Hello From Hawaii

Күн бұрын

So let’s talk slippers in Hawaii. While the rest of the world calls them flip flops, in Hawaii, we call them slippers. My slippers are getting worn down and rather than just buy the same thing, I thought I’d shop around and bring you along as I test out different brands to find what I think would be perfect slipper in Hawaii. This video is part discovery and part review of the best men's slipper/flip flop/sandal for me.
And when I talk about the perfect slipper for Hawaii, I'm talking about something you can wear everyday that is versatile. I need to be able to walk in it on the sidewalk, but also walk in the sand and in some wet situations.
This video is not sponsored.
And yes, I spent over $200 to try to figure out the perfect Hawaii slipper. Hope you enjoy the video. Below are links to the slippers I tried. The links are not affiliate links since I bought all of the slippers myself.

Reminds me of growing up in Hawaii. We were barefoot all the time and wore before Local slippers, they were plain black that's what we used until Kamaboko slippers then surfer slippers. My adult life I only kept a pair at my parents home. good laugh's, many thanks' of memories.

You mentioned not wanting to leave slippahs on the beach. Brah, I would never leave anything, unattended, on any beach in Hawai'i, because ... of possible theft. I hate to say this but, it is a valid concern over there! Also, wearing the right shoes and clothing (jewelry, too!) always makes all of us feel better about ourselves! 🤙 There is nothing at all wrong with feeling like A King Of The Hill when you are wearing ... The Right Stuff! 👍

I’ve been wearing Olukais for several years. When I developed plantar fasciitis, they were the only footwear that gave me the support and comfort I needed to heal. Now that it’s gone, I still wear them because they feel so good. I’m in Oregon but I only wear shoes or boots if the weather demands it.

Another convert here, @Olukai. 2 months and I don't wear any other flip flop. Wore Reef's for 13 years, several models, Lord knows how many dollars and unsatisfied. Only took two models for me. The Olukai Kipi and the Ohana. VERY pleased! Several pairs now. Nigel from Duncan, British Columbia, Canada

Locals: good temporary slipper, perfect for kids who always lose or forget their slippers and for adults who want something cheap to leave on the beach when surfing or when visiting friends and family Reef: comfy, especially the straps, but stays wet too long and, like you said, starts to smell Scott: heavy and less flexible but durable…straps need more cushion but it does dry faster Crocs: comfortable, dries easily, straps are weirdly spacious, not very good grip on wet ground Hoka: never tried it but it looks comfortable with all that extra cushion Olukai: love my olukai! Good grip on wet ground, doesn’t smell, takes a while to dry, expensive Since I wear slippers almost daily, I don’t mind spending the money on good quality. Happy feet are happy knees and a happy back…but I always have a spare slippahs or locals when I know I’ll have to leave them somewhere. Who knew that I’d watch and enjoy an 18 min video about slippers? 🤙🏽

I used to wear Reefs and they're still very good. Even though my entire family wore Olukai I stuck to Reef or Cobian, and every time I tried Olukai the arches were way too high for me. I finally gave them a try and suffered for it. It took about a day and a half to break in or get used to and but they became my favorites. The quality is excellent and they somehow look almost new after about 4 years. I have Olukai Olu'meas also which are all leather and flatter arches. Be aware of the ones like yours where the straps come from the sides instead of the tops, because they're way more forgiving to flatter and wider feet. Excellent customer service too.

I just got my Olukai Ohanas. Right out the box i thought the feel of these is above any other I've ever wore. My last pair of flip flops, I mean slippahs, were great. They lasted a very long time but i haven't found anything built like those to replace them. Now I have. I wear boots all the time for work and play, but when I'm just relaxing i like a comfortable pair of slippahs around the house or at camp....... maybe even a quick trip to the store. Nobody wants to see my feet. Thank you for the review. It really opened my eyes to the different styles and builds that are out there. I think I'm going to purchase another pair of Olukai leather slippahs. And thanks for getting "slippahs" in my vocabulary.

Thanks for the comparison video. Since I've moved to the mainland, I don't wear slippers anymore---it's more because of self-preservation than anything else---without any kind of treads to the sole, I found myself slipping on wet surfaces. The main reason I gave them up was because I climbed a ladder with slippers and broke my foot because there was no support under my foot. My alternative play-wear is Skechers Outdoor Lifestyle Sandals---close to a slipper but with support and treads to keep from slipping. Keep up the good work!

I just found your channel, great review. I had never been a fan of crocs until about 5 years ago when I learned they made flip flops (slippers). I fell in love with the Crocband flip, the thinner strap may be better on your feet. They are thin enough to squeeze in my carry on luggage and work great for shower shoes, house shoes, pool and beach. Five years of travel use and they don't show much wear. Then my second favorite of crocs is the Baya Flip so comfortable and great for people who need arch support. Love them for around the house, store or neighborhood. Both run about $30 and less if you catch a sale. Since I liked the others so much, like you I decided to try the Classic Crocs Flip and they are not my favorite. I'm female so wearing the unisex, which is a man's medium is like a wide for a woman so I have lots of room. What I don't like about this pair is The little nubs are more prominent in the bottom of the foot than the previous two I named. It took about a year of daily wear to get them to smooth down enough that I didn't notice it anymore.

