Why are prints important?
@efstathioszavvos4878
@efstathioszavvos4878 Жыл бұрын
@@odinata Because you put pixel peeping into context. Most midrange and above lenses are sharp enough for 99% of uses. Of course some lenses are better than others, but there is no point in pixel peeping a lens at 200% or 400% for sharpness and chromatic aberration if you're only going to print an 8x11, or if you're not going to print at all. The viewer in the end will see the overall impression the image leaves, they won't get a magnifying glass to see how good your lens is unless you are selling stock photos etc. Even in that case, most of today's lenses are good enough. Overall sharpness is also heavily reliant on technique e.g. focusing at the proper distance for your aperture, using a tripod etc., and not only the lens, so pixel peeping for the sake of it is kinda pointless. I saw a video a while ago where a guy shot a cityscape at f/2.8 comparing different Nikon lenses and determining sharpness based on that. That is bad technique, you get everything you want in focus and then compare to eliminate factors such as different number of aperture blades etc.

Loved this video. It's interesting to see you "struggle" sometimes to find interesting subject and/or composition rather than being in an amazing location with "easy" beautiful scenery everywhere. Also seeing Pebble jumping around everywhere was really wholesome!

I was already quite convinced, but what you are showing and how you are explaining it, in situation and with all details, makes the choice absolutely obvious. That said, your videos are going so beyond a simple choice of lens. All your stories are so peacefully inspirational and your photography channel is by far the one i'm enjoying the most ! Many thanks for the time you spend bringing us all with you Nigel !

As someone who bikes and hikes a lot and in the process of simplifying and lightening up my gear pack, I for one am glad you endorse this lens for that purpose and Image Quality. I fell This lens and either the 14-30mm F4 or a 20mm of some sort would be the ultimate landscape kit for any Z body. Thanks!!!

Beautiful morning! When I bought my D750, I got the 24-120 kit lens. Whenever I thought of going to the classic 24-70 I was held back by the fact that 40% of my shots were in the 71-120 range. When I switched to the Z7ii, I splurged on the 24-70 f2.8. It has been a great lens but I do miss that longer segment. The trade off is the 2.8 aperture and I end up cropping out some of the 46MP. Since the new 24-120 is an S lens, I may have to re-think that trade off for outdoor landscape work.

Great video as always, i had the original 24-120 as a kit lens on my d750. It lived on that camera, there isnt a better lens for being in the mountains! I bought the 24-120 z the day you could pre order as 1) it could only be better than the original and 2) its my most used lens! So sharp and extremely versatile!

My first and favourite z lens was my 24-70 f4s kit lens with my z7, after considering to upgrade to the 2,8 version this lens was announced, so happy i was patient and bought the 24-120 f4 s , it is an absolute gem and a worthy upgrade. The extra 50mm of focal length with beautiful image quality opens up so many possibilities!! Now all we need from Nikon is a 70-300 to compliment this lens for long hikes, landscapes and travel and we are set !!

I discovered your videos because my first ever camera was a Nikon and as a noob, I was really having a difficult time finding a good channel to learn about photography and my camera. There were lots of comparision videos about Nikon, but I realised that the materials about how to shoot, how to use, how to chose etc, were not enough. Nearly everyone (maybe 95%?) was using a Canon. Canon was sort of a hype, I guess. I use Nikon to this day, I sticked with it, and I have learned so many things from your channel. Thank you for your hard work.

Exactly the video I wanted from you, Nigel! I was just about settled on the 24-200 over the 24-70/4 to get as the everyday lens with my Z5 when news of the 24-120 came through and properly threw a spanner in the works, to the extent that I had to get the 24-50 kit lens as a stop-gap until I made my mind up. Which you've now done for me, so thanks for that! I already suspected this one would be the better choice but this has persuaded me that paying a little extra and sacrificing the 120-200 range is probably worth it, especially as I'll buy a Z 70-300 when they get round to updating that one. Can't wait for the Antarctica videos!

I am just getting into photography as a serious hobby and bought a bundle around a Sony a7 II. It included a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 and I am in love with it. I never really thought much about the weight of it all. But now that I want to carry a 1.5kg lens literally everywhere, this video resonates quiet a lot with me. Still, love the lens and I belive I would struggle to cut at 120mm, but handheld 2kg camera+lens is getting VERY heavy VERY quickly. Enjoy your travel to the cold south and the beauty of this planet!

You got yourself a new challenge, taking pictures before Pebbles ruins it 😆 But it's a pleasure to see her having such a great time outside with you! Very interesting lens you have here! Before getting a Nikon mirrorless (and recently getting the 70-200, complementary to the kit lens) , I was using a Tamron 35-150mm f2.8-4. It's a very interesting lens, just I felt it was missing a few mm in the bottom range. I still have it though, for days I want to travel lighter. Fingers crossed for your trip to Antarctica! Looking forward to seeing your pictures and videos from there! And before that, Glencoe, which I'm also very excited about! Enjoy Antarctica!

