“If you won’t scold and dominate us, we will never give you cause to hate us.” :’) ❤️ I don’t know why, but that is my favorite line of the song. Jane and Michael weren’t bad children; they were actually quite kind and obedient. They were merely lonely and wanted to have some fun.

Oatmeal. Wanted to feel loved. Affection. For the adults, mom and dad, to treat them as interesting as money or protesting or whatever new cause was in vogue.
@alking76552 жыл бұрын
That's essentially what the entire film is about, but that's the magic in multiple perspectives. Children see the literal interpretation, while the older you get, the more you realise, it's metaphorical for not necessarily what is wanted just in a nanny, but what they want from their own parents.

Not sure why but this particular song has always tugged at my heart strings. I always get a little misty at the, if you won't scold and dominate us, we will never give you cause to hate us part. I know it's not sad but so adorable, it's heartbreaking. The casting for this movie was perfection, written in the stars. I can't imagine anyone else in any of the roles. Just perfect. The soundtrack is mind blowing, chock-full of the most iconic songs of our time but this little song is a sweet gem that moves me every time.

Sweetest song. Jane Banks (Karen Dotrice) was the cutest kid ever.
@chrisnorton43827 жыл бұрын
Karen was a child actress not a singer obviously. She had had some singing tuition but had been taught to sing in a pseudo-adult manner. When she rehearsed this song the studio musicians (rather cruelly) burst into laughter and Karen burst into tears (she was only 8 remember). Julie Andrews kindly gave up a rest day to help Karen find a more natural way of singing. So some of the phrasing in this song has the Julie "touch".

As great as the books are, one thing that always bothered me was that Jane and Michael are always acting like brats, and are always the ones who have to learn the lesson. I like the fact that the film gives the kids a bit of dignity, and suggests that they actually DO have something to say.

@@aprildannette9820, she wasn't known for actually liking children, and only gave in to giving Walt the film rights because she needed the money. It's explained in "Saving Mr Banks". That said, you could debate how accurately they interpret the recounts of Pamela (Helen)'s father, Travers Goff.

Until I saw Saving Mr. Banks, I always thought Jane was singing "Never give us castor oil or GLUE." For 30+ years, I had that lyric wrong. Only when I watched SMB did I realize that it's actually "gruel," not "glue." I guess when I was a kid, I didn't know the word "gruel," so my brain inserted the closest-sounding word to "gruel," which was "glue"! And as a kid, it made perfect sense to me why Michael would make such a face at the prospect of being made to ingest glue!

My heart just breaks for the kids. They're likely emotionally neglected by their parents at this point in the movie if they're asking that their nanny be able to play with them, sing them songs, and take them on outings. A kid wouldn't be asking somebody else for these things if their parents were already giving it to them. Their requirements are so reasonable.