Olukais are the way to go. Wore reefs for 20 years and bought a pair of Olukais 2 years ago. Nvr buy anything else again. The leather is durable, arch support is great and with the bottom pads you don’t get that suction affect when waking on wet surfaces. That feeling you get is from being different, not bc you spent the money but bc others think it’s silly to spend $100+.

Interesting review. Thanks for the info. I still have a pair of ?? I bought at HIC before I left Hawaii 30 years ago. They don't get much wear here in WA. Too wet, too cold, too whatever. I first changed to Birkenstocks which really worked well with wool socks, even in the snow. Then I got old and started throwing them off as I walked. LOL But....I am ready to buy a new pair of slippahs which I do wear occasionally. I wear Hoka One's for running and walking but I doubt I'd enjoy the "recovery" slippers. As for the OluKais, it's just like wearing dress shoes instead of sneakers. You feel more dressed up and special. So don't apologize for how you feel. I hope that feeling never goes away. Aloha.

Hey dude, loved the video. Being a Floridian I'm also in my flip flops daily, and I got a really good laugh at your comments on Olukai. I'm partial with them, and have an embarrassingly amount of their brands over the years, and literally just last week I had the same thought you expressed. With the worry about wearing them for whatever reason, theft, or with me I'm afraid to ruin them. In my case I got their $175 pair and they have sat in my closet for 2 years with very minimal wear and I finally busted them out last week and said screw it lol. If I'm paying that much for them the least I can do is enjoy them. The pair you got are great for being around water as well as being leather, I'd recommend their Nui as well, if you like the pair in this video. My favorite of theirs is their Halo, it's their HLA brand that I found to be extremely durable and made for the daily life of Hawaiian lifeguards. Anyway. Love the video. I believe I have about every brand Olukai makes sadly, so hit me up if you need any reviews or comments on any of them. #OlukaiRocks

Aloha Chris! I highly recommend the Vionic Tide, Olukai Mea Ola, Mekila and Halo slippers and my wife has multiple pairs of Fit Flop slippers in casual and dressy styles. We also have Hoka slippers for indoor use and they are really comfortable but you're right about the foot retention straps being a bit too long and made for someone with a "thicker" foot. I'm not a small guy but they could shorten the straps by a good inch or so to make it even more comfortable. It almost looks like it was designed for someone wearing three pairs of wool socks! This isn't slipper related, but for super comfy all day on your feet walking shoes the Hoka Bondi SR (slip resistant) or Bondi 7 shoes are great AND they have a thick sole which makes you taller!! I have 6 pairs of Hokas but these are my go to when I'm walking around Kakaako.

This is me with Luna sandals, but specifically the ones with repurposed tire tread for outsoles. I just wish they weren't so f*cking expensive, even if mine have lasted most of a decade with little noticeable wear. I was looking forward to picking up a pair of Scott’s during my trip to Hawaii but it doesn’t look like they sell them at Walmart anymore. I need the rubber cross textured top surface to grip the bottom of my foot because I walk in water a lot. I had a pair of Tevas like that but they don’t make them anymore. Another leather slipper I’d recommend are the Rainbows made in Southern California. I really like them a lot when I’m doing non-water activities.

Great video! I’ve have a pair of the olukai leather sandals myself. I will be honest I am not sure about getting them wet (I just wear casually right now) because they are leather. I’m not sure if they will discolor or loose longevity from actually getting them wet. What has your experience been with them?

My Dad's from the Philippines and he calls em Slippers too! I have a lot of family living in South Florida. I was visiting them every other month sometimes for a week of two, sometimes for just a day or two. My Mom bought me a pair of Navy Blue Oakley Super Coil 2.0 several years ago for my Birthday (before Covid-19). They're still in Great Shape, except for the bottom tread is a little bit worn out, because I wear them a lot in the house and in the warm weather all the time. It's hard for me to walk in em when they get wet because they get a little slippery on the bottom of my feet and my feet slide around and I have to walk slowly. It also changes they way I walk when they get wet too. Still, I'd rather where these, than the old cheap rubbery pair that I used to wear, before I got my Oakley Super Coil 2.0. I actually bought myself a new pair in a different color for my Birthday last week. Normally I visit my family in Florida for my Birthday. One reason is I like to go Deep Sea Fishing on My Birthday. I couldn't get off of work this year. One more thing. I had a repeating dream that I was the Big Kahuna. It's very detailed and graphic. It's a Really Amazing Dream! Aloha!

I use to buy the $20 dollar sandals all the time, then i bought some $40 dollar sandals that felt good. I was told to try OluKais by a good friend of mine and i couldn't justify the cost. So i said what the heck ill try them. I paid $85 for them and don't regret them one bit. I even bought a pair that was all leather for $100 and are also great. Olukais nailed everything you can want and need on sandals and are amazing. Highly recommend them

I switched to OluKai slippers a while back, and man, are my feet happy that I did. I need a lot of support, plus I have wide feet, and no other slippers I've tried do me right like my OluKais. I'm in a pair all day, every day (I work from home), and the foot pain I used to get after walking around in other slippers is totally gone. They're pricey, no doubt, but worth the money for me.

