The store owners will usually switch tickets and send their relatives to collect the winnings. This has been going on for decades. ALWAYS SIGN THE BACK OF YOUR TICKETS. These folks do some dirty business. The lottery commission usually repossess the store owners lottery machine after being caught.

This is the oldest scam in the book. Store says "Oh sorry, they arent winners" then they cash YOUR real tickets by a relative.

The state immediately smells fraud when the store buys a winning lottery ticket for itself and a customer is complaining, regardless of the backstory. Since when did the business buy it's own lottery tickets to make money? How would any customer know of a winning store ticket?

It's interesting to me how people who are so hurting for money are worried about a 2.50 ATM fee but can blow $60 on lottery tickets.

Something like this happened to me at a store in Leeds, England, but it was only for a winning lotto ticket worth £25. One of the men behind the counter took my ticket, walked to the back of the store and started to act like he was confused and started 'making noises' about there being something wrong with the ticket. I told the man to give me back my ticket, and another customer, a male, started telling the storekeeper that he was being shady and that he should either give me the money or give me back the ticket. With both of us making our own 'noises,' the man got nervous and forked over the £25.

That's the problem with making things complicated. Buy as many lottery tickets as you have cash on hand...period.

I’m watching this in November 2023 and this is now a huge problem of stores keeping people’s winning tickets.

I saw hidden cameras in a lotto stng where shop owners actually switched winning tickets out with non winning tickets on hand then told buyers it was no good. Later shop owners would cash it in..

Crazy! What sense does it make for you to keep the tickets IF she already paid for it?! 🤦🏽‍♀️ His behavior was disgusting!

That was beyond big blunder on his part. He should be fully aware that she would bring the police report. He gave a statement to the police in the report, then proceeded to lie about it in court. How the heck did he expect to get away with that??

I'm from Buffalo and those people have brought every corner store in the city and look down on the community that pays them.

In NC, the retailer cannot pay out that amount, can only pay out 599.00. For higher amount they have to go to the lottery commission. For tax purposes.

Man tried to steal a lottery ticket. He's gambling with his life.

Mind you he called her broke, said her whole life revolved around lottery, peer pressured her to tip his son, and gas lighted her. And referred to her as “these ppl” that come in to his store on top of everything else. Don’t let scammers like “these people” at gas stations hold on to anything of yours.

Everyone calling her broke because she didn’t want to pay the atm fee but did you ever think that is why she has extra money to play because she doesn’t pay extra fees. I know older people that are far from broke that will not pay for anything they can get for free. I have worked for people doing private care and they have plenty of money but shop at good will clip coupons and got to the food bank. My point is don’t judge people.

i worked lottery almost 10 years. I have been there; "don't have the money to pay for tickets can you hold them till get back". I made it clear if not back 5 minutes before closing it would be canceled or sold to someone else. 90% of time i was able to sell it or buy it myself other times canceled. Few times people got angry because i sold or canceled them but they don't understand the rule its not theirs until its paid for, until it is it's the states property. Worse was playing keno or racetrack tickets and customers would play their numbers and game closes and stand there watch the game play and not pay; I would tell them pay for the tickets and they would tell me hold on, game ends they would tell me cash the winning ticket and deduct what's owed, i refused until they paid. Boss got upset with me a few times about that; telling me its his business he will run it his way. I left after getting tired of the industry in 2019. I follow the rules; if i don't and get caught that go's on my record.

I am not saying what the defendant did was right, however if that was the policy the store adopted, allowing customers to leave and return while holding their tickets, it was a foolish method of doing things. Perhaps he did it that way in the hope of scamming winners (Who knows if he has done this before, and it was a lesser amount so not reported) but the other side is why was she constantly buying tickets at the last minute, then running to her bank? Take cash with you when you first go into the store, and there is no chance there will be any dispute.

I landscaped in college. On a project next to a gas station, the owner did not want a tree planted against his property line. The next day, a lit street lamp was in place against the tree. The station owner attempted claiming lost money from not being viewable by passing traffic. It went to court. I was a witness. What blew apart the station owner was that my truck had to be moved from where both were not yet in place, PROVING it being recently installed. The foreign owner would not shut up saying only "you police are supposed to protect me." He lost in court and swore in English almost as good as I could.

This is what many store owners do to people in poor communities. TAKE THEM FOR EVERY PENNY THEY CAN. and then they wonder why the citizens of that community don’t like them.

i have lived in the middle east for over a decade and this is real. whether if they owe you or you owe them but they charge interest. 10% per day i was charge. your credit card machine didnt work and now i owe you extra. you took too much money from my credit card, and now i still have to pay 10% to get my money back. i have seen that ledger and they want to see id to get your name right. dont let these folks fool you.

Regardless of the store owner and his son's actions, this lady got the ball rolling by asking for $59 worth of merchandise with a $50 bill, then paying the difference out of the winnings after the numbers were drawn. Those tickets should be forfeited once the numbers are drawn, because what if none of them were winners and she decided to never return?

Dumb policy. I don't care how credible the person is. If they don't have the money to pay for the ticket, they don't get the ticket.

This guys son is smart to stay away. I'm sure he's at home with a big bucket of popcorn watching this guy make a fool of himself

The short term gains of grabbing those winnings will long term lose him a lot more than those winning tickets ever paid him.

The sad part about this case is I'm born and raised in Buffalo and we have a lot of corner stores in Buffalo and I have seen firsthand some of the store owners scratch-off those lottery tickets and some of the shady practices that they do. Those corner stores make a lot of money and if he was behind on bills that mean he blatantly is not paying his bills and he doing some stuff he has no business doing

Never trust convenience stores. Especially with lottery tickets.

I want the plaintiff to teach me how to play the lottery and be that consistent. 😮
