Last time it rained every night interfering with rewaxing (it wouldn't dry as the bike was exposed), fortunately I carried a prewaxed/precut chain and could swap regularly. Is there an alternative way to manage a waxed wet-tour chain?

#askgcntech Hi GCN TECH: My Ribble has 11-Speed 105 on it. Would a harder wearing chain like a Sram XX1 or Shimano Ultegra wear out the cassette and chainrings faster than using a cheaper, less hard wearing chain? Or is a hardwearing chain always the best route for longevity for all the drivetrain components?

#askgcntech All your bike cleaning videos contain usage of water hose outside the house. Not everybody has access to a water hose and a place outside to wash a bike or car stations willing to let to wash bikes. So the question is, how to wash a bike in urban environment where all you have is a rented apartment in a block?

Bear in mind that 34-34 of the Roubaix is a ratio of 1,0, and the 42-44 of the Diverge is 0.945, just 5% softer. They won't notice the difference, and the Diverge is 1kg heavier... I'd say the Roubaix is better. As another commenter said, if the 1x chainring were a 38, that'd be another issue, but with a 42 I'd go with the 2x Roubaix

On Diverge vs Roubaix - my advice is if you are going to go for the 1x to have easy gearing, do not do it by halves, go for it. I put a 38 front ring on my Diverge to do the Fred Whitton, mostly because the prospect of grinding up Hardknott with too big a gear after 90 miles did not make me feel wonderful. The Flanders hills really are nasty, and you are not going to regret being able to spin when that is an option. A few teeth won't make that much difference, but many will. 38:42 = 0.9 is nice. Biggest is 38:10, but who cares? Spin out in Flanders? Gaps are wider, again, who cares? That would be annoying in the Flandrian Crit... I tend to set up bikes in extremes - light bike is super light, aero bike is super aero, etc.

People confuse Endurance bikes with All Road Bikes. Gravel bikes are mainly for gravel riding. Endurance bikes are mainly for the road riders looking for a fast and comfortable bike to put in long days in the saddle. Think century or double centuries. All road bikes are meant for on and off road surfaces but not necessarily designed for going long distances. There are exceptions and everyone is different but these are my general guidelines.

I have a Argon 18 Dark Matter Gravel Bike, 32mm tires with a 42x33 front and 11x36 at the back and it's more relaxed than an endurance set up, I got this than a endurance bike because of the tire clearance possibilities

Last Saturday I rode a 300K road event on my Diverge with road tires and wheels. This Saturday I'm riding a 150K gravel event (3500m elevation gain) on the same bike with gravel tires and wheels. Works for me.

Perfect... just what I needed to read and in line with my thinking if I can save up to rationalise my four bikes (Mezzo folder, Orbea urban, 2007 SystemSix 23C tyres, 2018 Roubaix 25C tyres) down to two. As far as I can see, the main benefit of disk brakes is ease of swapping rim widths

@@cuebjI've found swapping my gravel wheels for mud wheels on my disc brakes bike still requires some brake adjustments between the two sets, but it's loads easier than when I did the same thing on a rim braked bike.

Bananawax Drag Reduction & Friction Professional Chain Wax. I swear by this stuff been using it the last 10+ years. it's expensive but your chain lasts X3 longer, Chain doesn't rust, it doesn't slip. Look after your chain, it will look after you. People spend thousands on groupsets, and the chain is overlooked.

Great video! I feel a good gravel bike setup for the average or even competitive rider is just as fast as a $10k/£10k road bike (emphasis on good meaning tuned to purpose).I purchased a Scott Addict Gravel 30 rolling on Sworks Pathfinder tires and syncrose carbon wheels a few months back and have since set a few strava KOM records on my local roads here in Southern Utah. . I now can not be convinced that a top-tier road bike would be any faster. Plus, I can fit 45mm tires on this. My Giant Propel is good as gone.

@@gcntechI regularly rent bikes in the USA and so I’m used to switching brakes. Every time I’ve used them in an emergency, including yesterday when an bin lorry overtook me, then immediately tried to turn right across me, muscle memory kicks in just like you say. Quite scary really.

There is no truly effective way to remove rust from bike components without taking them off the bike. But it's so easy to do that, why even bother with half-assed solutions? Three $5-$10 tools, a $4 quick link, an adjustable wrench which everyone has or should have, and you're in business. Then soak in just enough Evaporust to cover, overnight, scrub with old toothbrush, rinse off, dry, reinstall, and you're done. Don't throw out the Evaporust as it can be reused many times.