Thanks for making this, I have never thought of a different slippah because I have been wearing Scott's for 30 years. Never heard of Reef's before, so I might have to look into it next time I shop. For me, it's about what can you afford. When I was a kid, we could only afford the basic Zori. You know the blue one that is way thinner than the Local's and the front part would come off after a month and you would put a stick through it to make it last another month. I would think because the OluKai is leather, it wouldn't do good after going through water. Not to mention that thing cost twice as much as the shoes I buy. You forgot to test the aerodynamics of the slippahs, you were supposed to put it on your hands and then run.
@HelloFromHawaii

The Reefs have always been great. I was surprised by the OluKai pair. The leather is waterproof so it was good after getting wet. I was going to test the aerodynamics, but more in a throwing test. Decided it was best not to throw slippers randomly at the park. 😆

Aloha from So. CA 🤙 I used to love to where sandals “slippers” & I had a few pair but my feet would hurt after a while, I went to a podiatrist & learned that I have high arches so I need arch support footwear. The sandals that I wear now are so comfortable that I wore out the label so I will let you know what they are called as soon as I find out. Find the best shoes, sandals or “slippers” for your feet. Taking care of your feet is so important. Have a beautiful night.

LOL! Looks like you made good choices. I have to say, I wore my Chacos almost constantly when I lived in Hawaii. More of a sandal than a slipper, though, but it gets wet and dries out, no problem. I do want to ask, how does the leather on the OluKai ones hold up to getting wet? Windward, my sandals got wet every single day. Plus, nice to know your name. Not sure I did, before this.

Plus years ago back my heels would hurt so i went to c a foot doc & he said the worst thing to wear on ur feet r those flat rubber slippers which we all grew up using. Doc said our feet r not shaped flat which rubber slippers r. Thats when i changed to better quality slippers & has made a big difference.

The slippahs for me are the good quality brands that are on deep discount at DSW. I don’t buy slippahs over $30-40 because they all fall apart too quickly for the amount of material that you pay for…thus bargain hunting at DSW works for me - in SoCal, when summer never really ends, finding the “end of summer” deals for slippahs is a sensible route. My favorite find in the past few yrs were quality Tevas that were the regular “slippahs” style without all the loops and wraps…sturdy and comfortable

These are all radical sandals. However, my favorite are still the classic Carver Suede Leather Sandals by Quicksilver. I have just recently purchased the black pair since I owned my light tan brown pair for 8 years now. They are so comfy. When you slip your feet into them it feels so soft like your feet are being cushioned and still have support being they are not completely flat. They have for me stood the test of time. Wear them everywhere and even in the Wintertime. Got plenty sandy, even a wave tried to take them once and got soaked. No smell and by the look can't even tell they have gotten wet at all. Many other flip flops to would fail me, because the tip of the soles would start to separate and one time I almost tripped down a flight of stairs. So I love my Quicksilvers. They are going for only $28.00 which is what I paid for them 8 years ago. You should try them out. You may just love them too.

Its a great video. Practical and hilarious. I love the 'feel good slippers', the Cadillac slipper when you want to feel good and impressive the neighbors at a Pot Luck at their house, unless you're worried...who the bugga that stole my slippers, especially going Open House looking and finding your slippers gone. At that point, take the Locals. I'm surprised that you didn't have the running challenge to them. In the old prehistoric days of barefoot running in the neighborhood, it wasn't uncommon to play basketball in rubber slippers on a hot summer day. How do these ones handle the court dry, wet playing. I remember many a day, there was a pickup game and nobody had shoes and playing on hot court was pretty challenging. One thing I would mention that as we age, we do have greater foot problems, like needing more arch support, which these days, if I know I'm doing extensive walking, locals basic doesn't have the arch support, that's why the more expensive ones if they fit your foot, but check with your doctor on that. Last thought, enjoy your slippers while you can, cheap/middle/high end, over time, you never know when the slipper breaks on you at the worst time at the hottest time of the day and the farthest from any place selling slippers. It might be your slippers giving you payback for not appreciating them and committing slippa suicide to remind us how dependent we are on them.

Bro your review is so so accurate, I had reef for ages and they do have a smell issue and they slide when wet. Now about the Hoka, i had the old recovery model and it was tight on the foot, extremely comfortable and i loved wearing them so so much until they broke. Today i got a new pair of this new model and i was very disappointed, i felt exactly what you described, they made a bad model, i don't get it how such a good company can "upgrade" such a perfect model and ruin it so much. It doesn't lock your foot, It's too loose. I'm going to a shoe maker maybe he can sort it out somehow... Such a shame. You can still find the old Hoka ora recovery flip flop on ebay, but it's very hard to find. I would even pay more to have these pair again. Great and honest review!
