Shelties NEED to run. They are herding dogs. They were born to run. They need a big yard to run in, and / or long walks every day or twice a day. They are great companions, but only if they get their much-needed exercise.

Two others have already said it but I'll say it again. I have had two shelties spanning over 20 years now. Shelties are NOT the perfect breed for less active owners by any stretch of the imagination. The are extremely active dogs and will get restless and possibly destructive if they are not engaged. They do not require unending activity either. If you walk them a couple of times a day and play with them in between they are fine. For an active elderly person who really likes dogs and enjoys being engaged with them, a sheltie is a fine pet. However, if you think that you are going to bring a sheltie home and then just sit back on the couch with him you are badly mistaken. Beyond needing activity, shelties need engagement. They want to be part of everything. Simple things like "help me get a beer" pricks up my sheltie's ears. he knows that he has to escort me to the outside fridge and make sure that I make it back safely 😀. I let him help me take the garbage cans out., He herds them from the back to the front. it's not about running marathons with your sheltie but it is about getting them involved in as many aspects of your life as possible. They need to feel like they have a purpose.

In your opinion, we are in need of a ‘shop dog’ for our busy barbershop. Would a sheltie be able to ‘hang out’ at the shop for long periods with walks and also I’m planning on making an agility course in the back for him. Do you think a Sheltie will be happy with that? Can they stay calm or no? Only think I worry about is the hair on the floor of the shop but the sheltie is smart and can be trained to not step near the chairs…

@@gutsandgrittv5076 I have no experience with that but my first thought is that he would probably be fine. The key would be socializing him with people early and often since he will be around them quite a bit. I would bring him to the shop as soon as possible to let him get used to the environment. Also, try to find tasks for him to "help with" in the shop. Here are my mistakes with my Shelties: Liam was a shy dog and I did not socialize him enough when he was a puppy. He was OK with people, but not as friendly as one would wish. Flynn is an extremely outgoing dog but he barks at the drop of a hat. I did not do enough to control that behavior early on. Flynn is now 10 and we're still working that issue 😀 Your sheltie will presumably not have every challenging aspect that a sheltie can have, but my approach, knowing what I know now, would be to assume that he did and try to work on those things ASAP. To me, that means socialization and reducing the tendency towards ALARM!!! Hey, if you're a 20 pound sheep dog, yapping, ankle biting and ALERT!!! is pretty much what you've got to work with.

@@gutsandgrittv5076 Ours doesn’t like strangers in our house and barks at them, even though we got him used to people when he was a puppy.

This a horrible video suggesting the Sheltie is good for less active people. They need a lot of exercise!

Is this an AI production, because I've got a bad feeling about this advice. Shelties are NOT couch potatoes and need to get out regularly. Wonderful little dogs, though. Really don't see how they'd be a good fit for limited mobility owners.

That is not true. I own a Sheltie and they are energetic bombs! And they have a tendency to bark a lot. If you don't wear them out and it takes a lot to wear them out, they will turn your hause or backyard around. They may be small, but demanding. Non active elderly people wouldn't be able to keep up with a Sheltie. And the dog would be very unhappy.
