. That's the end of the story. Asking the Patriots was the wrong move as it was BCNs permission they needed. As for region locking content A) the Vikings didn't offer and B) what eventually became vpns were available back then. We had other work arounds as well. P.S. a ton of New Englanders have the game on the TV with no sound and the radio up because the local radio broadcast is infinitely better.

1st year under Bill. Defense was ok but offense was quite atrocious. Back when cmgi now gillette was under construction. Roster wise, it is one of weaker ones in the Kraft era due to poor drafting and had cap issues. Had Kevin Faulk and JR Redmond leading the RB room, no TE with East Boston's Jermaine Wiggins on roster since Ben Coates I think was a cap casualty

Turning back the clock like that regarding internet/radio/tv coverage definitely is interesting. Two other turn-back-the-clock items from that particular game that I thought of while watching. 1) Tom Brady would have been in uniform for that game and it would have been funny to see him sitting on the far end of the bench while Drew Bledsoe toiled on the pitch ... given the circumstances that would unfold a season later. 2) While the action shots of the game were being shown, I chuckled looking at the stadium. Remember, this is 2000. so the Patriots' current stadium was under construction literallly right next to where this game was being. played. It's funny to see how old Foxboro Stadium looked in 2000, after just about 30 years of use. And now, many of the stadiums built in the `995-2005 range are considered old and out of date themselves. Finally, a question I don't have a clue about the answer to. But, I recall forever that Foxboro Stadium was always considered a nightmare of a place to get to and out of on game day. Yet, when the new stadium was built, it was in the exact same location, meaning the traffic woes that crippled Foxboro just were passed on to the suddenly aging Gillette Stadium.
