Our buddy Jon from the Junkyard Jet team has just scored his first ever classic, a Small Block Chevy transplanted 1962 Cadillac Sedan DeVille.
This Facebook Marketplace find is a little rough around the edges, but it runs, drives, has classic, timeless looks and in our opinion is the perfect starting point for someone with little cash or experience to get into the Classic Car hobby.

I turn 21 at the end of this month. For the longest time I really wanted a 60s car. I wasn't looking for speed, like in the video I just wanted a cool big old car. I ended up finding a 66 newport with a 383 and a 3 on the tree and I have learned how to rebuild the carb and do various other things on it. It's been a blast.

Even in just the first 5 minutes this video made me smile cause I have a similar story. A couple of years ago I bought a 61 imperial with big fins from my grandma, rough around the edges but all complete and is running. Power windows, power front bench seat, power antenna, 4 doors, acres of trunk space, etc. It's no mustang or camaro but it's the perfect road trip car and oozes style.

Just bought a "rough" '72 Custom Skylark driver. This video describes exactly what I was thinking when I bought it. Something I can drive while I rebuild and restore it. Something that is not so bad that it's an eyesore but definitely nothing special to look at... yet. It has solid bones, and is basically a blank canvas. Something I can literally do anything I want to. Great video... really appreciate this type of content.

This is a beautiful survivor car. I remember when I was in junior high these boats were so long that occasionally I would see the fins hanging out from a garage door that didn't make it in the garage. Right now all over KZfaq I see early 1950s Packards as survivor cars. This needs to be a fun, affordable car to enjoy. Go for it! Now, go get your buffer and get to work. As far as gas mileage, remember the old story of the Caddy that pulled up to the gas station and the attendant told the driver to shut the engine off so the pump can catch up.

Those were the cars we had fun in back in the 70's. Somebody in the back with the ice chest handing out the beers as we listened to 70's rock and roll, and drove slowly down the empty endless gravel roads, no traffic in sight, getting good gas mileage.

The most fun car I owned weas back.in 1969 when I was all of 19. I bought a red 1961 Plymouth Fury 2 dr ht.with a 361 Golden Commando single 4 brl. for $1500.00 Canadian. What a boat, but as you say people stopped to take notice wherever you went. Unfortunately the Calgary Alberta winters were not kind to the body and rust became an issue. However, gas was cheap in ‘69, about 42.9 cents for regular and 45.9 for premium. I sold it in 1972 when I bought a 1961 Porsche 356 for $1100.00 Canadian. The speedometer on the Plymouth was a thin red liquid crystal line that displayed your speed. Too cool!

Man, I can't wait to finish rebuilding the engine on my '69 Toronado. I'm 20 and have loved to be in classic cars and live around them: they're simple, unique, and fun to work on. I currently have a '03 Tiburon as my daily driver and I like it, but once this 455 is done and working, I'm gonna drive it as much as I can. Even before the rebuild, I used to drive it like hell and sometimes drive it around 100-200 miles on a few trips. And despite the worn out piston rings, piston slap, insane amounts of carbon inside the engine, the headgaskets going out, the ocassional overheating, and a leaking gear box, oil pan gasket, etc., it still ran like a clock and was smooth like butter. Even the mechanic who is helping and teaching me how to rebuild its engine said that he was surprised that it was able to go down the road for that long with all these issues. I think that says a lot about how these cars were built in the past. Sure, out of the factory, new cars typically last longer compared to the classics, but once they start having issues, it is more likely that you'll need to call a tow compared to being able to make a few adjustments on the carburetor or simply driving it home slowly. And I know that there are still some fun cars that are being made today, but as a whole, cars that were built analog in a dominantly analog age had soul. You were the blind spot monitoring system, the "autopilot", adaptive cruise control, and the active brake assist. As much as I like how technology is advancing and helping us progress, sometimes I feel like we just a moment to breathe, take a break, and appreciate how we got here in the first place, and for me, that's just taking the Toronado out for a cruise as I listen to the radio that's either in the car or under the hood.

You are truly blessed to have such a ride! In high school (1975) I bought my first Toro - a fully loaded '68 for $75.00! Shortly after I bought a '69 - it looks close except for the small fins on the rear quarters and the grille being small rectangles opposed to the '68's honeycomb grille. The interior was almost identical with the exception of the '69 having locking steering. An easy upgrade you might consider is changing to a HEI ignition. It drops right in, is hidden by the air cleaner and well worth the change. Another change I considered was the intake manifold. You'll notice the stock manifold "drops" somewhat in the center. This is due to the transmission being located UNDER the engine which I'm certain was done for clearance. Even a stock cast iron intake would be an improvement IF it will fit under the hood. Good luck!

Back in '94, a kid named Phil worked as a photographer for Petersen Publications. They had recently moved to Orange County, California. Phil bought a '59 or 60 Chrysler Newport. Light metallic Green land yacht. The car was a lot car at Universal Studios. Never registered nor driven off the lot until Phil bought it. Car was in great condition and his daily driver. Everyone at Petersen geeked out over the car. Phil couldn't run into the 7-11 or gas station without fielding questions. Car was definitely a Chick Magnet as well.