The rule of 105% stated that the rim must be at least 105% wider than the tyre to gain aerodynamic advantage. Some wheelsets like Roval Rapide CLX II and Reserve 40/44 has a wider external rim width at the front and narrower at the rear. Which tyre cobination is faster, using a wider tyre at the front and a narrower tyre at the back following the rule, or using equally wide tyres at both wheels, which have lower rolling resistance but too wide for the rear? #askgcntech

As the air is already turbulent as it reaches the rear wheel, aero is less important than with the front wheel. At the same time, more of the weight is distributed over the rear wheel, so you will benefit more from reducing vibration losses by running a wider tyre at lower pressures on the rear. Follow the rule of 105 on the front, go wider at the back.

@Mauriceweller going from 46 to 40 means shortening 3cm each sides, not 6cm, If you want more wiggle in the hoses and housings you could keep 1 or 2cm. but the advice of doing some kind of trim remains, 3cm extra, is adding a lot of winding, on electric cable is not a big deal, but for Hydraulic hoses and or mechanical cable housings it's considerable, leading to rattles kinks, pinching, critical increase in cable friction, and housing wear.

I have ridden the Flandrien Challenge 3x. I missed a segment on the first go, Strava wasn’t linked right on the 2nd so I did the one day. All three were on the Roubaix with 32 tires. Between sectors it was great. The Cobbles are miserable half way through the day. I would recommend the diverge if you are not a seasoned cobble rider. Both gearing will get you up the hills. For me it comes down to comfort. Good luck and pay attention to the routes.

#askgcntech Which of these scenarios is more aero and faster: A, the rider has an aggressive bike and isn’t flexible enough to get into an optimal aero position on the bike, or B, the bikes geometry is more comfortable (higher stack) and the rider can get into an aero position (elbows bent 90°). Considering the trend in TT bikes where the handlebars are in a higher position I would assume scenario B is to be preferred. Thoughts?

Dumb question, so in the UK, is the right lever for the rear derailleur and front brake? And the left lever is the front derailleur and rear brake?

Yes that is the British Standard. However in the era of downtube levers people often had front brake on left which enabled braking and changing gear at the same time. Obviously doesn't matter now with modern levers. I still use front brake on front due to riding a motorcycle

Regarding the last question. I agree with Ollie, ride the Roubaix, unless it's rim brake as descending the back side of those bergs on cobbles will be much more pleasant with disc brakes.

#AskGCNTech Are heavier riders more susceptible to perineum numbness on the turbo trainer? I had a proper bike fit and out in the real world there are many bumps or changes in gradients where I force myself in different cycling positions. When I’m on the turbo in one position, I find myself feeling numbness after about 15 mins and have to switch positions. I am a heavier rider and would theoretically have more pressure regardless on my sit bones-should all turbo trainer users be changing positions up, anyway?

Don't know but I don't use a trainer. I have a cheap (£350) static bike left by my son when he moved away. I set it for 99 minutes, Do 15 minute warm up off the bike,;jump on and keep HR up for 10 minutes; jump off and do pressups, kettle weights, plank, skip, or whatever; 10 minutes on bike; rinse and repeat doing a range of routines off the bike including a HIIT workout; last 10 minutes on bike is warm down to as near resting HR as I can get; stretch. That way, I get a wide range of exercise including maximal efforts and easy sections, control HR (following heart attack), never overwork one part of the body or press down on any sensitive bits. Rollers might be better for perineum than turbo trainer

I weigh 105kg and never have perineal numbness, it's nowhere near touching the saddle. Sitting upright doesn't work as well when you are big. I suggest a 60 degree back angle, 90 degree elbow angle relaxed road position that loads your arms up with a bit of weight. This mixed with a large cutout saddle will give you a setup where only your sit bones are touching the saddle and nothing else is even close.

#askgcntech Hi Olly/Manon and Ian, 2 part question: With the trend towards larger volume tires what is the limitations of road bikes having a standard clearance of, say, 40c, would aerodynamics be adversely affected. Also why do alot of premium tyre models top out at 30c, which is the largest size I can find listed in retailers for the P-zero race tlr. Love the show.

#askGCNtech A good chemistry question for Dr Ollie. It's understood that a tire filled by a CO2 cartridge bleeds the CO2 quickly after being filled over the next few days. Why aren't these cartridges filled with plain air? Plain air isn't flammable. And the air would stay in the tire longer.