Canon R5 shooter here. Right now I have two essential lenses: the RF 24-105 F/4L and the RF 100-500 F/4.5-7.1L. I can shoot everything from mountains to woodland to wildlife to butterflies with them. Super useful kit. The past 5ish years or so I’ve been fascinated with a 2 lens kit, and the one you mentioned seems so useful/ perfect. I’ve been gravitating to a 28mm prime and a 70-200… with that light/nimble kit I feel like I can do anything. But those two lenses you mentioned, 24-105 and 100-500…. Pffft you’ve got everything for any situation when you’ve got 24-500 covered!. Ha! Those Canon lenses are superb also.

This is a great video Nigel. I love the old 24-85mm which was discontinued by Canon years ago due to having no image stabilisation but its perfect for long exposure. I always carry my 70-200 2.8 but that weight is something to consider when hiking for 6 hours. Its a beauty to have in the bag but not when your climbing up mountains. I also have the 35mm and 50mm prime but feel them to be restrictive in the field and only tend to use them for smaller details or when Im capturing something with a DOF. Will have to check out that lens as It would break a lot of the barriers carrying too much kit. Hope you're back is feeling better soon. Loved the images throughout Nigel. Great work! So happy this lens came available. My last camera was a D5600 and after trying multiple low end lenses, I bought a 'like new' Nikon DX pro 16-80mm (equivalent to FX 24-120mm) and it rarely ever came off my camera. It provided just about everything needed here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. My only Z lens is the Z 24-200mm and while it is better than the D5600 with the pro 16-80mm (not by much), I can certainly tell a drop in details the further away in the image. A lot of trees in the far background get mushy and I'm so happy to be able to scrounge up enough for this new Z 24-120mm. As always, thank you for the video. I hope they are considering a 70-300mm (or something similar) to go with the 14-30mm and 24-120mm... Something not $2700 like the 100-400 🤷‍♂️

I kept my 24 120 G and it works great with FTZ. 70 200 2.8 works well, but I can substitute 135 and 200 primes. But I am really happy with 26 3.8, 40 2.0, 85 4.0. The more you carry, the fewer pic you make. The last three are surprisingly good lenses. Hand held panos are easy if you turn on Grid Lines and level in viewfinder.

I was going to buy this when I saw it on the roadmap at 24-105, but then they pleasantly surprised everyone with the final production model coming in at 24-120 f4. With the 14-30 and this one, I have 14-120 at f4 with two S lenses. Wonderful. Add the 100-400 S at the same size as the 70-200 and you can see the many great options Nikon is giving us. Keep on with the good work and enjoyed seeing Pebbles as always. Thanks.

Thanks for another great video - very informative & enjoyable. I've just replaced my 24-80 for a 24-120 (equivalent) on my Pentax K3II. I find it to be a very useful range.

I’m just now beginning to shoot with a Nikon mirrorless camera. My first z lens will be the 24-120 f/4 for landscapes. The only f lens I kept is the 500mm PF which will continue to be my favorite Wildlife lens. Pebbles would be a great friend for our Pi!

Love the video. I recently own the 24-120z for my Z6ii. It would be great if you show us the post processing (workflow) before printing.

Nigel, I have followed you now for the past 2 years or so...so in a sense I hold you responsible for me going out and buying this lens. No, truth be told and you highlighted that fact the Nikkor 24-70mm S lens just left me coming up short of taking that elusive shot which required a bit of extra reach in certain situations. This lens perfectly compliments my Nikkor 14-30mm f4 S lens which between these 2 lens are sufficient for most situations. Love this lens. Thanks very much for your input and insights much appreciated. Take care. Mike

This is great to hear on the 24-120mm. I had the 24-120mm f4 G lens when I had a D810. It was a very useful focal range, but my lens had disappointing image quality. Now, I just have to wait for retailers to get the 24-120mm and the 100-400mm in stock.

I’m not an expert but I enjoy taking photos. A mft 12-60 f/2.8 - 4 Pana Leica is on my camera most of the time; it’s stabilised, weather-sealed, lightweight and good for my back. It is also sufficiently flexible not to interrupt long walks on Dartmoor with my partner while being purposeful. I loved the pictures of leaves.

Olympus has the 12-100mm F4 Pro. It has an ever wider range and IQ is amazing.

great video as always. lovely to see you using prints to evaluate the lens rather than the approach sued my many reviewers. Just a note and maybe not for everyone, but if you shoot with a Z7/Z7ii/Z9 you can crop to a 200mm equivalent focal length and still have 16mp, which is enough for an A3 print. Not something g to use everyday, but if you need that 'longer' focal length just one in a while you can do it with this lens. enjoy shooting!

I have the Olympus system..........its so good and lightweight....I have the 12-100 f4 Pro lens (24-200mm f4 FF Equiv) such a good lens for my landscape photography coupled with the 7 - 14mm f2.8 Pro lens covers it all

Before I upgraded to the Z system, I had a 24-120 f4 Sigma Art for my D750 kit (ended up selling it to afford the Z system and Z lenses etc etc). It was such a useful range that I almost felt like I was being lazy… I was like, this should be more difficult. LOL I 100% agree with what you’re saying at 7:30 - I shot an indoor event almost completely with the 24-120… was light, nimble, focused solely on photography and not changing lenses. To this day the client references that year as the “personality plus” photos I took of all the guests. I truly believe that’s because I had the 24-120 most of the time.
Wait for the last one! 👀