I got a 1968 Chrysler Newport on FB Marketplace for $2800 dollars, it ran and it drove and that was a large part I even bought it for that money. 383, Torqueflite, perfect little car to tinker around with and very easy and pleasant to work on. Everything I've done on the car was legitimately enjoyable to tune and work on, which sound crazy but the parts are just so simplistic (bordering on crude if we're honest) that it requires very little brainpower and so you're just there experimenting with different options once you put it back together once or twice. I love the sedans and always will as cool as a 68 Charger is or a Roadrunner or a Mustang.

I have a 1968 Plymouth Fury VIP that for me is the perfect entry level classic car. Very easy to work on, all the parts that make it stop and go are still available and its actually more reliable than my newer stuff. If Kentucky didn't put such crazy amounts of salt on the roads in the winter, it's the only car I'd want to drive all year round. The VIP has been in the family since the late 70's and it's the third 67-68 318 powered Fury we've had and as it turned out, the best of the three though I still miss terribly my '67 Sport Fury. Some of its parts live on in the VIP. Love the slab side Mopar C-bodies!

Dad always said, "you don't need no dang timing light!" Unless your racing, adjust by ear and throttle response. Timing and idle go hand in hand. Our k5 was dieseling Because there was not enough timing, so the idle was set too high just so that it would idle where it should. But that opened up the transfer slots and made it run way too rich. Advance timing, lower idle, fixed! 👍

Old lady gave it to me because I wasn't about to cut her up; it was sidelined due to a leaky heater core. Over the years I've collected a ton of parts & pieces to make it much more fun & usable. 340. 8.75" SG, 3.55 rear. A-833 OD iron-case gearbox. 12" rotors. A38 oil cooler from an "80 Aspen cop car. 1 1/8" swaybar front, 3/4" rear swaybar....tons of stuff. It's cheap & fun. More people stop to look at it as a GT350 sits next to it-

I think it might be a series 62, that was the low line Caddy in that era. SMS auto fabrics should have the original fabric for the interior. The 390 was a good motor, but, the Dual Coupling Hydramatic trans is a nightmare. The 350 is a great upgrade for a driver. A warning though, this car is an X frame, meaning it had no side frame rails. I sold a friend a 62 and he was hit in the side, the car was totaled and he's lucky to be alive. I think if I had another, adding side rails like GM did on later model full size cars would be manditory. Best of luck with your driver, it is cool!

Family car when I was a kid was a '62 short-deck Town Sedan 4-window 4-door hardtop, the rarest of that year's Cadillacs. I probably took my driving test in that car. It would pull a loaded 2-horse trailer, 120K- plus miles were put on it on salted winter roads, so when dad sold it in '73, it was sadly worn out. That also had no power windows, A/C, etc.

Jon, that's a beauty and it's a hard top, which means on a hot summer day you're cruising with all the windows down. You won't need air conditioning, and trust me with an old car you're better off without electric windows. Enjoy it, man. Tony's right, that car is just plain cool.

I am glad we have gotten to the point 4 doors are getting a look now. We all can;t afford or even find a mid size two door to hot rod out. In an age where we are told to hide away at home by ourselves, here is a car meant for friends to pile in and go bum around. It is the perfect answer to all the stupidity going on.

You're a nice guy Uncle Tony,to spend a few minutes & help a young man without much experience or $,to have a car he can enjoy. I remember being about his age, and an older guy much like yourself (cool, chain smoking, confident) for some reason took an interest and taught me more about cars than i could ever repaid him.Much like you're doing there.

I have some nice rides that are driven in the summer only (April through October) But I have a 76 Ford T bird that is used as a daily driver for year round driving. Not perfect but a great runner and gets as many looks as the other rides that are used only in the summer! Got to have one that can "cut loose" and not worry about and drive anywhere.

A tip is necessary here, pull over and back the car or truck into the driveway, that way you won't have back out into traffic. You can drive out face first. A little bit difficult at first but well worth it.

I can see from the video footage that the paint can be brought right back around. But that 350. . If it were mine, I have a 454bb that's looking for an engine bay. I'd drop it right into that caddy. Set of headers, large pipes with some really elaborate chrome tips for the exhaust. Excellent car. Great find definately a win. A sure enough goin to town rig. Nice enough for a Sunday church driver.

I have been doing all my cars since 1971 . Even oil my 1976 supercharged corvette frame and bird cage owned the car 41 years here ,in Ontario the rust from damp and humidity . The bird cage I inject oil by removing t top sheet metal screws . The vet I prepped and painted in blue and diamond metal flake in my garage dyed the original white leather seats replaced the carpet refinished the steering column and shifter plate repainted the gauge indicators and all other interior trim . Because I take good care of the frame it never required frame off restoration in the 41 years I have owned it . Also I purchased and restored a 2006 black on black Pontiac 5.3 gxp with blown transmission for $1200 Canadian. I spent approx $3900.00 for the car and rebuilt transmission brakes touch up paint body supplies and safety check the car looks better than new after touch up and compounding and 2 coats of hi quality wax and the 0em alcor aluminum rims

Nice find. Fyi that cooling fan won't do a thing with out a shroud durn the summer months. You may want to find an electic one, because even if you found an oem one it won't line up with how the engine is mounted. Cool car, good luck with it.