Stability of the mixture inside the cartridge (moisture in air, O2 may react with the metal shell...) CO2 liquates due to pressure inside the cartridge, so the pressure that the shell has to bear is lower. Air would be in compressed gas form, so the pressures would be much bigger

I'm buying my first road bike, and hopefully have nice rides on the weekends, but will probably use it on the trainer most of the time because I simply don't have much time during the week. I want to go tubeless, but I'm worried that it's not great if the tires are stationary for relatively long times. Is that a concern and would I be better off with some TPU tubes or not? I bought a low/midrange gravel bike (Specialized Diverge E5 Elite) and I want to upgrade to a nicer road bike later. Does it make more sense to upgrade all the components slowly over time, then when I'm ready to upgrade, buy a new frame and put all the components I've accrued on the new frame? (while selling the old bike with the old components). Or should I stick with what I have, and then just upgrade to a new full build later down the line?

#askgcntech chain checker tools have a side for .5 and for .75. The old one I have has a .75 aide and a 1.0 side. I recently replaced a chain that just barely passed the .75 side and hanging it up to cut the new chain is not very noticeably stretched. Why did the tool change? It seems if I was replacing between .5 and .75 we’re retiring chains with a third of service life to go.

1.0 stretch is only for fixed gear use, will mess a geared bike up. The new narrow wide 1x mountain bike and 12 speed road setups get their chains changed earlier than before, that's why the tools changed.

I have an entry level GRX group set off my grizl from a change to one by. Could I just change it all over as they are both 10speed. Just a matter of changing bottom bracket and brake callipers. #askgcntech What is the main reason why mountain bikes or fitness bikes are slower? I know it's everything coming together, but is it the weight (which I doubt), the tire rolling resistance, the riding position (aerodynamics), or something else?

I think a lot of this comes down to the type of rider and what they're doing. For more amateur riders who aren't going at high speeds, it'll be the weight as they just won't be able to heave the bike around as quickly. For more athletic riders, it'll be the aerodynamics and rolling resistance that really gets them.

The rider is 80% of the air resistance. The upright rider position is the main reason mtbs are slower on the road. Knobblies don't help, but it is mainly the position.

#askgcntech what’s your opinion on speed sensors? Mine recently ran out of it’s none replaceable battery and I’m not sure if I should invest in a new one or trust gps for my speed data.

Neither. For bombing around SE London for grandchildren, locking to railings (the bike, not the gks), etc, an urban bike is best (I chopped 30 mm off each bar end and might remove more). I found my Specialized steel Langster fixed gear with 23C tyres and better wheels from Brick Lane Bikes was fine for rough roads, lumpy byways, and paths in Dorset but gave it away during lockdown and being resuscitated after heart attack - wish I still had it as the continuous effort is far better for the heart than riding up hill then down then having to stop at a long red light (it's the drop in heart rate after effort that's bad. If I do sell my current 'race' bikes, I'd replace with... gravel, no, endurance... whatever, something with two pairs of wheels for 40mm tyres and 32mm tyres. Age 69, I can still touch my toes so don't like high bars

#askgcntech My bottle of chain drip wax froze for a few days while in my garage over the winter (I live in Canada). There is a warning on the bottle to not let it freeze. Is it still OK to use? And this got me to thinking, what about the wax on my chain when my bike is stored in my garage or shed over the winter? If the wax in the bottle shouldn't be frozen, what about the wax on our chains? Should we be dewaxing our chains when storing them for winter? Note, I know this questions seems out of season now, but I have asked it many times, hoping it makes it onto the show soon!

I also have gp5000 32mm lying around which I'm considering putting on for only this road trip. However I'm too lazy to swap them since they're tubeless setup. Do i have a huge disadvantage over 600km road with my 40m? Thanks love you

#askgcntech . Hello my loves. I know i come late to the party because it was hightly debated before as i can read but what is the diffrence between a press fit bottom bracket and a threaded one ? Wich one is better ? How can I tell wich type is on my bike, I bought it used ! Thanks !

PressFit bottom bracket standards are fine only if the tolerances are met. Problematic ones will induce creaking or radial overcompression on the bearings. Threaded bottom bracket standards have the advantage of using the same tool to install and remove them and are more tolerant to slightly subpar tolerances. One way to know which type of bottom bracket shell a frame uses is to refer to its spec sheet or look at the frame itself if the bottom bracket shell is free of components. Identifying it with components attached isn't as easy for non-mechanics as thread-together PressFit bottom brackets exist, which sport splines for tools to thread the two halves into each other, which non-mechanics can easily assume them to be threaded bottom brackets. What's the model year, brand and model of your bike? No vague answers please if you want as much help as possible. 🙏 I cannot help without as much information as possible.

