Was thinking the same. Only makes it more dangerous for the person/thing you're shooting at. Just sucks if there's an ammo shortage though... but then again, this is not the weapon you want in an ammo shortage anyways, because it's unlikely you can hunt with it. Each "barrel" probably has a completely different Point of Impact. (and there's no real way to aim accurately).

Yeah... because they couldn't. The least amount of time this sort of handgun would take to load, even with an experienced user, would be over 30 seconds. The simplest thing to do was just swap out the cylinder for a pre-loaded one.

I think it was an issue of safety that made them. It had to be designed so that if multiple rounds fired simultaneously, the shooter wouldn't get injured. There were tons of awesome gun concepts made in the era or flintlocks and also percussion caps but the problem they always had was that carbon build up and loose tolerances could cause unintended chain fires.

That’s what a pepper box is supposed to do is fire all barrels at once so this isn’t a pepper box as he has it listed it’s a revolver with a 1.5 in barrel per chamber

@@Beatmeater87 I believe the majority of pepperbox guns have always fired all of their barrels at once. Otherwise, they're incorrectly labeled as pepperboxes. I've seen some that fire one round or a group of barrels (like 3 barrels at a time out of 9, or 12 or 18 barrels, etc...). I think the very term pepperbox means that they all fire at the same time, like a "volley fire" kind of gun. Otherwise they're not pepperboxes, but are just revolvers.

It's possible to get them all to fire at once (called chain firing), if the seal in each chamber has a big enough gap. Forgotten Weapons did a video on the pepper box a few years ago

@@crimsonemperor2219 I thought the majority of guns called "pepperboxes" were all designed to shoot all chambers at once. If you google pepperboxes and look at the images of all the older models, they usually only have one firing mechanism, because all the chambers are interconnected and fire at the same time. If I'm not mistaken, by definition, a pepperbox must shoot all of its rounds in a single shot. I have seen some called "pepperboxes" that shoot a couple barrels at a time too though. (Like 3 barrels per shot of 9 barrels, or 3 out of 18 barrels fire each shot and stuff like that). I'm not sure if they're really considered pepper boxes though. Kind of like there's Deringers... and there's Derringers... and they don't necessarily mean the same thing.