#askgcntech hi GCN Tech team. Every time I’ve taken my bike on a plane the airline has asked for the tyres to be deflated. If I run a tubeless setup, surely the sealant will end up leaking all over everything if I do this. What do you guys do? Keep up the great work!

It takes energy to put out sound. The only source of power in a bike (non-E-bike, that is) is the rider. So it takes your energy to make the acoustic energy coming from your hub. The louder the hub, the more energy you are being robbed of. However, I doubt it's a high as even the rolling resistance of tires, i got no numbers to back this up though...

Generally, the higher the POE (points of engagement) count, the higher the frictional drag and therefore, the quicker you slow down when you coast.

So the tire on a hookless rim should only be mounted once and then thrown away? Here’s a better idea: Throw away the hookless rim, keep the tire and mount it (or pretty much any other tire you like) on a hooked rim, and be on your way. Hookless has zero benefit for the consumer.

@@gcntech Ha ha, ok that’s fair enough , you guys have access to the best bikes, so maybe not always and his hill climbing bike set up is probably as spot on as it could be. But for the Tour des Stations Ultimate he went with an aero bike with more of a racing geometry rather than an endurance one, even the tops looked uncomfortable (but liked the shifter buttons). I probably would have gone with lower gearing too… and a shorter stem 😂 And the tyres were 28 but he should have gone bigger to save his arse. I felt every bit of the pain that Ollie suffered and loved the video and the bike set video, but I didn’t agree with the choices made. I did a 315km race in Sweden, way easier than the TdS but I bought a Ribble CGR AL for the task, and put on 40mm g-one RS tyres for the extra comfort without sacrificing too much rolling resistance. I also went for a GRX 2x gear set to make those climbs a bit easier. And it get it that Ollie and GCN presenters want to improve and get faster, wanting to finish first, not wanting to be passed, but for us mere mortals an ultra endurance event is all about enjoyment and comfort so you can keep going without the pain (or not too much of it anyway) And that, your honour, is why Ollie picked the wrong bike (and set up) for the TdS, in the GCN workshop, er…with the candlestick.

Scrap all the comments I've posted ever. Just cleared my bike shed and pumped up the tyres on the 2007 Cannondale SystemSix Ultegra. Rode it for the first time since late 2018 when I bought a second-hand 2017 Roubaix Elite. Oh, wow! What a delight. 23C tyres pumped to 115 psi, Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels. What a joy! Age 69, after massive heart attack 4 years ago to the day. Bike was so alive, taut, precise, position was perfect so I was on the drops with head well down but felt balanced (Roubaix is too tall for me unless I can get a negative bar stem and new bars to lose the silly upwing to get nearly 2.5cm more drop. The 2007 Ultegra rim brakes stopped dead if I wanted. Back in the day, I'd ride that bike all day on gravel and rougher around Dorset coastal paths, roads, byways. I bought it in a clearance sale in 2008 as the carbon fibre front half and aluminium rear triangle wasn't selling by then. Still the frame won the 2007 Giro and three or four stages of TdF under different riders - sprint and mountain. What an all round dream machine! Anyone want to buy a 2018 Roubaix Elite? Now I need to do some big rides on rough roads to remind myself about punctures. There's probably a case for a fast riding bike with up to C35 rims and tyres and lower pressures just for the puncture resistance.

#AskGCNTech I recentelly moved to a new town that is very hilly and my current setup, Sram Rival 52-36 with a 11-28 short cage, is being painful to ride. I want to change to a big casset but because is a short cage i'm stuck with the 28. Can i change only the cage or i need to change the whole dirailleur to fit a big casset?

If you have a short cage, get a medium cage. And that will allow a 32 rear. You can also change out the chainrings for a compact if you aren't worried about absolute top end.

@@DaveCM I run marathons so if I end up with knee problems it won't be from an impact free activity like riding a bike. I tend to believe most knee problems are caused from a lack of activity not too much anyway. Atrophy of the muscles around the joint cause the joint to lose support. All the people I know with bad knees are people that sit around all the time not people who are active.

When did "road bike" become "endurance bike", "touring bike" and "racing bike"? I'm honestly not sure what my road bike is anymore. It's based on the angles of a racing bike but eased up a bit to make for more comfortable daily and longer-distance cycling in non-competitive situations. Does that make it an "endurance bike" or something else? To me, it's still just a road bike.
